The Ladies' Detective series are so captivating, based on the lives of simple, wise people whom you can't help but love. It always brings a smile to see what their next involvements will bring. Smith has a way of including 'lessons to live by' in his portrayal of the ladies of the agency and their spouses and friends. A few words of wisdom along with a fun story and lots of laughs make these books well worth the read.

Alexander McCall Smith's delightful series about a lady detective in Botswana, Precious Ramotswe, is never disappointing with its delightfully wacky characters and the warmth and kindness that is part of the old Botswana heart of Africa.

Another book in this series and another hit with me and my friends. It's always enjoyable to enter the world of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, where good almost always triumphs over evil and the African landscape makes a fascinating backdrop

The latest in the series, this story enchants as do all the others. There's a sighting of the beloved white van (a ghost?), and a cattle-related case with a strange but satisfactory ending. Apprentice Charlie confronts a life-changing situation and begins to mature and, of course, Grace and Phuti tie the knot. The big heart, keen intuition and comforting good sense of Precious Ramotswe is woven through all.

This is yet another in the whimsical (and delightful) story of the Botswana detectives and the folks they're in contact with. Best read only after developing a familiarity with the entire story line.

The Saturday Big Tent Wedding Party definitely met my expectations as a delightful addition to the Number 1 Detective Agency series. Precious isn't always logical but she has insight into the heart of each problem she attempts to solve.

I have long been a member of Alexander McCall Smith's fan club. In this book, he ,once again, entertains and educates us at the same time. I will watch for his next book so I (once again) will benefit from his rich and caring knowledge . Thankyou, Mr. Smith

I found the #1 Ladies Detective stories originally in a series on HBO. I then found the books and have been hooked ever since! This is the latest in the series -- and it does not disappoint!!! Most enjoyable reading!

Fantastic series. The author must love and understand the place where he comes from. It is a changing world and bringing in some of tradition with the ongoing outside influences makes for a very inspiring story.

In full disclosure, I have not read this yet. You could argue I have no right to write a review.
HOWEVER, please hear me out.
I bought this book for my mom for Mother's Day. Just like I bought the "Double Comfort Safari Club" for her last year. The timing of the release of these books right before Mother's Day is perfect. Alex, did your publisher plan it that way? Of course they did, you sly, sly dog.
My mom introduced me (her now 35-year-old son) to Alexander McCall Smith through listening to audiobook versions of the "44 Scotland Street" series. While I loved those, and pretty much anything Bertie does leaves me in stitches, I enjoy the adventures of Precious et al even more.
My mom had the first 6 or so of the books and loaned them to me. I was hooked. I would say that they are uplifting and restore my love for humanity but that just sounds so damn lame. I mean, somebody once gave me a "chicken soup for the soul" page-a-day calendar and I threw it out before mid-January because it made me want to barf. But this is uplifting and, you know, actually GOOD.
So now, my mom and I have this great scheme. I get her the book when it comes out, she has a Mother's Day gift she loves, and so I'm a hero. Then she loans it to me when she's done, so I get to read it too. Double win.
I suppose it's possible I might regret giving this book 5 stars if I find out when my mom gives it back to me that the 12th one is suddenly horrible when the first 11 were fantastic, but I mean, c'mon, what are the chances?

I love this series and am waiting for McCall Smith's next one. I pass all of them on to my sister and she loves them too. I also rented the DVD from Netflix and watch the BBC shows that have been made from the books. Excellent entertainment.

He's always a good read with well enjoyed chuckles and the feeling you're once more meeting 'old friends'. I like these people and I love this author. He must be a delightful friend to have conversation with in front of the fireplace !

Always look forward to the latest adventures of Mma Ramotswe and her assistant Mma Makutsi. It's like visiting with an old friend who is always kind and patient and shares their common and good sense.

This was another of McCall Smith's Botswana books. We have had group discussions of his books and enjoy this series immensly. His series on London and Scotland people are not as interesting here in America.
