Naturally, like any book that's become a film, while reading the book you will see what was left out in the film itself. This is no different but I knew when I saw the film, having read about and experienced many types of spiritual phenomena, that it had to be based upon such information. What's great about reading the book is the detail. I sat with it, like I do all my other books, with a pencil, underlining things I knew to be true to me. Richard Matheson did an incredible job of creating something that we could all identify with at some point through death, in that we will either be left or we will do the leaving. Good storytelling may be fiction but it's better when based in truth. If you have no experience with anything spiritual or you are a diehard skeptic you won't be drawn to this in the first place. He does mention at the beginning of the book that all of the phenomena that takes place was not taken from his imagination. He did his research. I know-he lists several books I read before I bought this. He created a very possible scenario based on this information. All one has to do to understand this is to read just one book, by anyone, about real stories, real people that have heard, seen or even felt their dead family members. If you loved the film the book will reach you even more deeply.

This story makes you feel everything peaceful and soul-wrenching, searching and answers given to questions you didn't even know you had, loss and love but above all serenity and for those who believe faith

I LOVE this story!! Richard Matheson did his homework before writing What Dreams May Come and the story he gives us is one of heartache, loss, love and beauty. The movie didn't do justice to this beautiful story of Chris and his enduring love and need for Ann. I will not tell anymore than that of the story, but do yourself a favor and get this book.

This book rocks. Matheson claims in the introduction that he did hours and hours of research on life after death, and that this story is a very close representation of what actually happens. My question...how do you research such a thing with objectivity? I dunno, but it makes a wonderful story.

A beautifully written love story that depicts how love can conquer all, even death. Matheson paints a wonderful picture of what happens after life as the main character defies all odds to reunite with his wife.
