Second-chance at love stories generally are not my favorite. But Jennifer Ashley did a fantastic job setting up this story in The Madness of Lord Ian MacKenzie. And I feel like it delivered on its promise. It's emotional and sexy --and I really enjoyed the rich characters Ashley has created in this series.

Isabella and Mac have never stopped loving each other, even though their marriage effectively ended three years ago. The why's of it take a while to become clear, but at a basic level, we know it's because Mac was a bad husband and Isabella walked away when she couldn't take it anymore. Their years apart have been misery for them both, but they maintained their separation: Mac, out of deference to Isabella; and she out of the pain Mac caused her just before their split. Yet, Isabella is still a member of the MacKenzie family. She and brother-in-law Ian are dear to one another --and she has grown very close to Ian's wife Beth.

As the story begins, Isabella has decided to reenter Mac's life with the news someone is forging his artwork. Her presence and concern are all the motivation Mac needs to try to reconcile. In some ways, it's almost too easy; in others, it seems impossible. Like I said, Isabella still loves him. Her body still craves him and her heart remembers the good times. But her anger and grief are so deeply ingrained, that even Mac's sobriety and pledges of devotion may be unable to break down the walls she has built around her fragile heart.

I feel like the love story was well crafted. I could feel the hurt that radiated from both Isabella and Mac. Their heartbreak and longing for one another is tangible. When Mac grieves, when he cries, it's like a knife to my heart. But then, I see through Isabella's eyes what a horrible husband he made the first time around. Not in all ways, of course. The love was there, even then. But he failed her in some very real ways that are tough to forgive. The details unfold slowly, so it's almost like two stories happening at once. You see both the fall of their marriage --and it's rebuilding at the same time.

The love scenes are great. Clearly, passion is one thing that was never lacking in this relationship. They both know what they want and how to bring out the fire in one another. I loved the image of a sexy Mac, painting in nothing but his kilt --and his love and desire for his wife made him even more appealing. Again, I had to keep reminding myself why he deserved to be left in the first place.

It wasn't a perfect book. There's a kind of lackluster mystery going on --and it ended up being kind of crazy and over the top. Yes, it was the primary vehicle that drove the couple externally, but... meh. And there are a couple of clichés in there, a nearly saccharine epilogue, and set-ups for the next two books that are a little too obvious. But overall, I really did enjoy the book. I will definitely keep reading the series. Now I am off to learn The Many Sins of Lord Cameron!

Well the couple meet. Know each other an hour and a half before they run off and get married and then have a problem with their marriage. Who would have seen that coming?

She's beautiful perfect and goes into heat every time she is in the same room with him. He's handsome, muscular and wants to jump her bones every time he is in the room with her. So you see they have a lot in common. She is concerned that somebody is forging paintings with his name on it. He says he doesn't care. Apparently Jennifer Ashley has not spent much time with artists. However this gives them a common goal and they get to spend time with each other and figure things out.

It really isn't a bad story. The problem with a series is that you compare them to each other. Which is why I never read them one after another. Still I have to say it falls short of Lord Ian. The couple was quirky and artistic in Lord Ian. In this they seem to be juvenile and obtuse. But who knows if it had been a stand alone it might have gained an extra star..

Lady Isabella Scranton and Lord Mac Mackenzie made every gossip paper in London when they eloped six years ago after falling in love at first sight. Although extremely wealthy, Mac who comes from a very boisterous family, is not the match Isabella's family wants for her. Disowning her, Isabella was heartbroken, but so in love with Mac they spent the next few years in wedded bliss. But slowly, Mac's drinking and leaving in the middle of the night started to wear on Isabella. He would come home from long absences and they would start a passionate affair, but would soon burn out. Finally, after three years, Isabella couldn't stand it and separated from Mac.

Now three and a half years later, Mac hasn't painted a decent portrait since Isabella left him. He has been desolate and extremely depressed over his separation. He has stopped drinking and tried to make himself a better man. When Isabella knocks on his door to warn him of someone forging his work, he decides the time is right for a proper seduction of his wife. Isabella takes a look at Mac, in nothing but his kilt, covered in paint, and can't help but feel a longing for his touch again. When Mac gets wind of someone impersonating him, and matters turn violent, he will do everything to protect Isabella.

I started Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage with trepidation. First of all this book has been greatly anticipated. The first in the series, The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie is on the list of my all time favorite books. It not only introduced us to Lord Ian, but his rowdy, loving, and very mysterious brothers. I was very curious to see how Mac would stand up to Ian. But I also worried because I have read other paranormal romance and erotic books by Jennifer Ashley written under various pen names and always walked away very disappointed. It is almost like a different person writes this series. I absolutely adore her style and her characters. I still think Ian holds top spot in my heart but Mac, with his passion and charm very much endeared me to him.

What I like best about this book is that both Mac and Isabella are grieving over their ruined marriage. The first fifty pages holds such intensity, tension and heartbreak I about ripped out my hair. These are two people who truly love each other, and want another chance with each other but Isabella questions whether Mac's good graces will last. Will his sobriety stand the test of time? One of my favorite scenes from the book is right at the beginning, when due to outside circumstances Isabella is forced back into Mac's life. They both accept they love each other but there is such a far way to go.

I was afraid after the first 50-100 pages the tension and Isabella's indecisiveness would get on my nerves but that never happened. It was very clear she wanted Mac, but she needed time to see if he was going to revert back to his unruly self. She makes him court her and there is a scene where he shows up at her door (although he was staying at her house) to take her for a drive and he acts extremely proper that had me laughing out loud. Although Mac is the one that needs to redeem himself for his past actions, he is such a good hearted, warm person, you just know Isabella is not going to be able to resist.

I really think this series is a must read for all historical romance fans. Next up is The Many Sins of Lord Cameron and I can't wait!

First Thought when Finished: Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage made me smile, laugh, cry, grrr, and in the end grin like a Cheshire cat!

Overall Thoughts: I loved, loved, loved, loved Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage. I was afraid that I wouldn't like Mac but that man was so swoon-worthy and damaged that one couldn't help but fall hard! Isabella was so strong and I appreciated her want to protect herself despite loving Mac. She made him fight for her and dang it that made me love them more. This was an emotional story (so far both books in this series have been) but the payout was worth it!

Audio Thoughts:

Narrated by Angela Dawe /Length 9 hrs and 9 mins

So y'all know I call her Angela "freaking" Dawe already so there isn't much more that I can say! She freaking rocks the narration and is one of my all around favorite narrators!

I give "Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage" 4 1/2 stars.
This is the second time I've read this story and one I'll come back to again and again.

There is just so many things I liked about this book.
"Mac" and Issabella play out the story of an estranged couple who's "highs and lows"
caused them to go their separate ways even though they loved each other. Sad circumstances
caused their separation 3 1/2 years earlier. Time has healed some of those past wounds,
age, wisdom and self introspection during their separation has allowed both Mac and Issabella to
mature. Both now realize what is really important in life but neither knows how to bridge the
gap back to the other or if it will ever be possible.

An interesting assortment of characters including family members, personal staff and a
madman on the loose adds to the interesting storyline that helps to push these two back where they
belong - in each others arms.

"Lady Isabell's Scandalous Marriage" ends as a feel good romance that shows even when a marriage
hits troubled times and partners go their separate ways that it is still possible to have a happy ever after.
It just takes time, patience, understanding of self and the other person; as well as the desire to change and
be a better person. It's just an all round good story line and worth the price of admission if you ask me.
I hope you will give this and the rest of the Mackenzie series a try.

This was a great follow up to the first book in the series "Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie"
which I gave 5 stars and is one of my all time favorite reads.

The other books in the series are:
Book #1 - The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie (5 stars)
Book #2 - Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage (4 1/2 stars)
Book #3 - The Many Sins of Lord Cameron (will review soon but I'm going to re-read it first)
Book #4 - The Duke's Perfect Wife (can't wait to read it!!!!)

I absolutely fell in love with this story, Mac and Isabela's history is heartbreaking but that just made their reconciliation so much sweeter. They were fun, extremely sexy, and explosive together-- for good and for bad. To me, there is nothing better than a second chance romance, but when the hero takes such good care of the heroine and they remain faithful the years they are apart, it is so much better and that's what happened here. I HIGHLY recommend this book

I have never read anything by Jennifer Ashley before and I was surprised that so much could fit in such a small package. The characters are wonderful and I realize now that I have missed a great deal with Ian's story and I am absolutely intrigued. I must search out his book immediately! I am always glad to find another author and this was a delight. The way that characters are introduced is witty and comedic but provides a lot of insight about who those characters are and how they think. She hints about what their future stories might entail, encouraging you to keep reading the whole series. Now, despite starting out with the second book I believe, I was delighted and I cannot wait to go read the story of Ian and how he got put away in the asylum. This is a very internalized character and I cannot wait to hear how he thinks and analyzes the world around him.

Jennifer Ashley's Book 2 in the Mackenzie series, Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage is an instant classic. This historical romance is all about Mac Mackenzie - the ingenious artist - and Isabella - the runaway debutante. They met on her coming out party where Mac snuck in uninvited on a bet to kiss an unknown debutante. Smitten instantly, Mac whisked Isabella away and married her in a scandalous elopement. Their relationship began a tumultuous one and sadly continued down that same rugged path.

We first meet Isabella and Mac in The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie where we learned they'd been estranged; separated when Isabella left Mac and neither one had spoken to one another in over three years. It was the near death experience Ian and Beth endured, that brought them somewhat back together. Mac, shaken by the tragedy, took a second look at his life, making a vow to get Isabella back in his life - and in his bed.

Relationships are a funny thing. Isabella, after marrying the notorious Mac Mackenzie, was disowned by her family and then heavily scrutinized or slandered, rather by the ton. But the worst part of her marriage was Mac and his alcohol induced episodes. After three years of instability, followed by another three of loneliness - as much as Mac wanted her back - Isabella wasn't sure she could venture a second try at being married to such an incessantly maddening man.

What I loved about this book was Ashley stayed true to the characters in the Mackenzie's series - Mac and Isabella. This tale is not a roller coaster of plot twists - like the previous novel. Oh, it wouldn't be a Mackenzie story if there wasn't some sort of an evil opportunist threatening the livelihood of Mac and his family. And so there is a no name man, trying to impersonate the great Mac Mackenzie to the point of being delusional about Mac, his career, his family and even his wife, Isabella. Oh the plot does get delicious but that's not the crux of the book. What is then? Love.

The roller coaster ride in this book is an emotional one; all courtesy of its main characters, Mac & Isabella. Now with a renewed commitment on Mac's part, at what lengths will he go to mend Isabella's broken heart?

In order to get a true appreciation for this book, you must...MUST read The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie. Only then will you truly appreciate this tale. The Mackenzie dysfunction is alive and still thriving and as a vivacious reader of this series I promise you'll adore the glimpses of Ian and Beth as well as a few other family members.

Isabella and Max started their marriage so quick and ferocious but when their loss caused them to separate for such a long time they thought that being away would cause a change in how they feel for each other. Well when they see each other all those feelings return but will they be able to realize that they belong together. This was a sweet story.

Jennifer Ashley is one of my favorite authors and always turns out a very intriguing book. Historical books are not really my favorite venue but she has a way with the stories and characters that pulled me in anyway. I like this series of books because it involves a family that is disfunctional but pulls together in times of trouble. Isabella and her estranged husband have had a very rocky marriage and separation. He is a talented artist but got lost in the partying and fame of it. Isabella after much emotional trama with him finally walks away. It takes a incident with his brother to finally wake him up and realize what he's lost. A very good story. I will be reading the rest of the books in the series.

Isabella and Mac fell in love instantly. Mac was tempramental. As an artist he excused himself every time he disappeared with his friends. Isabella finally tired of the situation and left him. What a rude awaking for Mac. Their fight to get back together is amazing.

I love Jennifer Ashley and the MacKenzie series is one I've read a few times. Marry in haste, repent in leisure definitely applies in this case, especially when divorce is difficult and extremely expensive. But after a few years apart, this couple works out their issues. Definitely worth reading!

Lady Isabella's marriage to Mac Mackezie has been the talk of the town since the day they said `I do.' They married the night of her debut announcing her into society and the very next morning graced the pages of London's gossip column. Their marriage hit the society pages again when Isabelle left Mac a few years into their marriage. Fast forward three years later and circumstances bring Isabella and Mac together again. Someone is selling paintings around town claiming they are works completed by Mac, when in fact they are not. While Mac is ambivalent about discovering the forger's identity, Isabella is outraged that someone would try to pretend to have Mac's talent. This investigation is an excuse from them to rekindle the love they have always shared. While Isabella appears to be unable to ever return to Mac as his wife, he has a different view on the subject. He will stop at nothing to show her he has changed for the better to be the husband she deserves and vows to do everything he can to bring her back to his side...for good.

Mac is absolutely adorable. I can find no other way to describe him except as a reckless and charming man that will leave you breathless. You know he has hurt Isabella in the past, but the man we are introduced to is playful, humorous and seductive. He is absolutely loyal to Isabella despite everything they have been through and her ultimate protector. He is the hero any girl dreams of and the hero we wish lived in all our romance novels.

I'll be honest, at the beginning I thought Isabella was a complete idiot for leaving Mac. I couldn't imagine why she would leave the perfect hero I had been reading about. 'She must be one of those females,' I thought...the kind you want to smack and knock some sense into. Then you discover their past and realize the reasons behind her actions. You see her as woman helplessly in love with a man she feels is just out of her reach and she is beyond despair. She becomes a bold woman full of admirable qualities, just doing what she has to do to survive with her heart somewhat intact. It is easy to see why Mac is so devoted to her, for she is as stunningly beautiful and intelligent as he perceives her to be.

The first fifty pages, I was excited by the humor and frivolity of this novel. It seemed a fun and exciting novel to read. But do not mistake this novel for just a light read. There is plenty more beyond the cover to be discovered. It truly is an emotional story about love gained, lost and reclaimed again. Mac has horrible demons that overwhelmed him and forced his separation from his wife, despite how much they loved each other. They both have experienced hell and this is the story about the road they travel out of the deepest darkest pits of despair to reclaim some form of happiness.

Jennifer Ashley introduces an interesting method to tell their story. You are brought into this story during their first reunion since their separation. Why they separated is a story told through excerpts from gossip columns describing the events of their lives. And of course, as the story progresses, the characters themselves reveal the reasons behind what truly happened. When the story starts, their "new" courtship is filled with tension and humor, but slowly develops more depth and becomes more emotional.

In summary, you should not miss Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage. Ashley weaves a delightful tale that is sure to make you laugh, cry and sigh with delight. Her novel is a stunning example of how love cannot hold a marriage together, and can actual cause people to make poor decisions. Still, love can also bring clarity to some people and heal old wounds. Any fan of historical romance would be doing themselves a great injustice were they to miss this splendid tale!

Overall: 5/5
Heat Level: 4/5

I'd been looking forward to Isabella and Mac MacKenzie's story since the teaser at the end of THE MADNESS OF LORD IAN MACKENZIE. Husband and wife relationship issues is something I've always enjoyed in romances and this one looked to be quite good. And to an extent it is, just not as good as I had expected it to be. Although I found both Isabella and Mac to be engaging, appealing characters, their reconciliation was not developed in the book as well as I would have wished. One third of the way through the book, they're already having oral and/or manual sex, albeit not actual intercourse and that happens by about the halfway point. Now I enjoy a good sex scene well enough, but I wasn't ready for intimacy so soon. (Who asked me, you may say?) They still needed to talk out their issues much more. That was plain to see when we find that even after relatively regular intimate relations, they still couldn't agree about legally reversing their separation.

Jennifer Ashley is a pretty decent writer of romances but I felt that the additional plotlines about the man impersonating Mac, the lover and baby who show up at Kilmorgen when the MacKenzie family is spending time there, what happens to that baby, Isabella's family issues, all these things were a distraction from a fuller and more realistic reconciliation of a husband and wife who loved each other but had had difficulties living with each other. Nor did Ms Ashley make the most of the mystery involving the impersonator. I was expecting something more interesting, more compelling. And the subplot with baby Aimee was, IMO, a completely unnecessary distraction. Yes, the interaction of Mac with said baby shows Isabella that Mac would be a good father, but I still didn't need it in the book. (Again, who asked me?)

However, I do love the fact that both Mac and Isabella were celibate during their three and a half years of estrangement. All these heroes in romances who sleep around indiscriminately were getting to me and this was such a welcome change. Also, Ms Ashley does get across to the reader the love between H and h. You know it's not just lust. And who doesn't love the whole MacKenzie family? They're the most appealing romance book clan in recent years. Looking forward to the next book featuring brother Cameron.

I am loving this series and adore the Mackenzie brothers, but this is not strong book - check out the other reviewers for the full story. This story would have worked better, I think, if we'd been able to follow the story of Isabella and Mac from the beginning so we got a better feel for the terrible times they had. As it is, we join the story just as Isabella is starting to warm to Mac. I like the idea of Mac struggling to redeem himself. I also like the premise of Isabella coming to terms with her grief. Because we do not follow the story right from the beginning the build up to their eventual reconciliation lacks tension. The mad forger is a distraction and does not add to the development of the relationship between Mac and Isabella.

My verdict is this is a good story but not a great one. But I am really looking forward to hearing about Cam and Hart.

In 1875 when she was eighteen, Lady Isabella Scranton and Lord Mackenzie eloped; his family delighted in their marriage while hers disowned her Three years later, Isabella walked out of her marriage to the shock of her spouse and the condemnation for her scandalous behavior by the Ton.

Her estranged husband is a talented painter and three years since she left him, Isabella discovered someone is forging Mac's work. She goes to see him, but he is more concerned over winning a wager that he can paint an erotic portrait. He wants his wife to pose as the subject; she prefers to catch the forger. As they work on the painting the felonies, they recall why they fell in love and married; however neither is prepared for the forger whose obsession turns to having Isabella live and on canvas.

Jennifer Ashley follows up on the magnificent Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie with a sibling's strong Victorian second chance at love romance and a solid supporting mystery. The lead couple is a wonderful pairing of a debauched rake knowing he is not good enough for the goodness of his wife and a not so innocent "debutant". Readers will relish this terrific historical wondering why did the wife who obviously loves her husband leave him.

I liked the book - easy reading but... did not feel a very good connection between these two. I still did not figure out was Mac "did". Must have been one of the idle rich. The book seemed to take forever to progress and I agree with one of the other readers.. Mac and Isabella were forgettable. The entire forgery story just did not settle with me (it just seemed very strange).

My first book of Jennifer Ashley. This one won't stop me from reading. I am looking forward to reading Ian's and Cameron's books.

I was pleasantly surprised by this one. Having read the previous one and not liking it, I wasn't too sure about this one but wanted to give it a shot. I liked the touch of mystery that was running throughout the story, with Mac's imposter. I liked the wounded hero, Mac but I never warmed up to Isabella. She seemed a bit cold and I didn't really feel like she wanted to get back together with Mac even though she declaired her love for him.

I do look forward to the next in the series!

Lord Mac Mackenzie is a legend as a respected painter compared to the likes of Monet. Mac lives and breaths for his art, but his muse is missing. The reason is because his wife, who he loves dearly, left him three years ago after being fed up with his disappearing for weeks on end and drinking himself into a stupor. The moment his Isabella separated from him, Mac turned over a new leaf and would do whatever he could to make her come back. But it hasn't worked. Only recently have they started talking again after Mac's brother, Ian married. But she still keeps him at arm's length and it's killing him having her so close and not being able to enjoy those marital relations they both couldn't get enough of.

Mac is in for a great surprise when Isabella comes to see him at his home. She has found out that another man is impersonating him and selling his paintings signed with Mac's signature, trademark style, brushwork and use of colors. Mac shrugs it off because he paints for the love of it, not for the reputation or the coin it brings him. But since Isabella is upset about it, he will investigate the matter. This is also his way of keeping Isabella close and courting her again so they can go back to being husband and wife.

Isabella longs for Mac desperately and gave up so much for him the moment they met and kissed at a ball when she was eighteen. That very same night they ran off and eloped. Isabella was disowned by her father and not allowed any communication with her mother or younger sister because of Mac's reputation of being a careless rogue. They shared a passion and love for one another that still burns brightly, but she can't forgive Mac for leaving her one time too many after a horrible event that occurred where she lost something very special.

Mac has much to atone for and is willing to do whatever he can to show Isabella that he is more mature, steady and the only thing he craves is a strong brew of tea, and of course her body. Isabella finally gives into temptation and welcomes those pleasures they both have denied themselves for so long. But Mac doesn't just want these intimacies Isabella is willing to offer him. He wants a true marriage. Isabella won't budge with her decision. But when Mac's copy cat grows dangerous and Isabella is targeted, Mac rises up, and with his brothers as backup, will stop this blackguard from running his happiness that is within reach.

When Jennifer Ashley released The Madness of Lord Ian, she wrote a very moving and poweful novel about a very special type of hero and his undying devotion for his lady. With Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage, Jennifer has gone back to the basics. And that is where the problem lies. Because The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie took major chances, this tale about Ian's brother Mac, and his marital woes left some things to be desired.

Jennifer can really write outstanding love scenes, and the relationship the Mackenzie brothers have with one another is wonderful. Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage comes across a bit too soap opera in its telling with too many issues occurring all at once. Not only do we have the Mac and Isabella dynamic, but Mac being targeted by some deranged individual, plus too many mentions of subplots dealing with Mac's brothers that happened in Ian's book, as well as a secret plot cliché that comes out of nowhere. When I read it, I almost couldn't stop from rolling my eyes.

I did find Mac and Isabelle to be very enjoyable characters, but Isabella comes across as a bit of a tease. She is all for keeping her separation as it stands, but has no problem in acting on some lusty love she and Mac had together when they first were married. She makes the first move in such a way where I found it all very unrealistic. If you are a woman who doesn't want to rebuild your marriage and have stated it time and again to your husband, who wants nothing more than to have a marriage in truth, then why are you having certain intimacies with him that gives him false hope? Comes across as selfish and greedy to me. Actions may speak louder than words, but the way Isabella wanted her cake, and they way she ate it, put me out of sorts. I couldn't understand her motivation even though it is explained in what I guess is a reasonable manner. But when all was said and done, it just didn't ring true to me.

The dramatic ending is another cliché that has been showing up all too often in historical romance and really could have been left out. The best sections were Mac and Isabella's interactions with Ian and Beth, who also have a few lovely surprises for the readers who can't get enough of this couple.

Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage is a simple read with a great deal of hot love play and much pushing and pulling from the two main characters whose actions may irk some readers. I was one of them. But, I do look forward to reading the next book in this series about Cameron, who is a big time rake, and his new love with a heroine, who may seem to be the complete opposite of everything he is attracted to in a woman.

Jennifer Ashley's Mackenzie series is one of those series that is a cut above many romance novels - her prose and plotting are seamless, and her character development shows flawed people with real problems, and the solutions to those problems make great reading. Not to mention, the Mackenzie men are just HOT! I love Mac - the temperamental artist, the romantic who can't paint without his "muse." He is less tortured than some of his brothers, but just as complex and layered. Isabella grows through her initial infatuation with Mac to the realization that she can love the man he has become after his drinking destroys their marriage, and all in all, this is a satisfyingly resolved story.

Not a bad lead male, but nowhere as interesting as his brother Ian. A bit repetitious in parts and the story line of his double was weak and not as well developed as it could have been. Although not great, I am still willing to go on to the next and give Cameron a try.

Any story would be difficult to follow Lord Ian Mackenzie. But this story had to many odd parts to it. The stalker/impostor was simply implausible to me and the decent of insanity barely worth a chapter much less a book.
