A long-missing aircraft full of chemical weapons, an icy lake bottom, a deadly conspiracy that crosses two continents, and Dirk Pitt... What's not to love?
I think this was the second Dirk Pitt novel I ever read, and it remains one of my favorites. The technology and politics haven't aged very well, but it takes me about a page and a half to forget that as Clive Cussler draws me into the story.
Don't miss "Vixen 03." It's undiluted high-octane Dirk Pitt. Now where did I put my scuba tanks?
- Jeff Edwards, award-winning author of Torpedo

Clive Cussler is one of my favorite writers - I wish I had the time and energy to write reviews for all of his books. My father got me hooked (we're both scuba divers) about ten years ago, and I own all of his books to date. They're so well written, narratively, but there are a few things that bug me overall:
- Dirk Pitt never ages! - There's a lot of exposition through dialogue. - Some of the scenarios, especially the "bad guys" are so outdated - example, Vixen 03 was written to be set in 1988 and it shows. - Likewise for the technology.
But as I said, Cussler is one of my favorite authors, and I'll continue to read anything he pens.

Okay I watched the movie Sahara, based on the Clive Cussler, Dirk Pitt novel. Movie wasn't all that great, but I figured the book must be good if they were willing to make a movie about the character.
Well I started at the begining of the Dirk Pitt adventure series and I haven't been dissappointed. They just keep getting better.
Vixen 03 is the fifth book in the series. Once again we find our NUMA special projects leader diving in over his head. From a South African civil war brewing, to a plague capable of wiping out entire civilizations, and an attack on the nation's capital this book keeps you rocketing foward. Pitt's Sherlock Holmes mind, his way with the ladies, and his overwhelming desire to solve any problem he is faced with gives you a real page turner character. Fans of his side-kick Giordino will once again enjoy his unwaivering loyalty and his quick one-liners.

Mr. Cussler is masterful story teller. The characters are full of mischief and you find yourself rooting for them immediately. A word of caution however, his books are not for a casual reader. There is an abundance of details and seperate story lines that converge and this often will lose the interest of a reader not ready for the long haul. Worth the read if you have the time to invest.

This one seemed to be less surface with Dirk, more about what drives him, less of Dirk keeping all the secrets til the end of the book where he shows the villain how he knew all along (which I didn't really mind--I love Pitt's notorious witt and ego). He had more depth in this book, maybe because it involved a woman throughout instead of in periphery. I did feel that the book, in general, flowed a bit less smooth than the previous few, but Cussler did spend much more time than usual in the eyes of other characters, and that could be why. Overall, a solid read--highlighted with a couple very nice copter scenes.

This book started out really good. Out of all the beggining were a ship was destroyed this had the best. AT first i thought that it was just getting off to a slow start. I thought that with all this boring stuff that they would at least put on a great ending action part. I was wrong. This has Giorodino in it for about two secounds, and Dirk Pitt takes forever to fight in the end. I have enjoyed all other Dirk Pitt books that I have read except Raise the Titanic. So Check out the other ones and forget about this one.

Dirk Pitt is just getting started and his character is a bit rough around the edges, but, as usual its a FUN book to read. I always wonder how Pitt is going to solve the mystery, and, he never fails. If you want a good book to sit on the beach and read on a weekend, this will fill the bill. If you like Cussler, you won't be disappointed.

Reissued in August 2006, the novel is part of the Dirk Pitt series; an ongoing character from Clive Cussler.
The action surrounds a U.S. aircraft, Vixen 03, that crashes in a Colorado lake in 1954. It contained 36 quick-death germ bombs, but two are missing when Pitt and his pals find the sunken plane some 30 years later.
The missing canisters are in the hands of some bad guys whose mission is to sail a battleship up the Potomic River and unleash the bombs on Washington. D.C.
The premise is a bit silly and the writing is highly dated (the novel was initially published in the 1970s). Pitt seemingly has super-hero qualities - without having to dress in a phone-booth - and his pals always seem to arrive just in the nick of time to grab victory out of the clutches of defeat. I was waiting for "zowie," "pow," and "bam" to roll from the pages as the good guys battle those pesky evil-doers!
The novel sets up well to the point of the discovery of the aircraft and Pitt piecing together the mystery surrounding the crash. After that, it becomes a tepid battle against time, with a sophomoric ending worthy of a creative writing class, circa 7th Grade.

The book Vixen 03 starts quickly and continues to move at a fast pace throughout the story. Dirk Pitt is the kind of man who women dream of but can never find. There is always a beautiful woman in the stories, who knows she must take whatever he gives before he "rides off into the sunset". In the very beginning of the book, the story of Vixen 03 seems to be true and then when the plot is explained to the reader, the story line moves quickly. As usual Dirk comes to the rescue and saves the country. Of course, Dirk is bigger than life and does things in a big way but it is fun to read about someone who does things well. The everyday troubles of life are not what I want to read about. I want to have someone to dream about and take me away from the everyday problems.

Here's Dirk Pitt doing what he does best... saving the world. How can you not love a book where terrorists use a decomissioned battleship to shell D.C.? The political scenario is long out of date, but that doesn't hurt the book much. Die hard Pitt fans, and newbies will all find something to love here.

Clive Cussler never fails to excite, and intrigue. This is one of his BEST books! If you're a Cussler fan who's never read Vixen, or just the average adventure/spy/action novel fan, this book is a sure fire hit.

Having read most of the Dirk Pitt Novels to date, I have to say that Vixen 03 was the least enthralling.
Maybe because it is the most plausible or perhaps most mundane of Cussler's Pitt scenarios, It reads almost like a typical young adult novel of low caliber action.
