I thought this booked worked on all levels. Good story, believable characters, and a fun idea carried through.
I only gave it 4 stars because I like a book to tie up all loose strings and not leave you needing a second book to finish the story.

I came across this title in my recommendations a couple weeks ago and almost picked it up after reading the title alone, but the summary really clinched it for me.

From the beginning I could tell this would be a fun read and I just couldn't put it down until I was done. Matter of fact it was such a fun read that over the next week I reread it several times. This book is a pretty decent length for the price, and unlike some other novels that I've paid more for there's nothing bad enough for me to complain about except for the wait I'm going to have waiting for sequels.

Absolutely a great story for young adults or adults that enjoy super hero adventures (albeit villains in this case). A number of small issues do beg attention, but the author has responded that many questions and situations causing the head-scratching will be answered in the second book. Altogether an enjoyable and engaging novella that will soon suck you into the mad scientist world of budding super villains.

I couldnt believe this didnt have a tvtropes page! so i made it one: [...]

I saw the ads everywhere so I read it. It wasnt quite what I expeected from the summary and first couple of chapters, espesially the characters: I thought it would be about their attempts to clear their names and become heroes, but it was more about them having a damn good time being evil and loving every moment. It was so funny, espesiallly the scewne with the German Granade, idk why that one scene just had me crying with laughter. I so want a sequal and i willl read more by the author.

I liked the story.... Unfortunately the quality control of the paperback version is a little shoddy. Every 3rd page was faded, as though the printer was running out of ink. It was still readable, but it was definitely noticeable.

Quite a fun read; deconstructs the superhero story from the point of view of an anti-villain - that is, someone who is trying to be a villain but keeps accidentally pursuing the heroine's path to do so. I'd definitely be interested in reading more than the original trilogy.

I love these characters, the pacing and the sense of humor. There are a few moments in plot and character actions that I'm having trouble fully believing, but none of it prevented me for tearing through this book and immediately buying the next one.

This is the latest in a series of superhero novels from the villian(s) point of view. This is quite different from others in that it's far more light hearted. Many of the villians gadgets are based on a real time strategy game (similar to starcraft) they play. The different powers were more varied that just the typical fare, which is a welcome change. The plot centers around the main characters (who are quite young) trying to find their place in the powered community, and is handled very well. Should be fine for kids; didn't notice anything questionable.

Awesome book. Conveys the unique sensations that come with coming of age, while at the same time, conveying a rich superhero universe, with memorable characters, fantastic if occasionally silly inventions; and a hilarious plot. A great read for anyone who has ever been called a "wierdo."

My first foray into the works of Richard Roberts, and I am quite impressed. The characters are engaging as Penny tries to do the right thing, but events just keep working against her. It is a book that hints at the possibility of a sequel, and if one does happen to come down the pike, I will be the first in line to pick it up. I highly recommend this as a top-quality read.

Come on, this story's just getting started! It needs to be at least a trilogy. A ten-volume epic following the characters all the way to retirement would be better. Also movies. I think it should be obvious I liked the book.

I only meant to read through the sample. I thought it was so good that I bought the rest of the book as soon as I finished the sample. Then I spent the rest of my free time today reading through the whole thing. It was that good.

This one did.

Who doesn't remember being misunderstood? Accused of planning nefarious acts when you really only meant to do something that sounded perfectly innocent until it kind of backfired?

The eponymous VILLAIN certainly knows how it feels - and instead of wallowing in self-pity, she goes and does something about it, misguided though it may be. And if things only go downhill from there. Or uphill, if you happen to be a reader - who will be checking for sequels as religiously as she did for those little Infernal Devices titles out there.

Very enjoyable, adorable, exciting book. It kept me turning pages, and I'm looking forward to any sequels that show up. I would describe it as the web comic "Girl Genius" mixed with the type of setting from the movie "Incredibles".

I discovered Richard Roberts by happening across a free copy of Quite Contrary, a middle grade book that seemed to have widely controversial list of reviews. Some loved it, some hated it, some were so completely offended by the first chapter, they put it aside.
I’m on the “loved it,” team.

I also figured, Mr. Roberts would be one of those authors who I’d have to parse out my enjoyment. So, instead of jumping into the purchase of every single book he’s published, I sat back to enjoy delayed gratification.

All I can say, is while I still won’t be buying all of his works all at once, I am such a fan that I will eventually own the full collection. I am actually glad I waited. His books are hitting Audible and that’s how I get most of my reading done lately. Even though I’ve already read it, I’ve got the Audible version of Quite Contrary on my wish list.

Please Don’t Tell My Parents I’m a Supervillian, is not what I expected. I thought it would be about a character who reveled in villainy. While she does enjoy quite a bit of that aspect, Penny’s first instinct is not to commit crime. So throughout the book, the conflict is internal, how can she be a superhero when her superpower fits so well in the other side?

Interestingly enough, this one isn’t quite as controversial, not even getting less than three stars on three sites. I expected that. People who are reading this are those of us who are superhero nerds pondering over the idea that this isn’t a graphic novel. Of course, there are those who’s enjoyment comes from poking holes in the premise (i.e. how does Superman fly?). But it’s still enjoyment. It’s still coming from people who’ve read the entire thing.

I listened to this after finding it on Audible Daily Deals. Emily Zeller does a fantastic job with this one. You can tell she enjoys being Penny. There’s laughter all through it because Penny enjoys being herself. She just has one little secret.

I can’t wait to share this one with my kiddos and see what they think.

I don’t think that it matters what age you are. I think every superhero fan will like this.

I love mad scientist stories. Even better when they're villains that do good stuff occasionally. This is a bit different from that, but in all the right ways. Try the sample, and then buy the book. You will not regret it.

This book has some of the best, most complete characterizations and thorough world building I've encountered in a while, all wrapped up in a fast-paced, light and funny story appropriate for all ages. Expect to lose precious sleep time, laugh, cheer, groan, and think. Highly recommended.

This was a pleasant surprise. Well developed characters set in a world I would love to see more of. I anxiously await a sequel. Worth the price of admission...was glued to my kindle for the whole thing.

CW: Rape

I couldn't keep reading. The casual way that it was disclosed that the main character was the product of rape, but without any apparent stigma because it was a woman using mind control powers on men...

"Claire really didn’t know who her father was. Apparently there had been a lot of candidates, thanks to her mother’s power of Clouding Men’s Minds. If ‘minds’ was the right word.

And Claire was looking forward to inheriting those powers."

I was expecting something silly, after seeing thee name, but it was so cheap I decided to just go for it. This is a good read, the story just kept surprising me, and by the end I was hoping there was some sequel, over-arching universe, or spin-off that would continue the story.

Really nice read, teenage angst, done right. Main charater tries to fit in and be a normal girl which becomes almost impossible. Good story about best intentions, doing the right thing, and finding yourself.

Very much a young adult style novel. The characters manage to work their way out of every situation and earn the respect they are looking for but not in the way they expected, etc. Some plot holes that can be ignored for the most part but worth picking up.

I enjoy well-written super-hero fiction and this is definitely well-written super-hero fiction. The characters are fun to read. The descriptions are well done, finding ways to describe the fights in a way that makes sense without bogging the action down into turn-by-turn detail. The only real caveat is that this book is not really a deep look at super-heroes and super-villainy. Yes, there's some minor peril involved, but for the most part, it makes the actions of the protagonists completely consequence-free and they seldom are challenged for long. It's a kid's book, so I can pretty much give it a bye on that, but I would have enjoyed having the characters struggling with some problem for more than a chapter, or at least have them lose at least once.
