This book is great. The author writes for the New Yorker, Esquire and The Simpsons, so I figured the book would have the cleverness and (occasional) subtlety that makes humor work. It defintely did. There were lots of great scenes and lines. The best friend character is particularly well done. This seems destined to be a movie, but, as always, the book captures the thoughts of the characters in a way that movies never can, so don't wait for the movie.

I really enjoyed this book especially because I grew up in this area. It's strange to read all of the references to the local area. The writing is light, fun, and relate-able. A fun read and good for a lot of laughs.

It was written with the level of humor Larry brought to the Simpsons. Its an easy read. Unpredictable for the most part. But the same surprise keeps coming up and it gets old after a while. The depth of the characters grows even in the short time they are together. However, the end is somewhat disapointing. Get it if you want a quick, easy, and whitty read. But don't get your hopes too high.

I ordered this book for a summer reading program for my 14 yr old daughter. She never even got to hold the book....It was Awful!!! In the preface, it stated that the book was considered NC-17 and it had been banned in 38 states. It also used very, very foul language....in the preface as well as when I skimmed through the book. Be careful parents.....The movie is PG-13, but the book is NC-17!

One of the most enjoyable, entertaining books I've read in a long, long time. I read the book in two sittings, finishing up at 4 a.m. this morning. I laughed my way throughout, to the dismay of my wife who I'm afraid was trying to sleep. This is a funny, fast-paced read, and I was actually more than a bit sad to see it end, which is always the sign of an excellent book. I hope it finds the large audience it deserves.

This was one of those "Sixteen Candles" type stories that just makes you laugh out loud over and over. Quick paced and very fresh, I think it would make a great vacation book. All of the characters, from the geeky to the popular, are enjoyable.

This book is great-I laughed the whole way through. I graduated from high school years ago, but I could still laugh at, cringe at and feel for what these charaters experience. We've all been there and Larry Doyle makes us remember what it was all like in a smart and funny way.

The movie started out funny but then became a little too offensive. As a United States Soldier I was appauled at their persona of an American Soldier. An Infantryman with a temper is one thing but to have an actor don a replica of a Military Uniform and portray a Pill poppin, coke snorting, bully is a disgrace. They could have given the same part to the same guy, and left the uniform out of it. As a member of the Army for the last 12 years, I am officially offended.

The book was definitely a funny read. It was quick-witted, sharp-tongued, and riddled with jabs at all those different people we knew in high school. Calling it a novel is generous, it is more like a treatment of the next in a long line of high school comedies about the awkward kid. Denis is a hero to nerds everywhere. Endlessly funny, and a quick read.

After reading the other reviews I was really looking forward to this. I thought the premise seemed worthwhile. Unfortunately, I didn't like it at all. There were too many creeps and stereotypical types for my taste. It seemed that angry undertones were directed at all those that aren't brilliant nerds.

First I watched the movie before I read the book - and I can tell you that I was not interested at all to read the book because the movie was sooooo boring! The story was too cliche (like trying to become like American Pie-kinda-movie but failed (sorry). The main character is tooo geeky! Can't stand watching him! Anyway, this might be good for anybody who's longing for a light comedy thing...
