This is my second time through the series. I find I appreciate these stories and pick more details out the more I read them. I love fantasy and I can easily place myself in these stories. I have lent these out to numerous friends who have also enjoyed them and recommend them to any fantasy reader. I'm off to purchase the Harry Dresden series! Enjoy!

Some people have said that this is the weaker book in the series but I didn't find that to be the case. This has just as much drama and suspense as the first. I was taken in by Tavi's plight and look forward to the next one!

Classic genre fantasy with a nice conceit (the furies), very well written. A fast read. It's not true "hard fantasy" in the style of Brandon Sanderson, but Butcher at least thinks through some of the consequences of the magical powers with which he endows his characters.
The Mark of the Assassin (Michael Osbourne Book 1) :: The Messenger (Gabriel Allon Series Book 6) :: The Secret Servant (Gabriel Allon) :: The Defector (Gabriel Allon) :: The Tinkerer's Daughter

Jim Butcher is an amazing story teller. I discovered him thanks to the store recommending his other series, the Dresden Files, to me. After getting caught up on that series and waiting for the next title to be released, I decided to check out his other series, Codex Alera. I generally don't read a lot of high fantasy, and was especially dubious about a series that started off as a bet, but wanted to give it a shot given my love of his other work. Who would have thought that the lost Roman legion and Pokémon would inspire a NYT best selling series?
There is a wonderful blend of mystery, action, whit, suspense, humor, and romance in these novels and appeals to a wide audience. The story is comprised of several different character arcs artfully woven together to progress the overall plot, which helps keep things interesting and creates quite a few cliffhangers throughout each book. Overall, a great read!

I LOVE Jim Butcher books, this is a very refreshing series. All the hallmarks of a great fantasy series, with a different kind of magic. Engaging heroes, dang good conflicted villains, and politics in a way that isn't boring.

A good book, nothing great, but still good. I don't think Jim Butcher will ever do anything better than the Dresden Files and maybe its unfair of me to compare the two, but that's where my mind went and I have to assume that I'm not the only one. It's worth the read if you're just looking for a fun quick read until the next Dresden book comes out.

The book was fine, but the Kindle version was not up to par. I think they put it the store without an editing pass because there were numerous typos. Nothing that wasn't understandable, but it seems unprofessional to frequently have missing spaces between words and other easily caught errors.

Tavi's time at the city shoed that his principles were not going to change because of it. He just got stronger and made friends with the people who would change his life as he would change theirs.
Very well written and I couldn't leave the book till the end. Almost 24 hours. Very good indeed!!

Putting this same review on all books in the series because I can't remember book-by-book specifics. This series is really good! Good characters that I found myself rooting for the whole time, great magic system, and surprises abound throughout!

I have read the entire Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher and love that series. While waiting for the next book to come out in that series I decided to read the Codex Alera series. This is a fast moving epic tale based on a fantasy version of the Roman Empire. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves this kind of story telling.
