The premise of this book sounded interesting, and it was a good idea, just not well researched. When ever I read a period piece, and I read a lot of them, I expect a certain level of historically accuracy. This novel was all over th place. The most glaring example being that he went from muzzle loader straight to cartridges. The only thing that would make me refer this book is the price, free.

I do not seek out westerns. Imagine my surprise when the story and the characters drew me in. This is a fun read. It was a little predictable which is why I rate it a strong 4 star work rather than 5. It is a perfect light adventurous escape.

This straightforward novel was a refreshing read, which I enjoyed very much. I liked this aspect of it, and its clean, clear morality. The protagonist is an honorable man with a committed sense of decency. A Refreshingly, likeable story. Thank you.

The author must have previously written grade school material. Endless repetition of numerous words. Counted "he" or "his" 20+ Times on a kindle page several times when it became irritating. Plot was good, so a rewrite of the book by a decent editor could bring it to 4 or 5 stars. Great for a junior high reader except for a couple"steamy" scenes.

This novel is written for about a teenage audience but what the heck i am in my second childhood anyway. But when Sage wants to set up the Diego Ranch as a communist commune the author lost me as a repeat reader. Actually I didn't finish the book.

Honestly, I was only able to read a few paragraphs before I gave up the chase.
This book would probably be more appropriate for a very young reader rather than an adult.
I hate to be unkind, but the author's writing style did make it very hard to concentrate on the story he was trying to tell.

good historical guideline of life in the frontier for a boy orphaned at age twelve to maturity while isolated from society. A reasonable progression of survival learning while alone. All in All satisfactory reading

I had a hard time stopping and doing something else. I could not wait to get back to reading the book. I had to purchase the second book about Sages son "Puma". The book is very good and I will continue to read books by this author.

This book needs a bit of polish. Teaching Native Americans to forage shows incomplete research IMHO. That being said I enjoyed reading this book overall once I understood there would be twisted facts was hoe the writer was able to tell their story.

I began the book with high hopes of an interesting story but I was sorely disappointed. The dialogue was amateurish and redundant. Situations and decisions were often repeated leaving the reader confused as to why the author would do this continually throughout the book. I'm left with the belief that it was done simply to increase the "word count".

A twelve year old finds himself stranded in the western wilderness and from things he rembered learning from his father, a ship builder, and observation of wild animals becomes an expert tracker and hunter. He not only survives but thrives. The story is alright but overly long

Started out as a halfway interesting story and then quickly went downhill. Like the mountain lion that was so big it could not get into the cave that Sage was living in. Since when is there a puma larger then a 6 foot plus 200# plus man that readily used the entrance.

Easy reading, easy to follow and believeable story line. Good character definition and interesting story. Dicksion tells a great story, very similar to Louis LeAmore stories.
Beem reading western stories since I was 10 and this one is as good as any I've read. Would recommend

Very enjoyable to read. A classic western with good old cowboys and Indians. The main character becomes something of a superhero that you can cheer for throughout the story. Refreshing to read about the assimilation of different cultures and the power of the human spirit.

I am writing this review for my husband. He told me this was the most enjoyable book he has read. The story was very interesting and kept his attention throughout the book. He didn't find the writing irritating as some other reviewers have said. He said he would recommend it to anyone who likes the old western style.
