The world of medical students is fraught with exhaustion from working too many hours that any human being should endure and with tension from working in an urban Emergency Room rife with life and death scenes. It all requires the utmost tenacity, refined medical skills and the patience and calm of a saint! This is the world of Emma and Zadie, two best friends, who are about to undergo a true test of their solid rock friendship. Add to that their male friends, Dr. Nick Xenokostas and Graham. The time element in this story goes back and forth from past to present and back.
The story concerns scenes that make Gray’s Anatomy and other medical TV shows seem tame in comparison. For reality isn’t pared back in a novel. So for the squeamish of heart, you’ve been warned! Blood, guts and gore as well as actions and reactions force the reader to flip the pages and want to stay up way past a normal bedtime. No spoilers here but two particular events score the plot with tension and shock!
Exhausted doctors or even doctors handling multiple near-fatality emergency room scenes will make mistakes! Those inadvertent errors can wreck a person’s career and such a danger is posed for Emma upon the death of a little girl. The minutiae of that scene will be repeated in her mind as well as the minds of her physician peers and the family of the little girl. The outcome of this processing will absolutely amaze the reader!
Relationships happen out of all this chaos and non-stop turmoil. Some make sense and some take twists and turns that make no sense. But they happen to Emma, Graham, Zadie and Nick and they are life-shattering. How much wrongdoing can one forgive and should one even consider forgiveness?
Kimmery Martin is a past medical doctor who knows her professional world well. This is a well-written, intense, caring, brutal and shocking story that is written with sensitivity and care, enabling the reader to enter this world as fully as possible and root for every character, halting judgment and awaiting the evolution of healing and grace on every page. Highly recommended medical fiction!

This was one of those compulsive books for me, especially with how the author set up the alternating POVs and the back-and-forth from the girls' student days to adulting days. Once upon a time, I was also a Grey's Anatomy groupie (until things went down with my favorite character, Lexie. I wasn't able to recover & haven't watched a minute since. I digress...) so I love how this book is being compared to the show. In addition to the author's easy writing, I also really enjoyed how she seamlessly intertwined medical jargon. It felt like an exhilarating, while sometimes traumatizing, look behind the curtain. It was highly interesting to see the author's background come alive on the page. I definitely recommend for those who enjoy medical dramas -- or drama in general!

The Queen of Hearts is one intense debut from Kimmery Martin! Readers will be instantly pulled into Zadie and Emma's fierce friendship and their turbulent time as medical students in the ER.

Switching between past and present in alternating voices, The Queen of Hearts dives into Zadie and Emma's personal and professional lives as it leads them to the moment Dr. X returns. Zadie is a married mother of four and a pediatric cardiologist. Emma is a married mother of one and a trauma surgeon. They have been best friends forever, but there are secrets regarding a traumatic experience in their third year of med school that could threaten their friendship. Dr. X's return brings those memories and guilt surging forward. When all is exposed, both Zadie and Emma learn what's really at stake.

This is the kind of story where you know what's coming, but still, it hurts to read it. You may not know how everything is going to go down, or what exactly the secret is, but the story provides a building block of clues to soften the blow that inevitably comes. As imperfect humans, sometimes we want what we shouldn't and desire what others have because of our own insecurities. Kimmery Martin explores such notions and more in this heartbreaking medical drama. It's an insightful and engaging read that once I started reading I had to race to finish! It pulled me in with the promise of an authentic inside look at medical students in hospital rounds and kept me invested in the lives of wholly human characters.

The Queen of Hearts is drama filled and really makes you feel for the characters. This is a shining debut you can't miss!

Thank you to Berkley Publishing for my free review copy. All opinions are my own.

The Queen of Heartsby Kimmery Martin is about friendship and betrayal with a whole lot of drama and medical excitement mixed in. The story is told in dual points of view, by friends Zadie and Emma, as well as in present day and through past events. The frequent change ups on the narrator perspectives and contrasting time frames almost made me loose my mind! Not because it was confusing, the story was easy to follow, but because just when I would get close to filling in a missing piece to the puzzle I had to flip to a different scenario. I immediately related to Zadie and couldn't get enough of her daughter, Delaney's shenanigans. This story had parts that were literally laugh-out-loud funny and others that broke my heart. I kept thinking I knew how it would turn out because Kimmery Martin would't break my heart like that... You'll have to read it for yourself to find out if Kimmery shattered my heart into a million pieces or if I still want to be friends with her.

If you enjoy stories with loads of medical jargon, think E.R. or Grey's Anatomy, lover's drama, female friendships, betrayal and forgiveness do yourself a favor and READ THIS BOOK!

I give this one 4.5 stunning stars out of 5.

This book felt a little quieter than books I have read recently. It was a refreshing change of pace, however, from the thrillers and fast-paced books with lots of drama that I have been reading. It was a real character-focused book on two best friends since their school years, Zadie and Emma.

Throughout the book there is an undercurrent of tension regarding an event that took place during their third year of medical school. We find out pretty quickly some of the looser details but have to wait up until the very end to learn all the dramatic details, most of which I found slightly unrealistic. This did not, however, change my impression of the rest of the book, even when I was incredibly annoyed with the very last section of the book.

I really enjoyed the different doses of life as a doctor in North Carolina; their practices, hospital responsibilities, family life, their social events and such. I am endlessly fascinated by medical dramas, and even though this dealt more with their outside lives, it remained true throughout.

I really enjoyed this author's writing and the slow build up to the reveal that she presented. I will definitely be looking out to see what else she may write as well as checking out her blog for her own book recommendations.

When a former colleague (Nick) reenters their lives, a long-time friendship between women (Zadie and Emma) is tested.

Written by a doctor, the story alternates between 1999 and the present and is told by Zadie, a pediatric cardiologist (married to Drew with 4 kids: 8 yo Rowan, 6 yo twins Eli and Finn, and 3 yo Delaney) and Emma, a trauma surgeon (married to Wyatt with one son, 3 yo Henry). When a former colleague takes a job at Emma's practice, secrets from the past are revealed. Is Zadie and Emma's friendship strong enough to survive the revelations? Read this medical drama to find out!

Three year old Delaney was my favorite character in this book. She was very entertaining and added small dashes of humor. I love you, dahling! Haha.

I very much enjoyed this debut novel and would recommend it for fans of medical dramas, such as Grey's Anatomy or ER. While the plot was a bit predictable, I liked the author's writing style, and the mix of drama and humor. I would definitely read more from this author!

Thank you to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for a free ARC of this book! All opinions are my own.

Doctors Zadie and Emma have been best friends for decades, weathering medical school together and something terrible that happened in their third year there. What exactly that was, and why it was so devastating, gets brought back up when their old friend Dr. Nick moves to Charlotte. With flashbacks between present day goings on in Charlotte, NC, and their medical school days in Louisville, KY, the picture starts to come into focus, until we’re left with the shattering truth. The descriptions of the medical aspects of this book are fantastic, from an emergency “cric” at the pool to endless trauma at the hospital – Kimmery Martin (a doctor) clearly knows her stuff and how to make it compelling, and also “humerus.” (chuckle) Something tells me that the more outrageous of the medical vignettes were probably real life experiences from her own training. As far as the plot drama goes though, the final explanation seemed a little awkward and not entirely plausible. Sure, good people do bad things sometimes, but I wasn’t left satisfied with the explanation. Read it for the medical drama, skim the relationship stuff.

The Queen of Hearts is about two best friends, Zadie and Emma, who have known each other since their twenties. They have experienced everything today from being their for each other during heartbreaks to the stressful intensity of medical school. Zadie is a pediatric cardiologist and Emma is a trauma surgeon. And although they may seem like they have it all - an old secret is about to come out after the return of someone from their past.

At first my fear was that the medical jargon was going to be too much for me. I am a fan of Grey's Anatomy but this was a bit more than that and their were times I felt slightly lost. This did not have any bearing on my judgement of the book though because I felt challenged, which I vastly enjoyed.

Overall, this was a well-written and engaging debut from Kimmery Martin! I have seen it said before but I will say it again. If you like Grey's Anatomy or Big Little Lies then you will like this novel. I immediately...and I mean literally the next day...handed my copy over to a friend of mine who is a nurse. Cannot wait to hear what she thinks!

Combine late hours working at the hospital with an irresistible, handsome, charming and persistent doctor…friendships and disasters go hand in hand in Kimmery Martin’s debut, The Queen of Hearts. Zadie and Emma are best friends, from medical school to the present, currently living in North Carolina and both practicing doctors. But as close as they were and are, there are still deep secrets they haven’t shared with each other, and when an old colleague moves to town, it conjures up the past memories, and they are forced to reveal some painful truths from their youth.

Kimmery Martin shows us how relationships evolve and grow overtime, so much so that when lives become intertwined, lifelong friendship can prevail and even the worst betrayal can be forgiven.

I do love a love triangle in a medical setting, and for those who enjoy tv shows like ER, Grey’s Anatomy and Chicago Med, this wonderful tale of the heart is for you!

A wonderful medical drama! I enjoyed The Queen of Hearts by Kimmery Martin very much. This book is a great story of friendship, family and the enormous responsibility as well as the grind of doctors' lives. A great balance of seriousness and entertainment, this book was a fast and enjoyable read. Two best friends both work in the medical field and have been friends for a very long time. With the longevity of the friendship they think they know everything about one another, but they will find out through this book how little they knew and if their friendship can survive the truth.

At the heart of this book, it is a book about friendship. The ups and downs that friendships can take and through jobs, relationships, family and so on some friendships can stand the test of time and some get a little battered.

This book takes place in Charlotte, NC. And as I lived there right out of college and there are not a lot of books set in this little city, it was so fun to "revisit" it through a fictional book. The little Charlotte moments really made this book a special read for me!

Zadie and Emma have been friends for years. They attended medical school together and are now enjoying successful careers as doctors in Charlotte, North Carolina. But when a former colleague moves to Charlotte, secrets from the past resurface and their friendship is put to the test.

This book was like an episode of Grey's Anatomy. It had friendship, romance, betrayal, secrets, heartbreak, and even some medical stuff thrown in. I enjoyed Zadie's story line, particularly how she was trying to juggle being a doctor, mother, and wife. While the book moved in some predictable directions, I still was caught a little off guard during the last few chapters in the book. I thought the alternating timelines was done well and overall this was an enjoyable read.

Thank you to First to Read for the opportunity to read an advance digital copy! I was under no obligation to post a review and all views expressed are my honest opinion.

Kimmery Martin’s debut novel is the story of two friends, betrayal, and the possibility of forgiveness. Zadie and Emma meet in medical school and become dependable friends as they experience the ins and outs of their medical training.

There are highs and lows that I imagine only people who’ve worked in a hospital or shared the common bond of med school can truly understand. Martin’s descriptive writing kept me interested, especially when I didn’t have a clue if what was happening during procedures, etc. was realistic. Given her real life experience as an ER doctor I trusted and went along with the story. I was completely engaged in what transpired in the hospital setting and on a personal level with Zadie and Emma.

I think fans of medical dramas like Grey’s Anatomy will enjoy The Queen of Hearts. I look forward to Kimmery Martin’s next novel. *review galley provided by the publisher and NetGalley.

Zadie and Emma have a friendship that has stood the test of time. They went to medical school together, endured the highs and lows of dating, and are now juggling the demands of a family as neighbors in North Carolina. Their lives and careers were pretty uneventful until a colleague nicknamed, Dr. X joined their staff.

Neither Zadie or Emma are happy with Dr. X’s arrival because each is keeping secrets from the past. Zadie had a romance with Dr. X but kept it discreet since he was the chief resident. Emma has her own misgivings because she has kept secrets from Zadie that may be unveiled. Dr. X’s presence threatens to destroy their longstanding friendship.

This is a debut novel by Kimmery Martin, who was able to draw on her experience as a doctor. I enjoyed this book which explores the relationship between two women via their life experiences. From this book, I also learned a new expression for an Ace Wrap!

I absolutely loved this book, what a wonderful read especially for a first time author!!! I have trained in different countries and America is the only place I have come across CRNAs so I’m not sure what the person who left this comment means. “Knowing that you trained at CMC I am shocked that you never acknowledge that CRNAs are the ones at the head of the bed doing your anesthetics. Shame on you.”
How ridiculous to put something so personal in the review of a book that’s about doctors. I must leave a review for Steven King and complain that he doesn’t put enough Irish characters in his books ?

Greys Anatomy, The Resident, The Good Doctor…..and now the Queen of Hearts! I love all hospital and medical shows on television, and this book was a perfect tie-in to feed my addiction. There are no other books or storylines with two female doctors as the main characters, and I absolutely loved the back and forth perspectives between them and in time.
The development of Zadie and Emma through medical school sucked me in from the start. The trials and learnings of the long work days, medical errors, and loss of patients and friends filled out the backstory, and the current day storyline was even better.
I wanted the story to continue a couple more chapters to elaborate on the ending a bit more, but it was a satisfying closing to a great book. If you love medical dramas, definitely give this one a try!

Sharp, funny, and poignant by turns, Martin's debut is a medical drama with -- dare I say it? -- real heart. I appreciated that the primary relationship in the book is the friendship between Zadie and Emma, not any of their romantic relationships. It's a rare thing for a book to foreground friendship, particularly when romance is also on the table, and I think Martin makes a wise choice with her POV characters. Martin also has an excellent ear for dialogue. Her characters speak in ways that feel very real -- so much so that some of the hospital incidents are surely taken straight from real life, or taken with very little modification, based on Martin's own experiences as a doctor.

Queen of Hearts is a story of friendship through the years told within the borders of med school, intern rotation, and hospital corridors where secrets, lies, and forgiveness reign supreme.

I especially identified with Zadie—the at-times overburdened and always late Mom. It’s taken me over thirty years since having kids to attain punctuality again, and then, not always.

Emma, at times was a bit harder to pin down, but because Zadie loved her so much, I knew she was worth getting to know. And I was glad I did.

Shout out to Delaney—the most charming and lovable preschooler ever. I loved every scene with her in it.

If you enjoy medical dramas like Grey’s Anatomy or ER, this book should be right up your alley.

The storyline definitely had some twists to it! I really enjoyed the alternating narrators; that's always a favorite of mine. There were a few times in the deep pages of the text that I did go into skim-mode, not because I was bored, no sir, but rather because it got a tad bit wordy and I just HAD to know what was going to happen...get on with it! Lol. Then I would go back and read more closely that which I had skimmed.

And until I looked online for a bit more about the author, Kimmery Martin, I was unaware this was her debut novel! Extra points for that! Beautiful cover art too!

Fans of Liane Moriarty and Celeste Ng will consume this tale of lifelong friendship, secrets, love and loss. Set against the backdrop of the beautiful south, Zadie and Emma, two married-with-children successful doctors who've been friends since high school, are shaken by the news that Nick, aka Dr. X, a man from their past, is joining the staff of their hospital. Through alternating points-of-view and flash backs to their residency, their shared history and the reasons for their apprehension are slowly revealed. This page-turner, filled with touching and funny side-stories of both a medical and parenting nature, will make you both laugh and cry. A great book club pick!

4.5 stars! This book is a rollercoaster of emotions. I experienced everything from joy, dismay, relief, anger, delight, and more while reading The Queen of Hearts. The characters are all dynamic and so real, as is the drama. All of the medical bits are fascinating to me - I can almost picture this entire book as a long, sweeping season of Grey’s Anatomy (this is a good thing!) My favorite character is definitely Delaney - she, and her saying, are so unique and delightful.

Kimmery Martin writes a brilliant story of Zadie and Emma. They are best friends and this story follows them in their residency and after school. Suddenly secrets that were so deeply hidden starts to surface and tests the friendship. Can Zadie and Emma's friendship make it in the end?

Sharp, funny, and charming, THE QUEEN OF HEARTS is everything that I wanted and more! Zadie and Emma are the kinds of characters we can immediately fall in love with, flaws and all, and I love how their friendship shapes this story. The climax is TRULY harrowing, and I found myself unable to put this book down.

I've got to say, the best part of this book, for me, was the effortless way Martin managed to weave medicine into the background. This has just about all the blood and guts and medical jargon a doctor wannabe like me could ever ask for. Not to mention the great turns of phrase and gorgeous sentences that litter this book!

I loved the well-developed characters (who could resist delicious little Delaney), snarky humor (like your friend who actually says the awful things you’re thinking), and super intelligent context (I won’t soon forget the Trauma Room). This book is unique, but has hints of Lisa Gardner and Mary Kay Andrews. Look out, a Trauma Queen is born! When is the NEXT book coming??!!

Fabulous and entertaining, so much so that I have the ebook and the hardcover signed by the Author. I really enjoyed the medical setting because I'm a medical junky. My favorite part of this enjoyable read, is that in the end Zadie valued her friendship with Emma enough to realize quickly that she could forgive Emma. In addition to that I was amused that neither Zadie nor Emma ended up keeping the irresistible Dr X in their life. A win win for them. `

I positively fell into this book, from the charming, relatable characters to the dishy drama. I happened on a sample chapter, then found a review copy on Netgalley. Since I don't typically read on my phone, it took me longer than it otherwise would have to complete but once I dug back in on a road trip I finished it in two days. It's hard to describe the connection I felt to these characters despite not being in medicine, not having any common guideposts. I always wanted to know more about them and was shocked by the bewildering twists and turns as the drama escalated. This was a great vacation read, would be terrific for a plane, the beach or just in the bath tub or bed. The most engrossing "chick lit" type novel I've read in a while.

I ended up loving this book. Having close friends who become sisters and facing betrayals are subjects close to my heart, but I have to admit, it took me a little while to get into this one. I think hearing from both friends was really important but I wanted to get to know the betrayed friend, Zadie, a little better before weighing in Emma's views. Truthfully, the bouncing-back-and-forth chapters and the medical details almost put me off. REALLY glad I stuck with this one: in the end Emma and Zadie became my friends too and the ending left me satisfied.

I loved this book! It is Kimmery Martin’s debut novel but is the work of a master author. A page turner from the beginning. Ms. Martin’s lead characters are so fully developed, it seems as if they are actual people... and could become my friends! Too wordy. Main character, Zadie seemed to be really stuck on herself. (example-being beautiful all the time). Jumped from past to present and hard to keep up with. Easy to figure out the ending. Makes me doubt the medical profession if I paid attention to what happened in this book. I know better than that. Hope Ms Martin don't quit her day job and become a novelist. The worse thing about it was her trying to describe surroundings when it was way too descriptive to add to the novel-only took away from it. Maybe she'll improve if she writes more, but I really doubt it.

Unfortunately, this book was not a winner for me. It was so bogged down in the medical jargon that the whole story line seemed to get lost. While I do admire the dedication, the work, and the years it takes to get to become a doctor, I found that this book seemed to make that experience more of a soap opera. I am sure romance and sex play a portion of the medical school and internship experience, however, I do think that it plays a very small part.

Zadie and Emma do have a wonderful friendship that is established and I am pretty sure that if the author followed that line better this book overall would have been a much more satisfying read. The character I thought was quite wonderful was the three year old, Delaney. Too bad the book could not have been about her.

So sorry to say, this was not the book for me. It seemed shallow and lacking but I do realize that this was the author's fist novel so perhaps her next will be better.
