I read this book for a Young Adult literature class that I was in. I had struggled through the book, finding it very boring. So for a class project that I did on Rick Riordan, I decided to compare the book to this graphic novel. I found this graphic novel to be much interesting! The writing in the book was too simplistic and boring for me, but the graphic novel helped the story to move along faster, and it was interesting to compare the two formats. I would recommend this for struggling readers or students who just don't like to read. It's a wonderful story about a young boy overcoming obstacles - both natural (Dyslexia, ADHD, etc) and unnatural (Gods and Goddesses).

I enjoyed this graphic novel version but it will be a while before I let my son read it. Also many parts from the book were cut and some added depth and background for the series. Not sure how much I'd understand if I hadn't read the book first.

When I first ordered thie graphic novel I wasn't expecting much. I was only really interested in seeing how artist potrayed the characters. It was well done Percy Jackson fans will not be dissapointed. I have collected comics throughout my teen and young adult age so if yoou ask me would I have preffered different artists, one that I have been more familiar with I wouold tell you yes, but for what it's worth I was not dissapointed. You will enjoy the Graphic Novel and you'll appreciate how the characters came to art and the way it was directed. Good job team.

Well drawn book with lots of movement and adventure. Would recommend it as a 4-star because the drawings are not exactly like the movie; lots of differences. (this is my son's language - his review!)

I bought this for my 9 yr. old grandson, in hopes of getting him to read a book this summer instead of playing video games all the time. He really liked it and wants to read the others in the series. (He's still playing video games though!)

I found this good and all, however it left out a few parts that, in my option were a bit important. I do realize that turning the book into a graphic novel not everything can be kept. Overall it was good

It was okay. I liked it but it did leave something to be desired. The art work was okay but some points it seemed messy and not all that thought out. There were some parts from the book left out that I would have liked to see like the battle scene on the bus and Medusa.

My 10 yr old has read all the Rick Riordan books, several times over. He can't get enough mythology. He began reading right away after he opened it for christmas instead of opening what was left. I like that it is hard cover; soft covers get "loved too much" in our house.

I loved the graphic novel. The only problem I had with it was that the guy skipped some of the best parts. The part with the the three furies was one that really wanted to see in the novel, but oh well. Other than that i loved it.

ok book, from a parent's perspective. It does keep the reader's attention and it's entertaining.

The storytelling is not the best, I didn't like the dark visuals, and the flow across the pages is not always clear. As a parent (who enjoys graphic novels), i give it three stars.

But my teen son Loves it. Five stars from him.

Vocabulary a little advanced for early elementary school. I thought my granddaughter would like the part about the gods, but it's more like the names were appropriated for the authors characters, and the result was "gods" who were unrecognizable. Not faulting the author's poetic license here.

I needed a replacement novel so I ordered what I thought was a complete book. Instead I got a comic book of Lightening Thief. I'm not very happy about this misconception. There was no where in the description that let me know that the book was a comic book.

The book it's self is nice but it wasn't what I thought it was. This is like a comic book, no words really...all pictures and doesn't remind me of the movie at all, depending on the cost to ship back will determine if it's even worth sending back.

Will Perseus Jackson, son of Poseidon be able to return the Master Bolt to Zeus before the Summer Solstice?!
Perseus Jackson has seen some strange things growing up. Now he knows why. He is a Half – Blood. Epic battles with a Minotaur, Medusa, Ares, and Hades await him! Percy, Annabeth, and Grover travel across the world to take the Master Bolt from Hades and return it to Zeus before it’s too late. Percy Jackson the Lightning Thief is Fabulous writing by Rick Riordan. This book has a nice mix of Fantasy/Greek Mythology, with a nice touch of modern travel and setting. This book is action packed, creative, and just strait up awesome! I would recommend this book for ages 9+.
Twelve year – old Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of middle school … again. No matter how hard he tries, he can’t seem to stay out of trouble. But can he really be expected to stand by and watch while a bully picks on his scrawny best friend? Or not defend himself from his pre – algebra teacher when she turns into a monster and tries to kill him? This part of the book has epic, in – depth action, and I love epic, in – depth action. You have to wait a couple chapters for the action. There is only one action scene in the beginning of the book.
Now, a Minotaur is chasing Percy to summer camp. Can things get much worse? Suddenly, creatures seem to be walking strait out of Percy’s Greek Mythology textbook and into his life. He’s coming to realize that the Gods of Mount Olympus are very much real and alive in the 21st century. There was a little bit of action in this part of the book. There wasn’t very much action in this part of the book.
Percy, Grover, and Annabeth travel across Los Angeles to get to the Underworld. They face multiple challenges, but manage to make it to the Underworld. Meanwhile, Percy’s mom is stuck in the Underworld with Hades and his terrifying pet. Will they be able to save Percy’s mom, return the Master Bolt, and remain alive? The theme of this book is: Teamwork always prevails. One of the weaknesses of this book is: For younger readers this book may not be interesting because it is so long. I challenge you to go and check this book out from your local library and possibly even buy it from the store.

Eh, this wasn't quite the graphic novel of Percy Jackson I was looking for. I just thought they would look...not all oddly and like they're in their 20's?

I think the biggest issue that I had with this graphic novel was the art. At times, it had some super cool scenes. I especially enjoyed Percy's dream sequences because the artist took some cool forms of media to create them. There were other scenes that I really enjoyed too, and I liked Percy's look for the most part. However, the rest of the art was a bit sketchy - especially when it came to Annabeth, Luke, and Clarisse. CLARISSE. Can we just talk about that? That was not at all what I had in my head, and she basically looked like someone took Ares and put a brown wig on her. It was not pleasing. Annabeth didn't look quite well done at all, and Luke seriously looked like he was going into his 30's. It got a bit sketchy. Although Ares literally jumped out of my head and onto the page.

For the most part, they translated the story nicely. They did take out quite a few important scenes and moments, but I do understand that they did need to take out a few things since it is such a large book. However, some of the things they did take it out were some great parts, so if this wasn't your first time reading the story, you will feel like you're missing something that you had loved. However, if this was your first time reading and it was in this format, I think they did a good enough job relaying the most important things and giving enough backstory.

Overall, I thought it was a good adaption, but I definitely expected more from it. I think it did take a lot of the important parts, but it did miss quite a bit of the spunk that Percy had. The pacing was okay, but at times, it did feel like you were reading Percy Jackson but just on speed. The art wasn't super great but at times it did have cool moments. 3 crowns and a Belle rating!

In the book, the first five chapters of Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief doesn't have a lot of action and I think some people find it hard to get past. Once Percy makes it to camp, I believe that people would be much more likely to enjoy the book as the pacing is better and there is more action. Being a graphic novel, this iteration of the story shortens that initial pacing issue and might make the story accessible to more people. I felt that the storyline in the graphic novel followed the book faithfully and didn't rush through the important moments.

Being a graphic novel, the story doesn't have as much time to develop as a regular book. As a result, I don't feel that you get to know the characters as well as you should. My hope though is that this graphic novel will inspire people to read the actual book and experience the original. That being said, if you've already read the book(s) then I think you will still enjoy the graphic novels.

My one issue with the graphic novel is the illustrations because not only are they not consistent but a lot of them don't look like their characters. The main characters are in middle school when we meet them and yet they're drawn as if they're in their late teens and sometimes early 20's. It's difficult to ignore that fact when you're reading a graphic novel.

Before reading this graphic novel, I read the original Percy Jackson book by Rick Riordan. That book was amazing! The world building was awesome, the characters each had their own personality, and even though I'm an adult I really enjoyed it. This graphic novel did NOT do it justice. Percy (and pretty much every character) looked way older that what they were supposed to be and honestly they looked a little bit ugly. I hate to judge art as I myself can't draw, but for my own personal taste this was pretty bad. The dialogue seemed off. They choose random lines, which I'm guessing they deemed the funniest from the book, but for me translated to them trying too hard to be funny. However, I did enjoy this book, but I don't think I would have finished it if I had not read the actual book first. I plan to continue the series.
I would highly recommend reading the book series first, or at least the book that the graphic novel is adapted from. It will make the graphic novel better. Also, the store sent the book in a timely manner!

I know that graphic novels are not supposed to be exactly like the book, but this book was too much NOT like the real story!
My daughter is a huge Percy Jackson fan, and has been reading the series since 3rd grade, and is in 6th now. She wanted to try the comic version, but after felt that she liked the original better.
She said there were too many cuts and changes from the real version. For instance, remember Medusa? She wasn't even mentioned! And when Percy and Annabeth were in the "tunnel of love" trap? Not there either! Neither was the exploding bus, Crusty's waterbeds, or Cerberus! The graphic novel was also too fast paced for her taste. For example, we only met Gabe for less than a page, and never saw him again.
On the bright side, the illustrations were great! They matched the descriptions in the original Lightning Thief and all the basic characters were included in the story. If you like the details, I don't recommend this. But if you don't mind a few skipped scenes or a faster pace, this novel is for you!

I have always thought that graphic novels adaptations were the best way to get into graphic novels. Unfortunately, this graphic novel adaptation does not do the original novel justice.

For me, the main reason why I did not enjoy this adaptation is that it does not capture any of the things that I love about Percy Jackson and his world. Both the art style and the wording used (even though the words were taken straight from the book) were unable to capture the little quirks that make Percy great.

The art style chosen just was not nice in all honesty. I know that Percy Jackson is a middle grade book series, but does that really mean you have to draw the adaptation like a middle grader drew it? I have seen plenty of comic books aimed at younger audiences with amazing artwork.

I am in love with the Percy Jackson series, so when I had the chance to read the graphic novel version of the first book, I took it as quickly as I could. Though I wasn't expecting to read anything new or find out something different about the series, it was definitely worth reading to see my favorite scenes played out like a comic.

What I thought was really cool about reading this, after picturing Camp Half-Blood in my head so many times, was seeing the layout drawn in each different frame. The rock climbing wall with lava, the Big House, the cabins . . . I loved being able to see everything, not just on a map, but put out the way they were supposed to be.

The characters, on the other hand . . . Well, nothing-no actor or image-can ever compare to the person a reader conjures in their mind. But I found the illustrations lacking in this point, simply because some of the frames had them with particularly goofy expressions, or little things like that . . . And not during the moments that are supposed to be comical. It was more of a slight distraction that anything, but one that I noticed.

All in all, I'd recommend this to Percy Jackson fans. It's something I'd borrow rather than purchase, though. Nothing new here, just a neat way to view things. For those who haven't picked up the books, I really recommend reading them first before checking this out. The original Lightning Thief has so much more detail-and funny moments!

Just saying, the drawings are horrible and it left out some pretty important details so I really recommend that you read the original instead. I seriously was shocked. How could a Rick Riordan book be so ruined? I seriously regret ever reading it. I wish that I never did because now, "The Lightning Thief" is just ruined for me. I really don't recommend this book but if you feel like you must read it, then borrow it from your local library, do NOT ever buy this junk.

This is a very interesting book since the autor has found an inspiration in a subject that is familiar in many ways with many people in the western world. He is using a sort of existing superheroes without fear of copyright, since they were created thousands of years ago in Greece and adjacent territories.

However, it started with the ancient romans who borrowed most of its gods from Greece, and changed their names, but not their characteristics and attributes. "The Lightning thief" shows a deep knowledge of Greek mythology and adapted it to the US.

One critical aspect of the book is that a good part of it is violent, including a head decapitation. It may be a reflection of our society or world and its constant wars. It fits also in the violent environment of video games where killing is normal. Is the book going backwards in time? What have we learned in more than 2000 years?

It is also ethnocentric since it states that the gods have chosen this part of the world, since the action is here. (What about the rest of the world?).

Earthly American things like shoes, baseball cups, hamburgers and the Empire State help make you feel at home with the characters in spite of their demigod or gods status. I know there are more books about PJ, but I' m not sure I' ll read them because of the violence of the first one. But I want to re-read the Iliad and the Odyssey now that I know more about Greek gods thanks to PJ. By the way, these classics should be read by everybody and specially all students since they are an important part of our culture.

This is the first in the graphic novel series retelling the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Riordan. This graphic novel was well-illustrated and did a good job telling the story; the story is darker in tone though and had less humor in it than the books.

Anyone who is a fan of Riordan's works knows the story already. Percy Jackson finds out that he is a half-godling and gets blamed for the theft of Zues's lightening bolt. Then he and some of his new friends from Camp Half Blood set out on a quest to find the lightening blot and clear Percy's name.

The illustration was well done and matched the tone of the story. It is in full color and represents the characters well, the only character that was a lot different from the series is Grover...he is not pictured at all how I imagined and doesn't need his crutches to get around. Although it was well done there isn't anything really stylistically or artistically unique or compelling about the illustration.

The story hits most of the main story points; although there wasn't as much humor present as in the book series. Percy is a bit more brooding and the atmosphere is darker. In general it is a good translation of Percy and the Olympians to a comic-book like style.

Overall I enjoyed reading this to relive the series; I didn't find anything especially compelling about either the illustration or the story itself. The illustration is well-done but a bit darker; the story is also darker and less humorous than originally. The author/illustrators did a good job of converting this story to something that has a more comic book feel to it. I will probably read future installments just because I like the series so much. I would recommend reading the original books first because they are just hands down better, but this graphic novel does a great job of representing the series and helping readers to relive it. For those who are interesting in middle grade level graphic novel I have to recommend The Stonekeeper (Amulet, Book 1) series by Kazu Kibuishi and Bone: The Complete Cartoon Epic in One Volume (Vol 1) by Jeff Smith...both of these are absolutely spectacular.

I think this book stands alone as a graphic novel well. However, it is an abridged version of a much loner novel and thus omits quite a bit if you're comparing. My son likes series books but doesn't like reading them one after another; he read the first 3 Percy Jackson books two years ago. He wanted to pick-up again with book 4 recently but didn't really remember what was happening. The graphic novel was something he could read very quickly to get him up to speed - a much better option than starting over.

Having read the entire series as a whole years ago, I already knew what I was getting into beofre starting this graphic novel version of the story.

And even though it is obvious going into the story that you won't be getting the completely story, the beautiful illustrations more than made up for the lack of info.

Beautifully drawn and a whole lot of fun. I would say my first foray into the graphic novel world was a huge success and now I want more. I will definitely be continuing the series (again) through these novels. So much fun!

My favorite part in the book is when Percy fights ares an hits his leg an then he disappeared into golden air.Why is it my favorite because you think you only once not twice. What would be wroth remembering when Percy get's to see his dad for the first time ever and his uncles one more moment get's to see his mom do you know why it's so special because he love his mom never wont's
her to go where. The author choose Percy to be narrate because lot's of thing happen to him that doesn't happen to anyone else.
One part I would change is doesn't tell us he has powers you got to find out.I would've change it to Hades or his father would have told him. Some character traits I would say is Percy have are nice, trustworthy, good friend and fight.Percy is trustworthy because didn't steal the lightning bolt and Hades helm. Also Percy went to the underworld but didn't save his mom because he didn't want to abandon his friends and quest.

Percy Jackson is a 12 year-old boy who has been diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. He has always had a hard time in school. His mother has had to transfer him to many different schools because he always gets in trouble. His latest school, Yancy Academy, is on a field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art when suddenly his teacher turns into a monster and attacks Percy. He is unsure if anyone else sees this happen. He discovers that his teacher is one of the furies and is trying to kill him. His mother grows concerned and takes him away for the weekend. His best friend, Grover who turns out to be a Satyr that has been watching over him, appears and tells him he's in danger. Percy's mother takes them both to Camp Half-Blood, a camp for demigods. Demigods are the children of Gods/Goddesses and mortals. This is the only place he will be safe. Before they get to the camp a Minotaur begins chasing them. His mother is not able to cross the gates into the camp, so the Minotaur grabs her and she disintegrates into gold dust. Percy is devastated and unsure whether he will ever see her again.

Percy does not know which god his father is so he is placed in the cabin of Hermes until his father reveals his symbol to Percy. During a training game, Poseidon reveals his symbol to Percy. He is the only child of Poseidon's at the camp. There is fighting in Olympus over a stolen lightning bolt that belongs to Zeus. Zeus believes that Poseidon has stolen the bolt through Percy. Percy sets off on an adventure with Grover and Annabeth to find the bolt, which his mentor Chiron believes is in the Underworld. The three of them encounter many things. They fight Medusa, the Furies, and Ares while making their way to Hades. But will they get there in time? They only have 10 days to complete this journey and return the bolt to Zeus.

This is a fun book filled with action, adventure, and Greek Mythology. I enjoyed every page. These are similar to Harry Potter, but Greek Mythology versus wizards. I personally prefer these to the Potter series. The author initially started the story of Percy Jackson for his son, who was also diagnosed with ADHA and dyslexia. The stories were his bedtime stories. I think it is touching that this was developed between a father and son. I can imagine the two tweaking the story each night. I can't wait to see where the rest of the series takes me!

Do you like action, suspense, mythical creatures, and Gods? If so you should try reading Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. This book was written by Rick Riordan and there are about 9 after this book so far. These books are about a boy who has dyslexia and it turns out he can only read Ancient Greek and is a son of a God. He is what they call a Demi-god. A Demi-god is very rare but there are several scattered around in different places in the world. Percy is a very rare demigod because he is related to one of the most famous of the gods, Poseidon. The first book of the series starts his outstanding journeys to save Mount Olympus. I was so glued to this book, all I could do was read more and more about Percy and his adventures. An example of his first quest was finding Zeus' lightning bolt which had been stolen. The reason Percy had to find it is because Zeus accused him for stealing the bolt and if he does not return it in 3 weeks, Zeus will fight Poseidon, Percy's father and cause major storms, tornadoes, and tsunamis. I recommend this book for Greek mythology-loving readers from 6-13 years old. If I had to rate this book, I would rate it 5 stars.

I saw the movie first, then read the book, and now the graphic novel! If that doesn't give you a hint, well, I totally love this series!! :D Greek mythology in general, I should say.

This graphic novel followed the book pretty closely, more so than the movie. If you haven't read or seen either, well, it is about Percy Jackson finding out that he is a demigod (son of Poseidon) and he is being accused of stealing Zeus's master lightning bolt. But of course he didn't do it.

I really liked the graphic novel. We all know that movies can't fit every single detail from the book, but it nice to see a visual when you're reading. For example, the part when they are in this monument and Percy gets cornered by this lady and her dog that turns out to be not a dog but some ugly monster thing. That was pretty cool.

I thought some of the characters were kinda funny looking though; some of the girls looked like guys *cough* Clarisse *cough* lol.

But overall it was pretty entertaining. I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Greek mythology and/or the Percy Jackson series.

The print quality of the copy I received was terrible. The illustrations on many pages were poorly printed and blurry. The art work depicts characters who look too adult. They're supposed to be 6th graders. This is also a very condensed adaptation of the novel. I think the audio book or movie would be a better introduction for anyone who's not sure they're ready to read the books.

My elementary school librarian started reading the Lightning Thief for my class in the 5th grade, but she switched to another book after chapter 2. I promised myself to read it, but two years went by, and I didn't pick it up. I'm now in 7th grade and in about early November, I found a copy of the Lightning Thief in my English class, so I borrowed it and thought I might as well start reading. I was addicted to it. I read it in two nights, it was that good. It was like a drug. You want to stop, but you're body is angling for another dose of it until it can finally settle down (not that I know about this firsthand mind you). I also really liked this book because it explained about the Greek myths, and I've always loved those stories ever since I was small. Rick Riordan knows how to write, and this book is proof of it. I know have finished the Olympian series and I'm moving on to the next one. Stop what you're doing now and get this book because you'll have an adevnture worthy of the Gods.

The Book The Lightning Thief By Rick Riordan is an Action packed and adventure filled story of the search of a young boy who is desperately trying to find out his origins and discover his mysterious powers. I would recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys a book so in depth of greek gods and mythical monsters and not just the battle between them but a seemingly real possibility about how earth may have came to be. Lastly it truly exemplifies the meaning of hardship with what Percy must go through to accomplish his quest, fulfill his prophecy and discover who he really is while meeting some of the coolest and craziest of friends along the way. It is truly the awesomeness of Percy Jackson finding out what it really means to be the son of one of the three most powerful gods to have ever lived that makes this book amazing.

I am already a huge fan of the Percy Jackson series and many of my students love the books as well. I picked up the graphic version to appeal to some of my more reluctant readers.

Most of the major story elements are included; Percy learns he is a demigod and that his best friend is a satyr after being attacked by Mrs. Dodds, meets other demigods at Camp Half-Blood, and sets out on a quest to return a very important stolen item. However, the final product seems a bit rushed and there are some strange gaps that make the story hard to follow. My favorite part of the novel, the encounter with Medusa, is completely left out.

I might recommend this book for Percy's fans, as there are some nicely done graphics, but those new to the story would be much better off sticking to the original, no pictures version. 2.5 stars would reflect my opinion more accurately.

This was a great translation of Rick Riordan's story! The action was captured very well with vivid artwork and great character portrayals. I definitely want to read the rest of the series to see what else that the creators have done with this modern classic. Perfect for reluctant readers and a possible gateway to reading the standard book series. Excellent!

Reason for Reading: This was a Cybils '10 nominee and I've just now been able to get a copy to read.

This is a graphic adaptation of the novel of the same name and even though this is the first in the series I think it will be most enjoyed by those who have read the book. As a standalone, without knowledge of the book, the graphic novel isn't really that exciting of a story. It's been some years since I read the book and this is the only one in the series I've read, and I haven't seen the movie, so my mind wasn't fresh on the events but I do remember more happening that what happened in the graphic novel. For example, I specifically remembered a scene in the book with Medusa, which never occurred in this adaptation. It felt like explanations were missing and gaps were left in the flow of the story. I'm not that crazy with the artwork either; the faces have unnatural expressions. Overall, it's still the same story, so not a bad read, but I'm not overly impressed with this graphic adaptation.

I'm pretty sure hat everyone can imagine what it's like to have dislexia, but to be son of a powerful god like Poseidon, god of the sea. Now thats unthinkable to be son of a god like poseidon. Now percy in and out of six privite schools, but Percy is now out of school now that it is summer he can go spend time with his mom at the local lake, But all that fun comes to an end. Shortly after a terrble storm starts they get a visted from Percy's only friend grover. After being attacked by a half man and half bull thing. Then after that Percy needs to get camp half-blood because thats the only safe place from monsters, now knowing that he is son of Poseidon. After learning that Zeus' famous lighting bolt has been stolen. Percy, grover, and annabeth now must make a risky quest to return Zeus'lighting bolt. After being betrayed be Aers god of war that it was him all along that took the bolt

I'm a huge Percy Jackson fan and when I found out there were graphic novels, I was really excited, because I had been so disappointed in the movie adaptation. I was pleasantly surprised by this first installment. The artwork was beautiful (though the characters didn't look their ages) and it followed the novel pretty faithfully, but I had a few problems with the adaptation.

I thought the pacing was too fast (they skipped the coolest fight in the book too) and overall it was a little shallow. The characters and their relationships were underdeveloped. At first it didn't bother me, but I have a hard time believing Percy's friendships with Annabeth and Grover. However I thought the graphic novel handled Luke's character far better than expected. They made him at least somewhat relatable, but my thoughts on their portrayal of Luke were much more negative as I read the second installment. Overall, I think the first graphic novel is fine.

This book is pretty cool for one written by a 41-year old man. Despite his age he can capture the personality of the brainless, immature turd that all guys remember being in 6th grade, and many other characters as well. Plus, if you're into Greek mythology, that's pretty much everything in the book. This is the kind of series you can be a nerd about, like Harry Potter. I don't want to make this book less interesting for you so I won't spoil anything.

The following is a guest review of a Rick Riordan book by my most wonderful grandson, Kai Ohlarik:

This book is mainly about Zeus's lightning bolt being stolen. He was sleeping one night when somebody stole his bolt, and Percy Jackson is on a quest to find it. Percy was forbidden to be born because his powers would be too powerful. His father was Poseidon and he was born with his father's power.

Percy, on his quest, finds himself battling many monsters, such as Medusa. She was disguised as a statue maker. Percy gets into trouble with Ares, the God of War. Percy fights Procrustes, known as Crusty, disguised as a water bed salesman. In reality, all the beds were stretchers.

Annabeth helps Percy on his quest. She is very smart and a quick thinker. She is the daughter of Athena. Grover is a satyr, one-half goat and one-half human. Grover helps on the quest. Satyrs try to hunt down sons and daughters of the Gods all around the world. When they find them, they bring them to a special camp called Camp Half-Blood.

This is a really, really good book. What I liked was the Gods and the battles, and the ironic ending. I would definitely recommend this book to everybody that is looking for an action packed book.

Having seen the movie but not read the novel, I'm not sure if this straightforward adaptation fails to impress because it doesn't match the energy of the movie or because the novel just isn't very good. (My 10 year-old son loved both so I'm guessing it's the former.) Venditti does a competent job of condensing the story into 128 pages, but the whole thing plods along, never making any real emotional connections to the characters or events taking place. Attila Futaki's artwork is solid, smartly grounding the fantastic tale firmly in the real world, but it would have been a good idea to give him and Venditti an extra 20 or so pages to let them decompress the story and deliver some dramatic splash pages for key scenes.

Percy Jackson is twelve years old, has been kicked out of every school he's ever gone to, and is seen as quite a troublemaker. With ADHD and dyslexia and a reputation for trouble following him wherever he goes, Percy has learned to not get too attached to any one school, set of friends, or teachers, for that matter.

Yancey Academy has been no different, except for two things. His best friend, Grover, and his Latin teacher, Mr. Brunner, seem to really care about him. While on a school field trip, Percy has quite the bad day. He almost drowns Nancy Bobofit, the school bully; gets attacked by Mrs. Dodds, the math teacher; and then gets told by everyone that there never was a teacher named Mrs. Dodds at Yancey academy.

Confused and mistrusting of the two he had come to call friends, Percy grows distant and ends up getting kicked out of yet another school. After the last day, Percy and Grover get onto the city bus to go home. While there, Percy sees three old ladies cutting a piece of yarn. Grover freaks out and asks Percy to wait for him while he runs into a store. Percy ignores him and heads home.

Through a series of bad choices and a fight with a foul-tempered, monstrous beast, Percy's mom appears to be killed and the two boys end up at Camp Half-Blood. If monsters aren't enough to take in, Percy finds out his father is Poseidon, the god of the sea, and that his uncle, Zeus, is demanding that Percy return the master lightning bolt by Summer Solstice or he'll be destroyed and another World War will begin. His only hopes are Grover and a smart-aleck girl named Annabeth.

Can Percy find the master lighting bot and save everyone's skin, or will the gods start a war bigger than anything anyone has seen before?

A great graphic novel adaptation of the original THE LIGHTNING THIEF book. The illustrations are wonderful. The novel is fairly true to the original book; the plot remains intact and is, therefore, well-written. The characters are true to their natures and are well-developed. Readers who are fans of Rick Riordan, action-adventure, fantasy, graphic novels, and mythology will all enjoy THE LIGHTNING THIEF: THE GRAPHIC NOVEL.

Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series is by far one of the most enjoyable book series I have ever read. I don't even want to label it children's fiction or YA (as the books get progressively darker though not as much as Harry Potter). The use of mythology in a modern/contemporary setting reveals Riordan's mastery of humor, sharp wit, and commentary on history, evolution, and society. I will admit unabashedly that it actually tops Harry Potter in that the books are more streamlined, the plot clearer, the jokes funnier, the hero isn't burdened with so much self-doubt, darkness and funk. Percy carries his heroism, his gift and ultimately his burden with a lightness of spirit not evident in Harry Potter. Perhaps it's better that way so readers can differentiate between both boy heroes. The story hurtles along at a breakneck pace but Riordan is such a good writer that he manages to slow things down at just the right time with bits of wisdom about our past and present.

Highly recommended for all ages. I'm in my third decade of life and I enjoyed this series immensely. While the new Heroes of Olympus series also feat. Percy is just as enthralling, there is something special about meeting Percy for the first time in the Lightning Thief and the graphic novel version really brings him to life.

I was really excited about this, but then as I read it, it wasn’t as funny, action packed and it did not have certain parts of the story, like Medusa, Crusty and others. I would recommend this to people who have not read the book, as fans , like me, would not like it.

I love Rick Riordan's books, but this one really sucked. It skipped important events and details, the illustrations were had bad, and it was rushed. If you are considering purchasing the book, I highly recommend going with the original copy.

The "Lightning Thief" is a book about a boy named Percy who has trouble in school. Percy has a mean, vile step-dad who does not treat him or his mother well. After the school year ends, Percy and his mother want to get away from it all and go on a vacation to Long Island. They leave for the beach and the vacation goes fine until one stormy night when Percy's best friend, Grover, shows up at his cabin without human legs! Grover has goat hooves! Percy believes that it is all a dream and Grover tells Percy's mother that a monster is coming and Percy has to go to "camp". They drive away in the storm and eventually Percy and Grover make it to Camp Half-Blood even though Percy's mother is captured. Percy then gets knocked out and goes into a coma for three days. When he wakes up he learns that he is a demigod! And not just any demigod, but the son of Poseidon, who is one of the "big three gods". Percy is shown around camp by the daughter of Athena, Annabeth. Annabeth tells him of a war between his father and the king of the gods, Zeus. Zeus believes that Percy stole his master bolt. To clear both his and his father's names, he decides to go on an adventure-filled, dangerous quest with Annabeth and Grover. The rest you will have to find out when you read the book!

My favorite part in the book was the part where Percy gets attacked by the Echidna at the top of the St. Louis Arch. Percy gets caught up at the top of the Arch with the mother of all of the world's monsters (literally). They battle and even blow a hole in the top of the building! Percy knows he will lose the battle so he jumps out of the hole! He falls hundreds of feet to the river and just when he thinks he is going to die, he lightly lands in the water and sinks to the bottom. He realizes that his clothes are not wet and that he can breathe, because he is the Son of the Sea God. After getting over the shock of the fall, he swims to the surface, gets out, and pretends to flee the scene with the rest of the tourists.

I believe that kids will love this book because it is based on one of the most famous children's series ever! They are really good books and also very educational about Greek mythology. The other good thing about the comic book is that it gives accurate visual representations of the characters when compared to the movie that had a less accurate plot, deleted key parts, and had actors who looked nothing like the characters as they were described in the book! Also, anyone who loves a comic would like this book so it could encourage these kids to read the series.

Finally, it is a good way for kids to learn a lot while still enjoying themselves because there are pictures and it isn't as daunting to read as a chapter book can be to some kids. I believe that boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 13 would enjoy this book; but truthfully, anyone could read it. I even know adults who love this series.

I liked this book but didn't love it. Maybe I'm just too old? It was a fun and quick read.
I liked the main character a lot but wish the author would have developed the other characters a bit more (maybe in the other books?).
Otherwise, it was a pretty good book with a fun plot and a nice twist at the end.
I recommend this to those who enjoy kids adventure books-I also know many adults who love this series as well.

Wonderful story beginning a series of books incorporating the Greek gods and goddesses along with modern preteens who find not only their heritage as demigods, but strength and confidence in each other. I used this series in my 5th grade classrooms covering all reading learning objectives. The kids LOVED it!

This a great book! OK, I know other people have said this-it does reflect Harry Potter-but hat doesn't matter! It's still a great book! I read(and LOVED)this book so I read The Sea of Monsters, The Titan's Curse, The Battle Of the Labyrinth, The Last Olympian, and The Demigod Ultimate Survival Guide all of which are great books. I recommend this book to any mother/daughter book club out there. Happy Reading!

I think the novel, The Lightning Thief, is a great children's (or anyone's!) book. It is awesome because it has amazing characters that are funny and mostly demi-gods (half human and half god)! It is a mix of Greek Mythology and American action. If you think battling Medusa while trying to save Zeus' lightning bolt in order to save the universe is exciting then this is the book for you! The book is about a life or death quest by Percy, an average kid that feels alone and "troubled." Percy battles Greek monsters, learns his best friend is half goat, and finds his true character. He learns to be a hero. It's a great book for people who like adventures and a funny, brave, and loyal 12 year old kid.

The Lightning Thief in a graphic novel? Who would have thought of that? But
Percy Jackson did it again! Rick Riordan's graphic Novel of Percy Jackson and the Lightning thief is a one to buy. The artwork is amazing, the story flows, and its everything I thought it would be! But there is one little snag. They leave out little parts of the story or don't put in a lot of detail. But what else are you supposed to expect from a comic? If you are a Percy fan: get it.

I liked this book, but I probably wont again. I mean, for one, the book was too short, the pictures werent very accurate, and it was too based on the bolt. I am a huge fan of Rick, (Percy, whatever) but this book (comic, whatever), wasnt really all that good. ...... Actually, maby thats because i've read all of rick's books...... But i'm sorry but ive just got to say.... Meh.

Second in the Percy Jackson series is The Sea Of Monsters. Even though the first book was great, somehow Riordan made this book even better! It includes all of the same characters, but with a few more tossed in here and there. So grab your friends and your weapon of choice, because this book is one BIG adventure!

This is a very exciting book. You have a lot of clues in this book. And there's a lot of loyalty and friendship. There's a lot of wars and fighting. I think this book is very good because you can't put it away really. You can learn a lot from this book because it's about the Greek mythology.

It was ok...but no offense, they drew percy kind of ugly (and to think I had a crush on him...) Also, they mjssed out some parts and Annabeth is supposed to have CURLY hair not STARIGHT! They got it wrong in the movie nd they got it wrong here too. Im dissapointed

If you want an awesome, combat book, get this one! First Percy ends up at a school called Yancy Academy. Then, he goes home the next day. Then he goes on vacation, and while he's in the car, he sees his best friend Grover on the street running and they hear loud grunting noises. They get attacked by a minotaur. The minotaur squeezes the life out of his mom although she's not dead. He eventually gets to a camp called " Camp Half Blood!" Read the book to see what happens next!

I read the Lighting Thief in 8 grade to do a report on it. I thought this book was very good. I think the book is better than movie. Lighting Thief is better than Harry Potter books too. It is my own opinion about it , so you do not have to judge me. This book is an adventure . Percy is half mortal , half god. It was cool that he went to camp and his father built a house for him. This book made me stay up all night and I could not stop reading it. I recommend this book because this is a great story about a boy wanting to save his dad whom he never met. Also I recommend the movie if you have not seen it yet, but it is not in the movie theater. if you are wondering.

I have not yet purchased the book, but looking from the "look inside" feature from the store I was able to see that Chiron's (centaur) horse body is brown in the graphic novel instead of white (which was how he was described in the book). In the movie Chiron's horse body was brown so in this instance the graphic novel followed the movie. I hope the other characters (at least the colors of the body, hair, eyes, etc.) match the book descriptions. After all, why would we need a still visual reproduction of a motion picture? I will still purchase the graphic novel, but I am already slightly disappointed.

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief is a truly adventurous book. In the book, Percy learns that his dad is Posiedon, God of the sea and earthquakes. Until then, Percy finds out that his uncle, Zeus, King of the Gods' master thunderbolt has been stolen! Zeus suspects that Percy stole his thunderbolt. His friend Grover introduced a girl named Annabeth. Her mom is Athena, goddess of wisdom and battle. They fight together to reveal the "lightning thief". Who could the lightning thief be

First, I'd like the say that I'd expected it to be good. The cover is fairly drawn well to appeal my eyes. But what was inside the book was dirt.

The drawing was horrible. Roughly drawn and did not capture the image I was looking for any of the characters in it; not even Mr. D.

They skipped many "episodes" compared to the book. And mostly the important parts that lead to the climax.

A great graphic novel for example is Artemis Fowl, or the famous OEM Maximum Ride graphic novel series. This is nothing like I expected and it disappointed me greatly.

This book is the first of Rick Riordan's books that I read. I wanted to know what would happen in his next books so I kept buying them. In this one, Percy learns that his father is a god and that is mother was kidnapped by another god. He went to a camp for protection and to learn more about his powers as a demigod. It's an interesting story. It made me want to know more about different types of mythical stories.

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief has adventure, action, suspence and much more. This book is about what seems to be a normal teenage boy.
Zeus thinks that Percy stole the Master Bolt and he has to return to Zeus within 17 days (the summer solstice). On his way, Percy meets a few friends, like Medusa. I reccommend this book for any looking to read a great fantasy.

The story line was okay, but the characters seemed ten years older than they really were. The art was not what I visualized. Much of the story was left out or rushed. If you've never read the book, you would understand the basic story, but of course for details, read the BOOK.

the graphic novel was adequate, and it included many of the details that the film missed. The graphics were like a comic book, rather than a graphic novel. It reminded me of the old Spider Man comics I used to read when I was younger. But it was better than the film adaptation.

I was so excited when I saw this book and could not wait to read it. The more I read, the more regretful I got that I bought this. It skips many parts in the regular book like the part when Procrustes stretched Annabeth and Grover. Please don't waste your money.
