I enjoy this book, reread it recently after having been given it 10+ years ago by my grandfather. The second time around I found it boring and oversimplified. But still recommend for anyone who is young or new to investing.

Everyone, everyone should read this book. Should be mandatory reading for high schoolers. First read this in early 1980s; advice is updated but still pretty much the same. Has stood the test of time.

I really enjoyed this book, I found myself laughing out loud a few times, the author makes the whole managing your money, your life, doable from a down to earth perspective. I bought it for my husband for Christmas : ) and I've given it to people I care about.

I checked this book out at my library after reading an interview with Tobias in a financial magazine. I am in the accounting/finance profession and have read lots of investment books over the years. This is the best -- by far!

I promptly bought my own copy and have been reading and highlighting since. Tobias is a gifted writer with a knack for distilling complicated financial topics down to simple explanations and recommendations, without talking down to his readers. He steers people away from investments they should avoid (commodities, collections -- unless you're an "expert") and recognizes the time/reward trade-offs of financial and investment decision-making. I found his advice to not obsess over the differences in returns at most banks (pennies -- why bother?) and to not flog yourself if you forget to write down every last expense refreshing. He's succinct, funny, and disarmingly self-deprecating.

Tobias doesn't try to "dazzle with detail" -- the book is appropriately detailed to make the case for simplified, low-cost investing, but not so burdened by charts and graphs that you grow quickly disinterested. He shows great respect for his readers. I'm going to get this book for several young people in my life who are just starting out.

Should have been called investment for dummies. Good read - makes learning the subject easy. If you're going to start investing, this is a good start. Someone loaned me this book- they buy all the revisions. I decided to buy it myself and keep as a reference book.

This may not be the only guide an investor needs, but it is one of the best I have read. The rather conservative advice given was so good, in my opinion, that I bought a copy of the book for each of my grown children. My daughter commented that she was excited to read clear and easily understood explanations about financial terms and matters.

A better title for this book would be " The Only Really, Really Conservative Investment Guide You'll Ever Need." In the author's preface. Mr Tobias marvels how the world has changed since the original publication in 1978. The Guide has been updated frequently so that you will not find any outdated references. In fact, you will be referred to numerous websites in the course of the author's discussions.
Mr Tobias is an advocate of "minimal risk" which is to say he thinks the majority of us would be better off saving rather than trying to get rich by investing. Well there is nothing new about that and it is presented in a flippant and I thought condescending tone.
So the first half of the book is very conservative advice although why he advocates Timber as an investment is beyond me. I think the same argument could be made for soybeans or for sod.
The second half is an excellent primer on the stock market which I feel
is worth the price of the Guide alone. I would recommend this book for anyone looking for a basic investment guide with the understanding that it is not a get rich quick reference.

This book was a great read. Tobias makes a potentially dry subject very enjoyable to read about. He makes the point that if you don't have your finances in order (which he describes in detail what he means) that there's little point in investing. In doing so though, he devotes many many pages to ways to be "thrifty" (some might choose to say "cheapskate" instead). The tips about filling expensive vodka bottles with cheap vodka, or splitting viagra pills because you don't necessarily need the entire pill, seemed to be a drop out of place in a book that covers personal finance.

Was recommended to me by a friend. I hate financial reads and yet knew I needed some framework for all the bits of information I've collected over the years. This filled the bill, straight forward even though I know I will need to read a few more times to really digest it all. Plan to buy a copy for my children.

This really is a great book. It makes financial decision-making a lot easier to understand and implement. I'd recommend this book to everyone. When it says, "The Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need" it ain't lyin'.

The book teaches simple stuff how to be frugal and is it better to buy random crap or pay off your loan?

Just stuff that you wouldn't have think of but once stated you end up asking yourself, "It's simple why the hell I haven't thought of it?"

There are bunch of tips the books gives, including using mint.com which I have for a while now. I believe the author is nice and genuine in trying to help the reader be more responsible in investment and financially stable.

Overall, it's a good book to help yourself to be financially responsible.
