Great book!
Simple, unbiased, unpretentious.
Dr. Moody tells how he stumbled into the subject of what happens when you have a near-death experience. He is very experienced and modest on the matter, clearly without any intent to convert anyone to any religion or philosophy. It is evident his only objective is to pass on the knowledge and wisdom he has received.
He is the first one to criticize his own observations, opening space for different explanations and discussing logically why he has eliminated some hypothesis to the phenomenon.
After more than 25 years studying and lecturing on the matter, he is a great master to open our minds to such a taboo subject: what happens when we die? He cannot answer the question fully, but he can give us a clarifying view of how the after life begins.
It is a wonderful view as we just have a glimpse of this opening door.
Read it if you think it might be truth, read it if you think it might not be true, or read it if you have no idea if we indeed have a spiritual life.

Life After Life is a classic study and composite of "out-of-body", "near death" experiences. Dr. Moody, a medical doctor, became curious of "where patients were" when they experienced "clinical death" in settings such surgeries and accidents where medical personnel were able to resuccitate them and bring them "back to life". He had witnessed surgeries in which patients temporarily left their bodies. Life monitoring equipment indicated heartbeat, respiration, etc. ceased. The patient was "gone"! Some for only a few minutes, others much longer, yet with the help of electrical heart stimulators, respirators, and medical professionals, they eventually "returned". Life monitoring equipment activity responded. The patients survived! But where were they? With the permission of medical authorities, Dr. Moody conducted hundreds of independent interviews and collected a trove of information. He noticed certain common traits related throughout his study and developed a composite "out-of-body experience" that typlifies his findings. Read the book. It is fascinating.

This is, of course, the classic that triggered much public curiosity about what happens when we die. It is the foundation on which much of the scientific research into near-death experiences is built. Recommended for those who have little or no knowledge about the subject.

A wonderful qualitative study of the events that occur immediately upon death and afterwards. Dr. Moody ventured into a realm that most scientists and researchers are unwilling to travel due to their positivist biases. However, the similarities within these accounts taken from individuals of all walks of life appear to point to what most scientists are unwilling to admit to; and that is, life continues even after natural life ceases. To strengthen the validity of these accounts, this study was conducted between the '60s and '70s, long before internet fame spawned unreliable NDE accounts from dishonest persons; and no detailed books were yet written on the subject. Moody describes certain criteria for identifying an NDE as well; out of body experiences, traveling through a dark tunnel, being engulfed in a bright light, visiting relatives who died in the past, standing before a Light Being (God), feeling ultimate love and compassion from this Being, a life review, etc. For those interested in NDE accounts, I advise books that are research based such is this versus individual accounts. Moody I believe has paved the way for mankind to actually study the intangible through phenomenological research to which I am sure more unknown accounts will prove his case greater.

I read this book at the recommendation of a counselor and was glad I read it. At the time, I didn't realize Moody had so many other (more recent books). This one is a good introduction to his other works which I have subsequently ordered. A good and easy read offered on the store at a reasonable price.

This is an excellent, objective description and summary of many personal accounts of near-death experiences. It really made me think and the book acts as a springboard for investigating this subject through other reading. Dr. Moody does not claim to "prove" anything in his writings, but he does make a compelling argument for survival of the soul beyond bodily death. I highly recommend this short, easy-to-read book. Especially the first three chapters that describe the various stages of the near-death experience.

I recently pulled this book off the shelf to revisit it after several years. Reading it again made me realize just how much things have changed over time when it comes to the public's acceptance of the metaphysical. In 1975, it was fitting to approach these topics with great caution, because the default attitude was so skeptical and so likely to invite ridicule if not ruin a person's entire reputation.

Toward that end, Moody (originally a skeptic in his own right), approaches the topic of NDEs with the attitude that almost no one will believe what he is saying. He gives the personal accounts, not trying to convince anyone of anything, but definitely making broken-record statements throughout that he wouldn't blame anyone for rejecting all of it.

The fact that the book was written for such a highly skeptical audience made it tedious for me because I, myself, am already a believer. Still, I enjoyed the personal accounts and wished these were longer and more of them rather than so much of Moody's interjections.
