It was great reading. I was hooked after the first few pages. I could not put the book down until I finished reading it, because I needed to know what happened at the end of the story. The end was a surprise .

I absolutely loved this book. Even though the book had a lot of the strongly disliked n***** word in it, it still showed how hateful and hard those tests were for blacks. I honestly have to say that the end made me cry, but overall, it was one of the best books I have ever read.

Gripping account apparently from author's personal history. Riveting, disturbing: despicable treatment and blind prejudice toward blacks in contrast to the innocence of childhood struggles, family ties and great forbearance. May God reward their suffering and raise them up in honor.

This book tackles some serious topics -racism, segregation, poverty. It shouldn't be enjoyable. It shouldn't be funny. But it is. Mildred Taylor has brought to life full developed characters whose humor, bravery, spunk, and sheer determination turn the members of the Taylor family into your friends. I have used this book many times in middle school, and, honestly, I read on my own just because it is such a wonderful book. I'm always disappointed when I get to the end because I don't want to leave the Taylor family.

over all, this book was good, however I found the beginning slow with limited action. The ending was extraordinarily sad, but I feel that the vivid descriptions of setting, and characters made up for that.
