Continuing the story of Pern's deadly plague that began in the novel Moreta, Dragonlady of Pern, Nerilka, once the overlooked middle daughter, of a selfish and greedy Lord Holder, becomes the oldest living daughter. Unable to condone her fathers refusal to help the sick and dying, Nerilka abandons her family to become a drudge in the household of a neighboring Lord Holder. Here she helps to organize the relief efforts of this household, supports the daughter of the house and the Lord Holder himself through their grief, and earns the respect of the Lord Holder. The tenacity of Nerilka herself and the relationships that develop between Nerilka and two surviving members of this family form the nucleus of this novel.

This book is almost a extension of "Moreta Dragonlady of Pern".
In "Moreta Dragonlady of Pern" I first met Nerilka or Rill for short. "Nerilka's Story" is a slightly different novel, it is talks about a hold girl, a ordinary holder, not a dragonrider. Anne McCaffery really emphasize on how plain and physically unattractive Nerilka is. She never recieved many affections or attention. She decided to run away to start a new life. She ends up in Ruatha where she meets Lord Holder Alessan. As you might remember from the previous novel in the serious, Alessan is deeply in love with Moreta. This novel goes through the plague and how Alessan deals with Moreta's death.
I think that Alessan was really mean when he marries Nerilka when he doesn't realy love her. He says that as soon as Nerilka bears his child, he would kill himself. Nerilka is a really tough person because she goes through such a hard relationship with Alessan.
This novel is more of a subtle, not-so-moving plot. Yet it is a important part of the Pern series and it is worth reading. Think of it as a light read but it isn't a very romantic novel, so don't expect too much romantic parts.

The "world of Pern" series have been a family favorite for many years. Nerilka's tale is a marvelous addition in that it brings a touch more believability to the entire universe Miss McCaffrey has created. Told from a "commoner's" point of view, it gives all of us a closer look into the lifes of the majority of Pern's inhabitants...after all, how many people have any sort of real interaction with dragons and weyr-folks?

Anne McCaffrey is the quintessential writer of fantasy books pertaining to dragons. These books are always wonderful, well written, and perfectly characterized. All of her series are great but the ones that take place on Pern are the best of all.

Tells the common people's experiences during the Moreta's ride period. (the great plague) A total tear jerker, (as was moreta's ride). representative of some of McCaffrey's best writing. Strong female protagonist. Nice details about Pern's holder culture. Loved it!

The Pern series of books from Anne McCaffery are great. Better if you read them in order, (look online at her website for recommendations). This is futuristic science fiction, but if you liked Aregon, you would probably like this series too

I have enjoyed all of Anne McCaffrey's books, especially the crystal singer series, and although i did enjoy this book i found the style to be that of a childrens' book, the edition i had even had illistrations, how cute! I think Ms. McCaffrey may have been under pressure to produce more Dragonriders of Pern books and got this one out as quickly as possible. Good book to buy for your young relatives, nieces and daughters should be your target.

I am searching for an obscure science fiction trilogy that was illustrated by the same illustrator of Nerilkas story. When I saw these illustrations, it clicked in my memory. The only thing I remember about the trilogy is that some king was eaten by owls. Can anyone help?
