The book provides a dual-action way to learn with children. The photos and the explanations fit well together and there is enough depth for all ages. the book is well organized, material is presented in a logical manner.

Boy, this book is heavy (and they say knowledge is weightless)! I would have liked to give Universe (revised edition 2012) four and a half stars, but we don't have that option. The book opens flat and invites hours of browsing (make sure you have a sturdy table), and contains a wealth of up-to-date information with at least one omission (perhaps there are more but with a book of this size, it would take a long time to discover them). The omission I am referring to is that there is no mention whatsoever of the New Horizons space probe which was launched from Cape Canaveral in 2006 and is scheduled to arrive in the vicinity of Pluto and its satellites on July 15, 2015 and continue on to the Kuiper Belt and beyond. Nasa hopes to obtain much new and extraordinary data from New Horizons. A brief mention of the approaching spacecraft on the pages devoted to Pluto and the Kuiper Belt would have been ideal. All-in-all, this is a book to delight the armchair astronomer as well as anyone else with even a passing interest in this fascinating subject.

This book is inspiring and has lots of detailed information. It's large and heavy with lots of photos and diagrams. My only disappointment was the shipping. the store shipped it in a simple box with some little air bags in it. When I got it, the box was open, the tape was torn and no packing slip. Because the book bounced around inside the box, some pages got dented. It's a gift so I wasn't happy about that.

This book is chock full of beautiful pictures and great space facts. The content is practically inexhaustible for anyone with an interest in space, and it contains a level of depth on the origins of the universe, planetary formation, and other topics that will be suitable to a wide range of people.

One nitpick is that there are a few omissions and outdated statements, though they are not severe. Although I love browsing the galleries of Martian features, asteroids, and galaxies, they might present a level of detail that is too much for some readers.
