Holy Cow!: An Indian Adventure
Holy Cow!: An Indian Adventure

Review:The author describes India as profound and profane. That pretty much sums up her book as well. Maybe Disney Land with the whiff and splat of raw sewerage would be another summation of her india. She thoroughly investigates every single "ism" and geographic location on the sub continent. Calcutta is about the only place she doesn't visit. The book is thoroughly educational from a cultural, religious, and geographic stand point. In reading up on India for a coming visit she is one of the best... Read more

Travels with Charley in Search of America
Travels with Charley in Search of America

Review:Liked the last portion about his observations in the South during desegregation, and how he presented various viewpoints from different characters perspectives objectively. Gave a nuanced understanding of the feelings about race from the human experience vs the moral and political. Read more

California Road and Recreation Atlas (Benchmark Atlas)
California Road and Recreation Atlas (Benchmark Atlas)

Review:This map is quite thorough. Shows elevation, and quite up to the minute roads and highways. I wish it came in a spiral back, to make it easier to open the pages, and put less wear on the map itself. Read more

A Woman's Solo Trek Across 1700 Miles of Australian Outback

Review:An excellent story of how one woman's journey across the outback of Australia became a life altering event. It is hard to imagine in today's world someone volunteering to endure all that she went through to complete this journey. Read more

Photographs of the Extraordinary (National Geographic Collectors Series)
Photographs of the Extraordinary (National Geographic Collectors Series)

Review:My grandmother ordered this book for my uncle and his wife as a Christmas gift for their coffee table. She was not very impressed with the photographs and decided not to gift it at all. The title says 'RARELY SEEN' which we perceived as never before seen. Flipping through the book, there were definitely many pictures that we've seen elsewhere. There are some great shots in the book, however there are also quite a few lackluster ones as well. Read more

Blood River: A Journey to Africa's Broken Heart
Blood River: A Journey to Africa's Broken Heart

Review:I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It explains why the Congo has never settled down, and probably never will. I've always wanted to do a trip along the Congo River, but now I'm too scared.

Well written, and very readable. Read more

A Travel Guide to More Than 1000 Scenic and Interesting Places Still Uncrowded and Inviting

Review:I think my husband's parents will love this book. They like to travel by car, and explore the country. This book is really thick and a little big for taking in the car. It seems to be more of a trip planning book, maybe for the coffee table, than one you would take with you. Read more

Revised and Updated (Modern Library Exploration) - Scott and Amundsen's Race to the South Pole

Review:Roland Huntford's The Last Place on Earth (Scott and Amundsen's Race to the South Pole), re-published as part of the Modern Library Exploration Series after its original publication in the 1970s, is the precursor to the whole spate of recent books on Arctic explorations, both North and South, to the delight of many readers, myself hungrily among them. The author tells an exciting story and was able to effectively destroy the grand heroic myth of Scott and his run for the South Pole while resurr... Read more
