Old MacDonald Had a Farm (Little Golden Book)
Old MacDonald Had a Farm (Little Golden Book)

Review:Beware! If you buy this book for your toddler you will have to read it (or better yet, sing it) a dozen times a day. And let's face it - Old MacDonald is short on plot. However, the pictures in this version are incredibly cute with lots and lots of funny details. The pictures even tell a simple story, with the happy singing animals gradually taking over Farmer McDonald's house. My 18-month-old granddaughter just can't get enough of it. The construction of the Little Golden Books is so simple and... Read more

The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories
The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories

Review:Although the price tag may seem excessive... this collection of poems and drawings from Burton is a tribute to his mad genius. I owned this before, lost it to a friend who borrowed it (forever), and recently rebought it because I was eager to read it again. It's not long, or involved, and there isn't a hint of plot. This book is, in fact, tiny and short, but well worth it, even if you have to buy it twice. Read more

The Real Mother Goose
The Real Mother Goose

Review:3 little Grandkiddies enjoyed being read to from the SAME book with the SAME pictures that their Daddy and Grandma had when they/we were little. A reproduction with the SAME pictures, same poems/stories from the Original Real Mother Goose of "way back" still thrills little ones. Read more

Mary Engelbreit's Mother Goose - One Hundred Best-Loved Verses
Mary Engelbreit's Mother Goose - One Hundred Best-Loved Verses

Review:As a former children's librarian who is very familiar with children's literature, I think this is possibly the best Mother Goose out there. I bought this for my granddaughter and she loves it, as do I. The selection is great and the illustrations are a delight. Read more

Poems from the Typewriter Series - Chasers of the Light
Poems from the Typewriter Series - Chasers of the Light

Review:The photography and the aesthetic of this book are beautiful. It might be worth having just for the sake of having something so pretty. As for the poetry- I was a little disappointed. Based on what I'd seen of Gregson's work floating around on the internet, and the many good reviews, I had high hopes. But all the poems are very short, with little substance, and many seem to be very minimally different versions of the same love poem. A couple did stand out to me (not that I can reference them as ... Read more

Horton and the Kwuggerbug and more Lost Stories (Classic Seuss)
Horton and the Kwuggerbug and more Lost Stories (Classic Seuss)

Review:Great book! The return of Horton, Mulberry Street, Grinch, etc. If you need a stress relieving end to a hectic day, just curl up in bed with your kids and read this to them at bed time. Or read it with someone else, I don't judge. Read more

Death in Venice: And Seven Other Stories
Death in Venice: And Seven Other Stories

Review:A lot of veiled homoerotic imagery, much of which today would be considered borderline pedophilia. Bogged down by repetitive illusions to the Greek ideals of beauty. Not on narrative par with Buddenbrooks or The Magic Mountain. Best suited for those who wish to say they've read all of Thomas Mann's work. Read more

A Fly Went by (Beginner Books(R))
A Fly Went by (Beginner Books(R))

Review:This book offers those new readers the chance to read by themselves. This was the first book I read alone and without assistance. I later passed this along to my children. I most strongly recommend this book for parents and grandparents of pre-schoolers. Read more

If I Built a Car
If I Built a Car

Review:Chris Van Dusen is this generation's Dr. Seuss.

All of his books are on our FAVORITES shelf. I suspect there is an autobiographical element to "If I Built a Car" and that makes it special. The Mr. Magee books are great, too.

I can't think of anything bad to say. Well, I suppose I'm a little bitter that he can be so talented as to write *and* illustrate such stories! Read more

The Complete Novels (The Greatest Writers of All Time)
The Complete Novels (The Greatest Writers of All Time)

Review:Most would find some of the exaggeration and belaboring of detail too tedious. Some would find tales too outlandish etc. I happen to love everything Clemens wrote, and am also fascinated by boats, rivers, geography, yada. I thought the appendix with the full native American legend to be one of those unexpected gems that just knocks me on my butt. Read more
