The Gates: A Samuel Johnson Tale
The Gates: A Samuel Johnson Tale

Review:Okay, I was desperate for another Charlie Parker Novel and as good as it was this novel is for kids only...very young kids so don't waste your time thinking otherwise. From now on I'll believe Amazon when they say it's for the younger crowd...fourth through eighth grade maybe. Read more

Review:This was my first Wodehouse book. While I did enjoy it, it didn't leave me rushing to read another. I do expect though to read more of them when I'm in a certain mood for a quick, witty, comfy read. Read more

Another Piece of My Heart: A Novel
Another Piece of My Heart: A Novel

Review:This was a thought provocing story. It may seem far-fetched to someone who has not experienced it, but it was very real to me. It should be a lesson to anyone contemplating marrying into a broken family. I have experienced this first hand and this book depicts a situation which is so difficult that it can be , and often is, a deal breaker. In my case it was a step-son who did all that he could to break up our marriage, forcing my husband to make a choice. Fortunately, because of our deep Faith ... Read more

The Heart's Invisible Furies
The Heart's Invisible Furies

Review:It is rare that you find yourself deliberately reading slowly because you want to savour every sentence, every phrase, every word in a novel, and because you don't want the experience to finish. Rich, layered characters, with subtle and complex themes, and an extremely clever plot. John Boyne is magnificent. Read more

The King Must Die: A Novel
The King Must Die: A Novel

Review:I love mythology and history, and after reading the reviews I had high hopes. I could not finish this book. Theseus is portrayed as an oversexed macho twerp. I could not finish because at a certain point I just didn't care what happened to him. I think a teenage boy would love this book, but it's not for me. Read more

Review:Shakespeare - great

I have the collection in electronic form. It is nice to have as a quick reference. It is cumbersome to use as it is difficult to find particular spots within the plays....for the price, I recommend it as a handy reference. Read more

Review:Bernard Cornwell does more than entertain in novels. His research, with onsite visits, brings authenticity of older cultures confronted in struggles and examples we can appreciate and learn from, even today. Read more

The Fortune Hunter: A Novel
The Fortune Hunter: A Novel

Review:I have a very strong knowledge of the subject matter, mostly from an academic perspective. The Fortune Hunter had all the right historical elements, and all the potential be a really great novel. However, sadly, it falls very flat. I didn’t quite love it, but I also didn’t completely hate it. It was just “meh” at best. I enjoy historical fiction, but this was more of an over-wrought love story and just not to my taste. The North Water: A Novel
The North Water: A Novel

Review:as others have noted, the writing is a cross between Jack London and Cormac McCarthy. fantastic imagery. not for the fainthearted, but not over the top gratuitous gore either. the protagonist, if you can call him that, evolves or devolves as it were. has his own sort of redemption which was gratifying to experience with him. loved it! Sound of One Hand Clapping
Sound of One Hand Clapping

Review:Reading the literary accomplishment of this, the artistically arranged words full of alliteration, symbolism, grace and circular phrases which clung to one another in tendrils and curling, looping ribbons, the story finally slipped slowly out. And it was good, but hard-won. Read more
