Energy, Evolution, and the Origins of Complex Life
Energy, Evolution, and the Origins of Complex Life

Review:Very interesting read, but definitely not for mass consumption. I am a biology major and still needed to wade through all the terminology/ ideas presented within. I loved the book, but I would not recommend it to anyone who did not study science Read more

A Pilgrimage to the Dawn of Evolution - The Ancestor's Tale
A Pilgrimage to the Dawn of Evolution - The Ancestor's Tale

Review:This book is not really about the evolution vs creationism issue. That issue is settled in science and only lives on in the minds of the willfully ignorant, some of whom choose to launch an "internet crusade" against Dr Dawkins.

Rather, this book is an odessey of evolution, from ourselves through our ancestors back in time. It is a worthy tale, if a bit detailed at times. Our path has been very contingent and very fascinating. But for all the detail, the point is one of raw awe.

Delusion and the Appetite for Wonder - Unweaving the Rainbow
Delusion and the Appetite for Wonder - Unweaving the Rainbow

Review:Dawkins fans like me will be horrified by this book. Roughly speaking , it could be sub-titled 'Why Science isn't boring' but, unlike the thrilling romp of 'The Selfish Gene' or the interest of 'The Blind Watchmaker', here Dawkins bangs wearily on, often on his own hobby horses or things he evidently knows little about.
He hectors us about watching the X-Files, he has a predictable go at Stephan Jay Gould, he repeats earlier work almost verbatim. His previous books demonstrated brilliantl... Read more

Why the Evidence of Evolution Reveals a Universe without Design
Why the Evidence of Evolution Reveals a Universe without Design

Review:'its just a theory' -- blah blah. Yea. Well, read this, reflect on it--THEN let us discuss it. Amazingly, most creationists have never really read up on evolution to discover how the mechanics of it really work. As Richard Dawkins shows us, it isn't just "random chance".

If you fear this book, get it and read it anyway so you at least know what you are railing against. Read more

The Selfish Gene
The Selfish Gene

Review:As is usually the case with Richard Dawkins' writings, this book clearly and convincingly makes his case. In this case, he convincingly demolishes the concepts of group and individual organism selection and instead promotes gene selection as the means by which various (especially pro-social) behaviours evolved. He also explains the foundations of current evolutionary theory and how it has progressed since Darwin's time.

More importantly, he explains that biology is not destiny and that ... Read more

The Humongous Book of Algebra Problems (Humongous Books)
The Humongous Book of Algebra Problems (Humongous Books)

Review:Wow, just wow. I can't recommend this book enough

A few months ago, I decided to go back to school (specifically for a master's program) and started looking for a text that could help me review all of the algebra I'd forgotten (in preparation for reviewing all the calculus I'd forgotten).

I was basically looking for something that A) would give me a broad understanding of all of the important Algebra topics I need to know and B) wouldn't baby me or throw too much at me in one go. W... Read more

Mastering Essential Math Skills Book Two Middle Grades/High School New expanded edition
Mastering Essential Math Skills Book Two Middle Grades/High School New expanded edition

Review:My recalcitrant learner has been transformed! I found a DVD from this series at our local library and it was so effective I bought two of the workbooks. The videos are clear, humorous, and easy to listen to. This is working beautifully for a homeschool math course for my now seventh grader, who resisted every other math approach I tried. I'm so grateful to find something that works at last! Read more

and the Remaking of the Civilized World - Sinking Cities
and the Remaking of the Civilized World - Sinking Cities

Review:Jeff Goodell is a journalist who travels to low lying areas (e.g., Miami Beach, Venice, Italy, and the Netherlands) and speaks to local experts, politicians and others about their local rising water problems, flooding, etc. and the prospects for the future given sea level rise. (Interestingly, these conversations occur in such places as a Mexican restaurant and a white Range Rover, which the driver says is good for getting around in high water.) This is not a science book. Moreover, the autho... Read more

Review:KSR seems to have been in slow decline since sometime near the beginning of Blue Mars. I tried three times to get through this novel and just didn't have the stamina. Gripping science fiction must, first of all, be gripping fiction. He's lost his grip and run his course, I'm afraid. Read more
