Self-Help
Review:If you're considering this as a self-help book, pause and ask yourself what you really want. If the answer is love, appreciation for your true gifts, and meaningful intimacy, consider getting Deeper Dating by Ken Page instead. Read more
Review:This book is incredible "on" target. It is so insightful and helpful. The author has a way of conveying such specifically accurate realistic applications for people that have lost themselves to an inner "nice guy"- one of the best books I have ever read. Read more
Review:Oh, my god, my house is like a non-stop self-help convention. The rotating cast of literary works cluttering my sofa is nauseating. I'm like "Baby, you're perfect, you can't improve on this model." She's all "You need to allow yourself to change! You're stifling yourself and by extension me! You're just like your father." Pshaw, whatever that means, back to XBox. Read more
Review:"Deep Work" is one of those frustrating books where you whole-heartedly agree with the premise (and it is a fantastic one), but the book falls off the rails when it comes to tactics and process.
Cal Newport is in academia and much of his advice comes from his own "deep work" journey--the process he embarked on to overcome professional setback and create high-quality output at an astounding rate. Review:Golf and Archery as practiced by the Zen masters are among the few sports in which the participant releases a shot without looking at the target. Review:Cute book. I have been following Liz's work for a while and bought this as a present for a friend who just had a baby as a keepsake. She loved it. My only complaint is that the book was slightly dirty when I received it. I was able to clean most of it off, but there are some lines noticeable under light, which makes it look used. The content of the book is lovely, I just wish they had covered it in plastic as the cover is the type that could potentially get dirty. Read more
Review:Unlike Alison Bechdel's childhood home, my house lacks a library, so I usually pass books along to new homes, but I want this one with me forever. It's brilliant, affecting, stunning. Wowwee kazowee! Buy it, read it, keep it forever! Read more
Review:"I am writing the best poems of my life... They will make my name." --Sylvia Plath, on the Ariel poems
It is a pity that Sylvia Plath is so underestimated--most people I know have never heard of her, and those who have dismiss her as an angry feminist who committed suicide. It is a sacrilege to sum up her person so: Plath is one of the most important poets of our century, and Ariel her most important work.
In it one can find the famous poems "Daddy", in which Plath shakes loose her restrai... Read more
