Review:This book was just what I needed this autumn. It made me want to take a trip West in a covered wagon or on a pony. The author does a superb job of making the reader feel part of the journey West. I like a diary or memoir book that is first hand story. I felt the tension as the wagons forded the rivers. I felt the danger as the travelers feared the Indians. I felt the sadness as graves along the way were seen and markers read. I felt the happiness when the people came together for a big me... Review:I purchased the audible edition of this book. The reader was really good. The circus fire is such an interesting and sad event. What runs throughout the story is the thought that this was the CIRCUS. People were there to have fun and forget the war for an hour or so.
I have read several books on this fire, and this one is the best. It is well written, and is never boring. If you buy this one, be sure to have a box of tissues handy! Read more
Review:I have the Large Print paperback version. I want to clarify that in case anyone is considering purchase for easier reading for vision impaired (although this book is excellent for anyone). The book is printed in a easy to read large font on a nice quality paper. That helps also because when you can't see it is sometimes hard to grip the paper if it is thin in your fingers and not rip it or skip over a page. There are pictures of each criminal for each of the 12 cases too. You get a brief introdu... Read more
Review:Fascinating look at Anglo children taken by native Americans in the 1850's to 1870's and the ending of tribal control of the plains. Shows the ignoble racial hatred evinced by Sherman and others that led to the natives demise. Read more
Review:I also liked how this book covers the "re-discovery" of the Inca ruins in the early 1900's and other relevant information.
This book was so compelling to me that I now will plan to visit Peru to visit as many Inca sites as I possibly can. Read more
Review:This book, in my opinion, focuses too much on the politics involved and not about the actual people involved with the actual design and construction of the bridge. I was expecting more technical details and actual experiences of those with their hands on the bridge. Good reading, otherwise. Read more
Review:Takes a bit sort thru all the characters and what is happening .. Then settle in for a real feel period piece of just how close media and law enforcement were. Crime scenes of today do not exist in this who done it.

Review:just finished reading and I am still reeling.....I live in Jennings and have followed this case for years. so many things I had no idea about that this book shed some light on. I was pulled over for speeding a few years ago by one of the cops mentioned several times in the book and I was scared to death. that this man was still on the police force should be a crime. he has moved to the next town over to terrorize their residents. I don't know if justice will ever be served because there are... Read more
Review:It is significant that two journalists wrote this extremely important book. Many professional historians don't want much attention paid to white slavery for fear that it will take something away from black slavery or make whites feel less compassion for black slaves. That is foolish. People must realize that anyone could (and still can) fall into bondage under whatever name if the circumstances are right. Other books that covered similar subject matter (but received little attention) are:
Review:This was a good rendering of you moms secret. Unfortunately whites have deemed that white is best. Black people cannotl afford even today the best of everything. We are oppressed, we have no culture or history. I don blame your mother for passing. She was ensuring a better life for herself and her children. We can't know tribe we come from or experience the life, customs and languages . Unfortunately if you are not pure African they view us differently. I am Kenyon, Nigerian, south Asian, We... Read more
