Review:I guess I'm just not a fan of mystical/science fiction. This work - - and its related series - - came highly recommended to my by a friend. I only made it through the first 8 or 9 pages before hitting the "delete" button. Read more
Review:Thought I'd give this a try as a huge fan of The Stand. I've also read Swan Song. The plot was interesting, but the execution was pretty boring. The character interaction was poor, there were few likeable characters. The descriptions of weather changes, flooding, etc were the best part of the story for me. Read more
Review:This is an excellent novel. It does everything you would expect of a novel. It entertains; it surprises and motivates thought. This book covers 3 million years of time through the viewpoint of one personality. I say personality rather then person, as it is not necessarily the same thing for the purposes of this novel. The author does an excellent job of not getting bogged down in the vast areas of change that happen in 3 million years and only shows us things that are relevant and aid the tellin... Read more
Review:Sequel to 'Bowl of Heaven', continues the story started there. A totally fascinating concept (an artificial "planet" the size of our solar system, driven through space by a "captive" star), the story (spanning both books) is well written, as always with Niven and his collaborations with other authors. Character development is "thick enough" for good science fiction, though a little "thin" if this were a more "conventional" genre of writing. The people are a huge part of the story, but there is a... Read more
Review:Item received promptly and in excellant condition. I read this book in paperback several years ago and it is my favorite "alien invasion" book. Niven and Pournelle are masters of the genre, and I am overwhelmed to at last have this in my collection. I will certainly look forward to what other treasures this dealer has to offer. Read more
Review:I’m more of a zombie fan when it comes to post-apocalyptic fiction but these books pulled me in and didn’t let go. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, masterfully written, and I fell in love with the characters and rooted for them the entire book. I’m not ashamed to say I cried at the end because I did. It’s a testament to how wonderfully written this story is. Truly an amazing read! Mike Kraus is now one of my favorite authors. Read more
Review:It is a nice journal. The cover is just as it appears here. It is a larger than average size journal. The only thing I didn't like was the pages have a name at the bottom of each page or her website or something. I gave it as a gift so I can't look back at it but I remember being surprised it was on each page. Read more
Review:First off, to address the (vanishing) elephant in the room, "After Dark" is not Murakami Haruki's best novel to date. And I say that as someone who habitually enjoys Murakami's fiction, and as someone who liked this latest novel of his well enough. It is not nearly as excellent as the hyper-laudatory critical blurbs planted strategically all over the surface of the book tell you. But then again, it is not nearly as bad as the knowingly harsh naysayers claim, either. If it's a rather lukewarmly a... Read more
Review:I know many-a Murakami fan will disagree with me here, but I find this to be the most complex of all his works. Maybe complex isn't the right word. Enigmatic is better. I can talk for hours on all the other novels, but with this one...frankly I'm stumped. It deals with love and loss, that's clear, but I'm just entirely sure what he's trying to say about it in the end. It seems as if he's almost contradicting him self in a few places. Like the Sumire, Miu, "K" triangle. For a long time I thought ... Read more
Review:Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World is the most fantastically written, intriguing, meaningful, exciting, page-turner of a book that I have read in my eighteen years on this planet. It combines two stories (which are, in fact, one), both so intriguing that I couldn't put the book down. (Neither could my mother or older brother.) Murakami's prose is incredibly vivid and action-packed, like a well-filmed movie or a fantastic dream. This may sound artificial, but his writing, in conte... Read more
