Review:The first 2 books were good. Seeing the different characters develop was the main thing that kept the series going for me (other than the obvious, 'gee this person changed dramatically after it was mentioned some people can change the way they look. Wonder what happened?). Then he throws all that development away and decides to make 2d bullsh*t characters because reasons. Every 'twist' was super predictable and most seemed forced. The bad guys were essentially paper cutout muguffins to make the ... Read more
Review:Excellent set of stories by Joe Abercrombie. I longed for the First Law universe from Joe when I read the Half>>> first book. It was not very good in my estimation.
These are First Law stories Joe did over time loosely tied together. I enjoyed all of them but one that seemed out of place and slow.
Don't peak at the last one. Nice twist. Read more
Review:Continues the excellent character-driven schemes for which the first two books set a precedent. Another thrilling fantasy heist, with a plot full of twists and turns, the deep character history that the first two books whet our appetite for, and a story richer and cleverer than any other! Review:Much to be imagined (which isn't exactly my idea of good writing) with large swaths of time untidily swept into a sentence. The narrative is good, but I'm left with so many strings started late (namely the 'voices') started late and left empty in the end... There was some of this in his first three, but not so glaring.
I've enjoyed the series and DO NOT regret the purchase... But with a slate as wonderfully painted as the broken empire, why settle? Read more
Review:The title pretty much says it all. The story itself is an exciting, page-turning adventure. The Kindle edition is quite terrible though. Not unreadably terrible but certainly unforgivably terrible. There are two extra blank lines for each paragraph break and all sorts of random characters pop up throughout the book (things like > ^ : at the end of sentences in the empt whitespace).
After a few chapters I adjusted to the extra line breaks between paragraphs and, while the horrible f... Read more
Review:Lawrences new series has a lot of interesting concepts running around inside it - but still maintains a lot of the style that made his shattered empire books so enjoyable. Where that world was broken, its inhabitants not sure of exactly what happened, this world knows that its dying - not with a bang, but a whimper. The characters are a little inscrutable. I think Lawrence writes better in the first person, and that makes his protagonists more sympathetic, despite their deep flaws. But I'll cert... Read more
Review:A "pot-boiler" without serving a "satisfying meal". Very easy to put the book down and actually had to force myself back to it a few times. He tries to force a serious plot with light-hearted narrative that simply failed to entertain and felt like "work" at times. According to me it should not be classified as Adult Fantasy, this would be for young adults or teenagers at best where it not for the occasional swear word that felt oddly out of place at times. Could not be bothered to finish the t... Read more
Review:This last book redeemed the series for me after the unnecessarily graphic sex scene in the second book moved into teen romance novel for a time. I didn't see the end coming which made it all the more satisfying. I will recommend the series with a caveat about the second book. Read more
Review:This guy is amazing. He uses the same universe, characters and many of the same settings to tell completely different stories. I would say the only contiguous factor is that all his stories have some grit. I am now reading it for the second time, can't wait for his next book! Read more
Review:I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's the second in the mistborn series and highly addictive. I read the first one in paper back and once I got my kindle it was the first book I purchased. I would recommend for anyone who like sci-fi. Read more
