Review:I'm a David Weber fan. You'll find a different universe here if your a Honor Harrington reader. Writing style is close enough that I pretty much skip the long dialog sections, they are predictable if you've read Weber before. Still a good story with some engaging characters. I always keep a few like this on my Kindle so I've got something to read when life takes me to some queue where I have nothing else to do. Read more
Review:As usual, David Weber has done an excellent job of weaving his story line. As is always the case for novels that continue a series, the author is compelled to review what has transpired in previous novels. Weber does this in a manner that makes the information part of the current story line, rather than something injected merely as reminders of what has transpired previously. Having said that, this is not a book that is "stand-alone' and first time readers need to start with the first book in... Read more
Review:If I hadn't read some of David Weber's books (e.g. Armageddon Troll, Dahak Series) I might think he was confused about what genre he was supposed to be writing for. He does realize he supposed to be writing science fiction right? I mean, that's the gig I signed up for.
Instead I find myself reading page after page after page of boring historical soap opera. I was going to call it an 'historical drama' but then I realized there really is precious little drama in this 700 page tome. It ... Read more
Review:Really nicely done military fiction with good character development, strong ideas and a pseudo realistic technology progression. In other words what's become standard fare for fans of David weber. But the entire book pales to the last paragraph. Don't cheat tho....... Read more
Review:Each successive book in this series tells less of a story then the previous one. This book could have been summarized in about 50 pages without any loss of information. Will the process eventually converge, or should we expect a new, ever more diluted book every year till Langhorne comes? Read more
Review:All David Weber fans should enjoy this book. It's a great continuation of his safehold series. If I had to choose one thing to complain about it would be the extremely detailed explanations of sailing that occur at certain points. As most people don't have the interest to follow those details it can become tiresome. Read more
Review:I'm going to give this one 4 stars - if you are reading this review you are more then likely already familiar with the series. your main question is probably - does the overall plot actually move at all in this one or is it just a lot of detailed period warfare and discussions on re-invented technology? Trust me I understand - for a writer that is so very good at interesting character driven plot and dialogue Mr. Weber has really been putting us through a lot of . . . other stuff. Well, in an... Review:This is the first book I have read by David Weber. I mean no insult to him, or his fans but I have to say there were times when I almost gave up on this book and put it on the shelf (To later list for resale on Ebay!)
""IT WAS A RELIEF TO FINISH IT!""
Too much "POLITICS!" I realize politics (IN MODERATION!) can make a good story,, but that is all this book is!! Maybe that is the "POINT!" but I had a hard time with it. If I had known this was a "Political S.F." novel I would have t... Read more
Review:David Weber is one of my favorite authors and I've been following his Safehold series since he started it a few years ago. David packs all of his stories with a wealth of interesting characters and tons of action. There are always multiple story lines going at the same time and I marvel at his ability to keep them all straight! This is not a standalone volume as it builds on the events of the previous volume, I highly recommend this series if you're into military based sci fi like I am. I also r... Read more
Review:I love the Anne of Green Gables series. This particular book, Windy Poplars, has more description than the other books. It is longer on description and shorter on plot than the other books of the series, but it is well worth reading! Read more
