The Darkling Child: The Defenders of Shannara
The Darkling Child: The Defenders of Shannara

Review:I found this story wholly unsatisfying. The characters lacked depth. The storyline lacked details to bring the story to life. Characters were introduced that added nothing of value to the story as a whole. Even worse the characters actions seemed unrealistic based on the little character development that took place. The Druids, meanwhile have become of minimal importance to Terry's latest offerings, again behaving in a manner counter to the Druid order most Shanarra fans have come to expect. Thi... Read more

The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara Trilogy
The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara Trilogy

Review:This trilogy, along with the original Sword Of Shannara trilogy, and the Heritage Of Shannara trilogy, begins with the excellent Voyage Of The Jerle Shannara, Ilse Witch (which I'm concluding listening to in audio) and look forward to listening to/reading the other parts as well and the Heritage Of Shannara volumes. Armageddon's Children (The Genesis of Shannara - Book 1)
Armageddon's Children (The Genesis of Shannara - Book 1)

Review:For anyone who's read Brooks before, you won't be disappointed. The characters are rich, the plot is engaging and the writing is well developed. This book is the beginning of a series that merges the world of Shannara with Brooks' The Word and The Void series. If you haven't read Brooks before you'll still enjoy this book, but I'd suggest you start with some of his earlier writing. Like I said, this new series is a bridge. Read more

Legends of Shannara (Pre-Shannara - Bearers of the Black Staff
Legends of Shannara (Pre-Shannara - Bearers of the Black Staff

Review:I have read every Shannara book that has come out along with the Word and Void series. I would rate this story at the bottom of that list of books. It is a quick read and let's face it, if you like Terry Brooks you will not end up with garbage. His worst book is still better than many writer's best. I found the story to move very quickly (or I started to get used to reading Jordan and Martin who take longer). I don't remember his other stories moving so fast (but i will need to re-read Swor... Antrax (The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara)
Antrax (The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara)

Review:Terry Brooks does it again.
Fascinating epic of the continuing saga of the heirs of Shannara. Terry Brooks introduces a new cast of characters that have been well developed leaving the reader with a sense of kinship to them all.
If there is a downside to the book, it would be that it mirrors too closely "the Matrix". To the Shannara fan, I do not feel that it takes anything away from the book, but I do believe that, to the new Shannara reader, it may act as a hinderance to those who will ... Read more

The Black Elfstone (The Fall of Shannara)
The Black Elfstone (The Fall of Shannara)

Review:I don't get it. Why would an accomplished, independent, wise beyond her years, "experienced", strong, willful, skilled, extremely intelligent and powerful teenage girl need an old tutor? A teenage girl from a village, who does not like to be told what to do, but is more than willing to tell others what to do, as she has the wisdom and experience to do so. A girl who can pick up flying just by watching. Whose knowledge of magic is so in depth that she is already accomplished enough to make her ow... Read more

Running With the Demon (The Word and the Void Trilogy

Review:This is one of the best books I've ever read and I have read all the Shannara books, all of Tolkien, and many other top-selling fantasy and biographies. If you are looking for the usual Brooks Shannara story you may be initially underwhelmed but keep reading. The irony in this book is top notch. The rest in the series are very good but this one is great. Worthy of its inclusion as one of the top books of the 20th century. Read more

Allanon's Quest (Short Story) - Paladins of Shannara

Review:The short story was good background information for loyal readers of the Shannara series. I finished reading this book in a couple of days. I look forward to reading a couple of the other books I haven't read yet. It was good to read a new book from Terry Brooks. Keep them coming!! Read more

Wards of Faerie: The Dark Legacy of Shannara
Wards of Faerie: The Dark Legacy of Shannara

Review:Wards of Faerie
I will place my review with this, the first book in the series, although I went on to read the second and third books in the series also. The series is aptly named as the "Dark Legacy of Shannara." These volumes are indeed dark. They are even somewhat depressing at times. Most of the lead characters are slain in the books. Quite a few of the characters are very evil, including the Straken Lord, and later Grianne Ormsford, who becomes a new Straken Lord. Stoon, an assassin, is... Read more
