Review:First, some context, particularly for American readers of Fiona Mozley’s debut novel, ELMET. The book’s somewhat unusual title is taken from the ancient kingdom called Elmet by the Celts, now in west Yorkshire in the north of England. Elmet has been previously commemorated in literature, in Ted Hughes’ poetry collection, REMAINS OF ELMET, which used the primeval landscape as a backdrop for mythic scenes of nature bearing witness to men’s acts of violence.
Mozley picks up on many of these ... Read more
Review:Just let me say that this was a very enjoyable book. I will read more of Mr. Barry's works. Thomas Mcnulty and John Cole are two characters that will stay with you..."He looks like he swallowed a live rattlesnake and it's biting him from inside." Thomas Mcnulty! Read more
Review:I had high hopes for this book based on reviews but I wish I had saved my money. None of the characters or plot threads are in any way believable. The end leaves a major plot issue unresolved. simplistic writing and one dimensional characters. Maybe she'll do better next time. Read more
Review:I've been a longtime fan of Machado's. It's really gratifying to start to see universal praise for her work.
This is a hell of a collection. 'Especially Heinous' is the centerpiece, in my eyes. Read more
Review:Although the author goes overboard with figurative language, there are some wonderful passages. Lousy plot. Like reading a trashy talk show. A few bright spots in terms of development, but not many. You wouldn't be missing out if you passed this one up. Read more
Review:I don't know where to start. I read a lot, generally at least two books a week. I love large, thick books that can take awhile to read. When I love a book, the longer it lasts the better it is! I read with enjoyment. I don't spend my reading time with anything that I don't enjoy, which is why I seldom give books less than 3 stars here or on any other site on which I post my reviews. Actually, most of my reviews are 4-5 stars. This one should have at last 7 stars by that reckoning. Some books, ve... Read more
Review:For those who loved Watership Down for all its well-plotted adventures of Hazel and his friends who leave their home warren and journey out into the world, this book will probably pale in comparison. Tales from Watership Down is more a book of short stories, some loosely connected together, some not even related to one another. All the stories in this book are as fun to read as the short stories of El-ahrairha in the original book, but while those stories served mostly to further the plot and ... Read more
Review:This book explores from a slightly different angle the story of King Arthur. The storyline is both readily familiar and yet new. The writing is crisp, fascinating, and infused with its own magic.
One of the neat aspects of this book is that the author periodically steps into the writing to tell you that Malory had this to say and, well, he says it better, so for more info on this, why don't you just go read his account of this part of the story. Pretty interesting way to go about it. ... Read more
Review:This story is so traumatizingly sad. I watched the movie and I decided to read the book but it breaks my heart. The sadness of the dogs loyalty to humans despite all that's happened is just heart wrenching.
There are characters who speak in heavily accented English but while it slows you down in some parts but its far from unreadable- later editions address this and there's a glossary where you can look it up.
Sad sad story about animals and people and how we interact with each oth... Read more
Review:This was my first time reading anything by Stephie Walls. It took me a while to get into it but once I did, I couldn't put it down. The books plot twists kept me guessing and I loved that. I don't want to be reading something and knowing exactly what happens next. You certainly don't with this book :)
James and Cora's story had pretty much everything you want in a book. Second chance love, secret baby, estranged family etc.... I could go on but I think you should just 1-click it and see for y... Read more
