Speak, Memory: An Autobiography Revisited
Speak, Memory: An Autobiography Revisited

Review:This book is a delight. Some of the criticisms listed here remark that the biography, though beautiful, is not informative enough, humorless, or even fundamentally dislikable. I disagree. I believe that Nabakov possessed enough skill and intent to write an autobiography in any tone or context he might choose; I therefore believe that the lens through which he shows us his youth has been carefully chosen and rendered. Dry accounts of facts and events in so many biographies make them a struggl... Read more

Dune Messiah (The Dune Chronicles, Book 2)
Dune Messiah (The Dune Chronicles, Book 2)

Review:Dune Messiah--along with the rest of the Dune Chronicles--takes a noticeably different pace from Herbert's original Dune novel. The passage between Dune and the rest of the series forces the reader deeper into the subtleties of character-consciousness, and will be appreciated only by those who find themselves intrigued by the social, theological, and psychological tonalities of the Dune universe. In this novel, Herbert slows down the action and enters the psyche of a boy-turned-man-gone-god. He ... Read more

Children of Dune (Dune Chronicles, Book Three)
Children of Dune (Dune Chronicles, Book Three)

Review:(This is the third book in the Dune series and therefore the review will contain spoilers for the first two, Dune and Dune Messiah. And maybe even some for this one. You have been warned!)

It is 9 years since the blinded and heartbroken Paul Muad'dib walked off into the desert of Dune to die. His weird little children, Leto and Ghanima, take after their Auntie Alia in so many ways – prescient, gifted or cursed with the memories of all their ancestors, nuts. Until now I thought the horrid ... Read more

Book Two of the Legends of Dune Trilogy - The Machine Crusade
Book Two of the Legends of Dune Trilogy - The Machine Crusade

Review:As sequels go, The Machine Crusade suffered from the second book syndrome. It had some definite potential, but the authors, with their usual short, choppy chapters, don't allow themselves the time to develop character and plot. There are several character aspects that deserved expansion: Jool Noret and the Mercenaries of Ginaz, Erasmus and his "child," and the character of Selim Wormrider, which had definite moments of greatness, could have been a volume unto itself. This is the main problem wit... Read more

Heretics of Dune
Heretics of Dune

Review:Not as good as the God Emperor but interested enough to finish the chronicles of Dune. I am about 1/2 way through.

After listening to the whole series and giving it a little more time I just wanted to add to this review. This is the best science fiction series out there. I enjoyed it even more the second time. Read more

God Emperor of Dune (Dune Chronicles, Book 4)
God Emperor of Dune (Dune Chronicles, Book 4)

Review:a continuation of the dune story line. Set long after Children of Dune. Lots of dialog and only sporadic action. Far different than the first few books. The terraformring of dune is nearly complete. The god emperor has been in power 2500 years. The ramifications of his iron hand and the scarcity of spice are becoming apparent. Read more

Once a century, one person is chosen for greatness.
Elisa is the chosen one.

Vampire Hunter Novel - Incubus Dreams - An Anita Blake
Vampire Hunter Novel - Incubus Dreams - An Anita Blake

Review:I have reread this series several times. Yet I have not been able to bring myself to reread Incubus Dreams. I enjoy many of the characters that are not as beloved by many other fans, but even Nathaniel, who is my favorite and is given much page time, is shorted. His story is slopped down without seeming thought as to how this newest development heightens or helps the main character within LKH's world.

The book seems like it is a neverending rough draft. I am a reader who skims over spelli... Read more

Flirt: An Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter Novel
Flirt: An Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter Novel

Review:I have always liked Anita Blake as a series. I have made excuses for the books. I can't make them any more. This is by far her best writing in a while that is not pure sex. It is also not a book. It is a scene and the aftermath. In her indulgent manner to release this as a 24 dollar book is to show how much she does not care for any of her readers. The essay and comic on how she writes and the situation that served as the impetus for the book are okay if you want to know. But to show us t... Read more

Vampire Hunter Novel - Kiss the Dead - An Anita Blake
Vampire Hunter Novel - Kiss the Dead - An Anita Blake

Review:PLOT. Where is it? It's like Hamilton was searching for a direction for this series to go, couldn't come up with one so she decided to pick something easy like a RPIT (police/marshal) case to weave her sex scenes around. In the past I have liked the police/marshal books, especially with Edward and gang. Those actually felt like stories. This felt like filler. No depth. No interest.

WRITING. It felt less like a story and more being talk at or lectured.

SEX. All of these books... Read more
