Halt's Peril: Book Nine (Ranger's Apprentice)
Halt's Peril: Book Nine (Ranger's Apprentice)

Review:Out of the entire series, only Halt's Peril is 14.99. The rest are either 7.99 or 10.99, and I am not sure why this one was so expensive. Also, there were a lot of strange spelling errors peppered throughout the book, a bad sign for the Kindle editor since the print edition is not like this. Still, it is a great book. Read more

The Lost Stories: Book 11 (Ranger's Apprentice)
The Lost Stories: Book 11 (Ranger's Apprentice)

Review:Short story collections are usually a "mixed bag." I really enjoyed this one. First of all, it filled in some storyline gaps. It has some really powerful moments as well as some really fun ones. Dear Jenny even was in the limelight in one and held her own very well, in the end. It's all here: adventure, drama, heart-string tugs, humor, and more. I love how the characters have come so far and how so much of the collective stories have been about true courage, friendship, and loyalty. Read more

Book Five (Ranger's Apprentice) - The Sorcerer of the North
Book Five (Ranger's Apprentice) - The Sorcerer of the North

Review:John Flanagan moves the Ranger's Apprentice series forward in flawless fashion. While our young hero, Will, is older now, Mr. Flanagan has aged him believably and Will continues to be a vibrant and rich character. Anyone that has read the previous books in the series knows Mr. Flanagan is a master at ending a book with an old style cliff hanger that is reminiscent of the nearly forgotten pulp stories of yesteryear. This book is no exception. The ending leaves you hanging and wanting more. F... Read more

2061 (Space Odyssey Book 3)

Review:The economics of supply and demand, had Mt. Zeus been successfully repositioned to the proximity of Earth, would have effectively lowered its intrinsic value to little more than that of purified water. Read more

The Fountains of Paradise (Arthur C. Clarke Collection)
The Fountains of Paradise (Arthur C. Clarke Collection)

Review:The Clark novel is well worth reading. I found it only because I was researching Haruki Murakamis influences as a writer and this novel had the best reviews of the less-than-epic Arthur C Clark novels. This is a novel that could be given to teenagers interested in science if they were grounded enough not to be defensive about Clark's invective's against religion and specifically Jesus.

Those that look for more human characterization should consider novel forms that excel at that; like st... Read more

Snow Like Ashes
Snow Like Ashes

Review:I have been hearing so much about this book and the sequel, Ice Like Fire, that I decided to pick it up at the library. I am soooooooo glad that I did.

The story follows, Meira, a Winterian refugee who was one of the few that escaped the King of Spring’s attack. Meira is an orphan and has been raised by William. Meira has called him “Sir” since the time she made the mistake of calling him father.

I liked the fiercely headstrong Meira we got to know as the book progressed. She is ce... Read more

Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne - Book I - The Emperor's Blades
Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne - Book I - The Emperor's Blades

Review:This book is to blame for the grizzly in me - I devoured it in 9 straight hours with gaps in between to eat, drink and a short nap. Fantastic prose, imagination and a tight plot. I especially appreciate that instead of sibling rivalry, the book champions family unity - a breath of fresh air. The world building is out of this world and can't wait to be sleepless again tonight with Book 2! Read more

Unaccustomed Earth (Vintage Contemporaries)
Unaccustomed Earth (Vintage Contemporaries)

Review:I'm perplexed by some of the reviews calling the stories in this excellent collection from Jhumpa Lahiri 'monotonous.' Other than the fact that the stories all start with a base of second-generation Bengalis in the US, each of tales seem fresh, new and inventive. It's a treat to see the small worlds that Ms. Lahari can create in 40 or so pages from a standing start. Of course, I came in with a bias: I adored The Nam... Read more
