Literature & Fiction
Review:I read a lot of science fiction and I'd have to say this was one of the most thought provoking books I've read in a long time. As the 1st book in a series it sets the stage for an epic space battle. The author's writing style can ramble on a bit (these books are long) however, the concepts presented are fascinating...I have not been so mesmerized by "the bad guy" since The Borg. As for the character development, there are so many characters that it's hard to connect to any one in particular, ... Read more
Review:Absolutely, did not care for the book. Purchased the book after seeing the 4 star rating for it and was sorely disappointed. For those of you planning to buy the book please don't read any further. In my opinion, there was nothing interesting about the central character Rose. She was selfish, self- centered, a terrible mother, a terrible wife and a terrible daughter.... Not in the least likeable. How can one like the book when the central character is so cold, uncaring and shallow...beats m... Read more
Review:I have read and enjoyed all of Pearl Buck's book, however, I found this novel to be slow moving and di not really go into the war on China. This story only concentrated on one farming family wthout much depth. Read more
Review:Beautifully written. A well developed story that included several important social issues as well as wonderful character development. Would make a great book club selection because the presented issues are relevant to today's world. Timeless. Read more
Review:I have enjoyed this trilogy immensely, the insight into early China and the characters were powerful and gave the feeling of being there looking on. An extremely gifted author whose books I will follow with interest. Read more
Review:Pearl Buck's books are all fascinating. What life is really like, mostly in farm country, in Asia. Their customs, food, family ties. I love all of her books because they take me to another time and place. Read more
Review:I could not decide if I liked or disliked the protagonist of this book. Either way, it was thought provoking on the issue of women having a life separate from a family. Although this seemed to take place in the 1950s, the subject matter is still an issue today. The action seemed slow moving in the early part of the book, but I became very engrossed as the characters were filled out and took on life. Read more
Review:I really enjoyed this book. I love the way Charles Martin writes and tugs at your heart strings. I couldn't put it down until I was finished, and then wished it would have continued on. A very good read I think. Read more
Review:Don't waste money on this one. Had it not been chosen for my book club, I would have not finished it.Story is not believable, found myself amazed at how ridiculous the story line was. I have read many free books that were well written and truly enjoyed. Don't think this author will win any literary awards. Read more
Review:Again- Charles Martin DOES NOT disappoint! When you can jump into a book and have to claw your way out to just go to sleep-- then the writer has done his job. We all can identify with Coop-- we've all awakened inside a nightmare and most time we had a hand in creating it. But, nothing can take the place of feeling of freedom when chains are broken and you've been set free. Not many books create an echo that keeps coming back and grabbing your heart again and again like "LONG WAY GONE" if you hav... Read more
