Review:Luis Alberto Urrea's latest book is about our better angels and how they guide us to purpose and meaning. "All we do, mija," the oldest brother, Big Angel, says, "is love. Love is the answer. Nothing stops it. Not borders. Not death."
Miguel Angel de la Cruz - aka Big Angel - is dying and he wants one last big birthday party. His entire huge and rambunctious family, including Little Angel - the son from his father's second life and a stand-on for Luis Alberto Urrea - are there for the mer... Read more
Review:There is no writer I know of who is more adept at capturing the depth and intricacies of a given human emotion than Gabriel Garcia Marquez. He never tires of exploring the depths of love and never ceases to be fascinating in so doing.
In 'Love in the Time of Cholera', Garcia Marquez tells the tale of Florentino Ariza and his boundless, but unfulfilled love for a childhood sweetheart named Fermina Daza. The longing and torment that Florentino experiences throughout over half a century of F... Read more
Review:I can see a lot of people hating this book, because the main plot involves a 90 year old falling in love with a 14 year old virgin whore. And taken at face value, a lot of what goes on in this story can be pretty twisted--but having said that, I really don't think you're supposed to take this story at face value. The main protagonist, when you take a step back, is sad, and his insides are contorted with nostalgia and a lack of fulfillment in his life. I don't want to spoil too much, but it's pre... Read more
Review:I should first say that this is the first Milan Kundera book I've read and it was not as scary/difficult/intense as I thought it might be. Kundera's writing has an almost fairy taleish feel to it that makes the story rather inviting. I think Kundera's skill is the ability to create characters and situations that most people can identify with. Everyone I know who's read this book finds elements of himself in one or a combination of the characters. Kundera articulates emotions infinitely bette... Read more
Review:The book is undoubtedly a classic and a masterpiece, it's just not my cup of tea. I don't like it when reality and fiction are mixed to that extent. The use of the Spanish language is superb, I had to look up so many words in the dictionary and Spanish is my first language. Having said all that I'm glad I read it. Read more
Review:“The House of Spirits” Book Review
By: Alexis Aguirre
The House of Spirits by Isabel Allende is an incredible and dramatic novel that takes you through several generations of the Del Valley and Trueba family. The novel is almost chilling at times because of the creepy and unorthodox events that take place in the book. Eerie and uncomfortable matters such as conducting an autopsy in a kitchen where the body is then molested to unusual things like a child willingly not speaking for year... Read more
Review:This was a surprising book with a wide-variety of characters: a rich self-employed assassin (but a good guy? Yes!) who owns a horse about to ride in the Kentucky Derby; a CIA agent assigned to watch him; an international movie star; and others.
Factor in the assassins, international intrigue, and you have a thriller that keeps you not wanting to put the book down. Read more
Review:Bought this book since I, too, had lost my beloved dachshund and figured I would appreciate and sympathize what the author was writing about. There was too much symbolism for me. A straight cut story that was heartfelt and sincere without having to read between the lines would have been better. I understood what the author was doing but it was too strange for me. I still sympathize with him and his loss as any pet lover would. Read more

Review:I like the Kate Daniels series. There's a lot of blood and fighting, but it's fairly fast moving with interesting characters and decent plots. The authors do a good job.
On the other hand, the Edge series, while again having some interesting characters, is way too dark. Read more
