True Crime
Review:Masterful storyteller Ann Rule has presented her millions of readers with another superb account from the true-crime annals, this one set in the burgeoning suburbs of Atlanta and the genteel, flowery city of Augusta. Victims Jenn Corbin and Dotty Hearn are brought to vivid, multi-dimensional life as we are drawn into this complex tale involving two murders more than a dozen years apart. The large cast of characters, including the extended families of both victims and killer, and the law enforc... Read more
Review:Ann Rule's true crime account of the Hollywood bank robber is about Scott Spurlock aka Hollywood who went and robbed banks in the Seattle and Portland region. Ann Rule has lived in the Pacific Northwest and has written about crimes in the area. She writes about Scott Spurlock and his friends from their days in Reston, Virginia (a Washington DC suburb); their time in Hawaii; and Scott's new home in Olympia, Washington.
Rule has researched and interviewed all the players involved in this sa... Read more
Review:Manipulation, greed, murder. Ann Rule's books are starting to have a familiar ring to them. Small Sacrifices, Bitter Harvest, Too late to say goodbye, all have a selfish perpetrators who will stop at nothing to get what they want. Everyone is expendable, even children. She is a good writer vividly painting the characters and the setting. Lengthy descriptions of backgrounds and dialogs with Tom could have been cut. Ann made her point: Pat was manipulative and probably wanted him dead. Read more
Review:This book is bogged down with far too many unnecessary details (and repetition thereof) that I often found myself thinking: get to the storyline (or back to the storyline), please!
I slugged my way to the end of the first major story, only because I wanted to find out what happened to the alleged wife-killer - but after getting a few pages into the next story, I finally had to admit defeat, and the fact that I wasted $7 on a book that I just didn't enjoy.
Which happens to all of us... Read more
Review:Well-researched book about the The Green River Killer, Gary Ridgeway. While this book certainly pays tribute to the many young women whose lives were senselessly snuffed out without a second thought by this "killing machine" - Ann Rule is not a particularly gifted writer, in my opinion.
The book was very detailed though and it is obvious how much time and energy she put into researching the life of such a chilling murderer who so clearly had no remorse for all of the lives he ended.
Review:I have just finished reading "Every Breath you Take", and I must say it was a hellish, though compelling read. I found it impossible to put down. Allen Van Houte/Blackthorne is clearly a deeply disturbed man, and the story of how he stalked, tormented and ultimately arranged the execution of his ex-wife is truly sickening. Ms Rule writes in a matter-of-fact fashion about the circumstances leading up to Sheila's murder, and the ensuing murder investigation/trials. Some reviewers have criticis... Read more
Review:I highly recommend The Big Book of Serial Killers as a great encyclopedic resource from a seasoned author. The professional formatting was designed to synthesize factual information into an interesting backstory. At a glance, important characteristics described serial killers, victims, locations and criminal status similar to your favorite step-by-step technical manual. The overview coupled with new factual background data not generally presented, provided childhood traumas in a cohesive mann... Read more
Review:As always Anne rules ... I never get tired of her writing style and method. I grew up on Anne Rule after reading the Stranger beside me in the 70s ... I was hooked. A fascination with 'why' when reading true crime, I love the way Anne delves into the history and psychology of not only her killers but their victims. You can never go wrong with one of Ms Rules' page turning reads. Read more
Review:A fabulous read, writer Ann Rule takes us from crime to resolution in a fast-paced story that is almost impossible to put down. If you enjoy non fiction crime stories, "Small Sacrifices" is the gold standard of this genre. It is definitely a must-read. Read more
