Review:This little book is a wonderful compact introduction the methodology of analytical mechanics. While not new to me, I thoroughly enjoyed this review of the action principle, the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulation of the equations of motion, symmetries and conservation laws, and Poisson brackets. For those who think these fancy techniques are superfluous, and all mechanical problems can be solved with F = ma, the authors suggest setting up the equations of motion for the double pendulum. Review:I am having trouble in a college physics class that uses the book Modern Physics and the master physics website. I got this as a study aid. I did not intend for it to replace the textbook only supplement it. The book did not contain the formulas that I need. That is why I am only giving it 2 stars. Read more
Review:This book arrived quickly which I appreciated, but I returned it after the semester as I was renting it and I never received the price adjustment. Instead I was charged the purchase price.
I contacted Amazon about this because the cc used to make the rental had expired and I didn't know if they needed a new card # or would send a check. Amazon said they would send a check. I've contacted them twice by email but still haven't received a price adjustment and no I now longer have the book... Read more

Review:excellent book targeted for kids from the age of approx 12 - 99 ! it gives you just enough technical info about the element, some pictures of what the material looks like in its raw form, details of how it was discovered, and some history of the practical uses of the element. i think that this book should be required reading in high school for anyone planning on taking technical curriculum. it also looks great on my coffee table. Review:I thought that Neil Shubin's first book, Your Inner Fish, was simply a masterpiece of non-fiction and one of my favorite books of all time. So perhaps my expectations were unrealistically high when I eagerly opened his second offering. The scope of this one is certainly more ambitious: after exploring the genetic heritage within the human species, he now considers the literally cosmic heritage of all life on Earth! It is this very expansiveness that led to my mild disappointment, however. The wr... Read more
Review:The author describes the body's transition from ape to man using many examples of physical and mental development. His explanations are logical and convincing especially for an amateur evolutionist like myself. At times, it's overly technical and repetitive in some areas but the book provides many answers as to why our species has survived environmental and social changes of the past. Read more

Review:I recently purchased this book from Amazon and I was very pleased with the prompt delivery and reduced price compared to the school bookstore price, however I am not without complaints. I understand that this book commands a hefty price tag, it's huge! What I don't understand is why we are in the ninth edition of printing. Have there been that many advances in this field of study to require a new edition every couple of years. As far as I can tell it is just an excuse to sell new books; very li... Read more
Review:This book is pretty descent. The only reason that I bought it was for a class and the teacher said he'd use another book of the University let him but that this one was "ok. It is not good or bad, but mediocre." Read more
