The Collected Stories (Star Wars - Lost Tribe of the Sith
The Collected Stories (Star Wars - Lost Tribe of the Sith

Review:Very good writing. The evolution of how the Sith evolved on that planet was intriquing. Would have liked to hear more about what happened to the downed jedi's family and how might have created underground. Read more

War As I Knew It
War As I Knew It

Review:The war/anti-war movie Patton some years ago gave us a storehouse of anecdotes and images about this larger-than-life character. Some of the conventional biographies about Patton get lost in the many contradictions between his various public and private personae. War as I Knew It, though falling in the time-hallowed military genre of "leaving one's own record", presents a fascinating set of contradictions as poignant as any cinematic fantasy about Patton. The work is quite short, and

Surface Detail (Culture series)
Surface Detail (Culture series)

Review:A new wave of (mostly British) authors are creating entire universes all their own, and Banks is the latest entry. Although I found his universe of interest and worth exploring, the book left me cold in a number of ways. The story alternated between the young female star (Lededje), and a number of AI personalities that were trapped in their own private hells. Apparently a number of cultures in this galaxy punish the dead by copying their memories and 'torturing' the memories in computerized hell... Read more

The Greatest Submarine Rescue in History - The Terrible Hours
The Greatest Submarine Rescue in History - The Terrible Hours

Review:Maas provided a riveting read and a naval history lesson. Swede Momsen was truly a hero. The book is a tribute to his character and dedication to his work. The difficulty of raising Squalus while solving technical problems and performing scientific research critical to your mission at the same is so daunting that most men would have thought it impossible at the outset. Even today the task would be a near impossibility. I agree with other reviewers that illustrations and/or diagrams of t... Read more

Stuxnet and the Launch of the World's First Digital Weapon
Stuxnet and the Launch of the World's First Digital Weapon

Review:Gripping, well written, well paced, and is clearly written by someone who knows what they're talking about. It has a unique ability to describe details an analyst will appreciate, but can be understood by someone interested in the storyline because of the author's ability to explain technical details well. It's worth your money. Do it. Read more

Ninefox Gambit (Machineries of Empire)
Ninefox Gambit (Machineries of Empire)

Review:A fantasy story with virtually no underlying science or theories to support any of the technology that the story is based upon.

The author doesn't even attempt to explain the principles upon which any of the weapons systems described in the story might operate. The closest we get to an explanation are some vague references to calendars and mathematics.

If one excludes the speculative "technology", The Ninefox Gambit becomes an ordinary tale of political intrigue, conflict and magic... Read more

The True Story Of A Secret War In Laos - Vietnam - The Ravens
The True Story Of A Secret War In Laos - Vietnam - The Ravens

Review:Mr. Robbins explains a lot that I didn't understand as I went through the madness of Vietnam, first from the safety of my living room, then the uncomfortable waiting at Ft. Bragg as Saigon fell. To know that some men had the convictions to fight the war on their terms instead of the politics and bureaucracy makes me wish I could have known him and his fellow airmen. Thank you, sir, for your service. Read more

Saga Volume 7
Saga Volume 7

Review:Another amazing, painful, and perfect volume. It'll tear you apart, but you won't be able to walk away, no matter how much it hurts.
I'm not going to give you any info about the story (no spoilers and such) but I will say you're probably gonna get teary... Read more

Book Five (Star Carrier Series) - Star Carrier
Book Five (Star Carrier Series) - Star Carrier

Review:Far too much filler through constant repetition of previously stated facts. The author is clearly trying to milk this otherwise excellent series to the maximum which is disappointing. Also the author's rather distorted political views, while lightly hinted at in his previous books, now are clearly brought forth and truly detract from the story, to the point that the book feels almost like a manifesto.
Perhaps it's time to put this series to rest before Mr. Douglas ruins it completely... Read more

The Bridge: A Science Fiction Survival Story
The Bridge: A Science Fiction Survival Story

Review:I enjoyed this book. The setting in particular is quite fascinating: a pre-industrial society aboard a spaceship. Yet as much as I enjoyed the story, there was a distinct lack of cohesion and tightness that a professional editing process imbues. Beyond that, I felt most of the characters were a little flat and didn't have the requisite complexity or depth for me to truly enjoy them. If I were able, I'd actually rate this 3.5 stars. However, the ending and plot hook for the sequel makes me round ... Read more
