Review:The last book might be the best fantasy book I've ever read. I've never felt for a character as I do for Sieh. The only bad thing about it, is that I'll never be able to read them for the first time again. Jemisins writing style is a style I've never come across before. And I absolutely love it. I'd recommend these books to anyone and everyone. Read more
Review:This book series is so fantastic. I'm in the last few pages, and I'm already excited to read it again! Now how will I muster the patience to wait for the third book?? Thanks NK Jemisin for this incredible creation of yours! Read more
Review:The end of the trilogy begun with The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, The Kingdom of Gods is a worthy conclusion of this tale of gods made flesh and how they adapt, change and grow (or die. Yes, this book is a tragedy as well as a fantasy, just like her previous books).
The whole of this trilogy is the best thing I have read from a new novelist, maybe ever. I have opined previously that it's a lie that THTK was her first novel. She's `way too good for that; she was a best-selling novelist i... Read more
Review:The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms is N. K. Jemisin's debut novel and the first in her Inheritance trilogy. The book features strong, compelling, fully-developed characters in a grand and complex world, but Jemisin keeps the stage small in this book, introducing the readers to a number of main characters and some of the world, while clearly indicating that there is a lot more to be told.
From the barbarian north, Yeine Darr is outcast and would like nothing more than to live an ordinary, norm... Read more
Review:The best science fiction and fantasy (and this book is solidly both) is well written, compelling, and emotionally charged, but also tells us about the world we live in. This series is about love, family, racism, hatred, and redemption. Fans of Jemisin's other books will find this as good or better than her previous work; and wholly original, as I've come to expect. The worst part about this was finishing it ; I can't wait to see what she does next! Read more
Review:I've only read the first few stories in the book, but I am loving these glimpses of the daily lives of minor characters. Some are written from hilarious points of view, such as an administrator dealing with paperwork on Darth Vader's star destroyer. Each story gives enough information to identify the character from the movies and then brings out who that person really is and how s/he impacts the plot. It expands the universe by saluting the ordinary people (and other life-forms) that populate... Read more
Review:Given the importance of this, the intro to the New EU, I am also baffled that they picked such a poor writer. Did Chuck Wertig grow up reading only text messages? Or Tweets? Maybe it's supposed to be all edgy-n-angular, but what it is just lame. What happened to the authors who did a much better job on the old EU? I heard a rumor that The Mouse felt that they were too expensive and so went with cheaper options. To the story, I guess this is the background? Kinda pedestrian. Maybe only deserved b... Read more
Review:I’m going to get one thing out of the way here. I’ve read just about every Star Wars novel that has been released since the Thrawn Trilogy in the 90′s. I’ve been captivated and emotionally invested in this expanded universe, and while it has always been “non canon”, almost everyone who read the books didn’t take it that way. You have almost 25 years of continuous story, and now, that’s all down the drain. It’s fair to say that I’ve got mixed feelings about this. I mean, Han and Leia could n... Read more
Review:I'm looking back on this book as I remember it when I was fourteen and the movie had just come out. It was cool because it had scenes in that didn't make it into the film, although they were filmed. The book was superior in some ways because it was written before the script was finalized. The other books, I believe were written from the script. I loved this book back then and still do love it. It's fun, full of interesting characters, and full of action. All you need is the soundtrack to settle ... Read more
Review:This is only the second star wars book (to my knowledge) written in the third person and I think it's great. What most star wars fans don't realize is that you don't have to have 100% of the book being lightsabee fights and ships blowing up. This gives great insight into the mind of Luke and gives great insight into why things happen in the future Read more
