Beyond Religion: Ethics for a Whole World
Beyond Religion: Ethics for a Whole World

Review:First time reading a book from Dalai Lama, find it indeed interesting and illuminating not just from the perspective of religion; faith; His Holiness, but also seem to me applicable to everyone and everywhere. Seem to me like it should be taught to everyone nowadays irregardless of nationality, maybe in a Moral class or something.

I personally believe Religion has caused many to differentiate themselves and to not mingle with others of other faiths but when we look at it broadly, we're sa... Read more

How to Practice: The Way to a Meaningful Life
How to Practice: The Way to a Meaningful Life

Review:Started reading this book to try to find a little more enlightenment in my life. Ive read quite a few books on buddhism already, but I like the practical way the Dalai Lama delivers his message. There are also some good meditation techniques included. Overall a good read and worth the money, I even still continue some of the breathing techniques for my own meditation Read more

Zen Golf: Mastering the Mental Game
Zen Golf: Mastering the Mental Game

Review:As the author requests at the beginning of the book, this book will only help those that approach its message and tips with an open mind. Naturally skeptical, it took a few chapters before I was able to stop silently criticizing the flowery "zen" language and new-age metaphors and actually hear the message being delivered.

Once I did, however, it was well worth it. As I stated in the review title, the author offers simple but solid tips and concepts to improve the mental aspects of your g... Read more

Buddhism and the Twelve Steps - One Breath at a Time
Buddhism and the Twelve Steps - One Breath at a Time

Review:I HAVE REALLY ENJOYED READING THIS BOOK AND ALSO DOING AN INVENTORY. WHAT WAS HARD FOR ME WAS EXPECTING A "BIG BOOK". BUT THIS BOOK IS WRITTEN FROM A DRUNK'S POINT OF VIEW WHO HAPPENS TO BE A BUDDHIST. HOW VERY INTERESTING IS THAT? ONCE I GOT OVER MY EXPECTATIONS, I LEARNED A GREAT DEAL ABOUT BUDDHISM, THE STEPS FROM ANOTHER'S VIEW, OTHER RELIGIONS AND MY OWN CHARACTER DEFECTS. I HAVE LONG-TERM RECOVERY (EVEN THOUGH I AM ONLY ONE DRINK AWAY FROM THAT SLIP). I STILL GO TO MEETINGS KNOWING I AM CH... Read more

Mindfulness: A Practical Guide to Awakening
Mindfulness: A Practical Guide to Awakening

Review:Just finished it, and have started back at the beginning to pick up points I no doubt missed my first time through. Plenty of good advice to be found here - and I must say it's already impacted how I think/respond to things. I'm a "work in progress"!

How timely (election 1 week away now) that politics was mentioned in a few passages, appropriately in a negative light - even touching on "birtherism"!! Read more

The Practice of Being Aware, Right Now, Every Day
The Practice of Being Aware, Right Now, Every Day

Review:This book expanded my knowledge of Buddhism and I will definitely use it frequently. This is not a book that you can read and capture all the meanings of the vocabulary used in the book. I would also recommend it to others who are interested in expanding their knowledge of other religions and beliefs. Read more

An Anthology of Discourses from the Pali Canon (The Teachings of the Buddha)
An Anthology of Discourses from the Pali Canon (The Teachings of the Buddha)

Review:Buddha's words make you self-aware and enable you to break away from human condition. Once you are no longer chasing your tail, you can devote your mental energies to better things in life and Buddha also shows you how to do that perfectly. You will also take better care of your physical health. Overall, a must read for mental and physical well-being. I loved Bhikkhu Bodhi neat introductions in the beginning of the chapters that excellently summarized meanings of the suttas. Read more
