great book, I would recommend it to both individuals new to mindfulness practices and those who have been practicing for years. I have read the book several times over the past year and always seem to get something new out of it that is helpful!

This book answers all the questions which one starting meditation to develop mindfulness might wish to know. It describes powerful developments in awareness that one can expect with enough cumulative hours spent in mindfulness meditation. Anticipation of developing those abilities serves as a powerful motivation. After reading it, I bought additional copies to send to my daughter and grandson.

it is a lot of information. The only difference between my 4 star and a 5 star rating is something about the presentation. It seems a bit dry at times, and there is an attribute that I can not define. I would encourage you listen to this series of audio if you want to change your attitudes about yourself and others.

This is a very important book. Very insightful, informative, & at times humorous. Gunaratana walks the razor's edge between explaining & brief clarity, giving just enough to provide a firm practical foundation. He touches on a sketch of orienting theory lightly enough to provide context without getting too deeply entrenched in Buddhist culture so as to distract from the method & its application possibilities. The wording seems effortlessly Western & familiar. It certainly encourages an easy & fruitful beginning insight meditation & universal friendliness practice.

What makes this book wonderful is his insightful, practical, jargon free descriptions of the detached, wise state one is trying to achieve through mindfulness. The book is inspiring. I love it and dip into it regularly for inspiration.

This is easily the best book on Mindfulness Meditation. If you want to get an in-depth understanding of the why, what, and how of mindfulness or insight meditation, then this is the book for you. The last chapter is brilliant.

I would recommend mindfulness in plain English anyone starting out in meditation it answers all the typical questions that the beginner might have, you can use this book without a teacher to get started on meditation. When you have passed that initial stage you can read Beyond Mindfulness in plain English of the same author. The next book to read is four foundations of mindfulness of the same author. Great books series from Bhante Gunaratana that can guide you to enlightenment.

This book is a how to manual for Buddhist mindfulness mediation without the religious trappings. I've read tens of other books and many of translations of the Sutras but have found nothing that comes close to this book as a guide to daily practice.

A most excellent book. Easy to read and understand. One can read the book from cover-to-cover or just in one section at a time from anywhere in the book. I recommend it for people who are beginning to learn about Buddism as well as those who have been practicing for years!

This is my first book on mindfulness. After being only about 100 pages into it, I can say its clear, readable and practical. I don't believe in past lives or that the self is a illusion or a delusion like the book says. And I was put off by the recurring statement that mindfulness meditation enables one to see reality as it is. But while I have doubts about mindfulness meditation leading to seeing the ultimate reality of life or the universe, getting passed barriers of repression, and the storms of insecurity, anxiety, lust, greed, etc and seeing clearer one's own psychological truth seems quite possible, at least that's what I'm hoping for. So there you go, a few comments from an absolute beginner at mindfulness mediation who needs calmness and clarity and hopes there's some of that here.

Few voice Buddhism with such clarity fir the Westerner than Bhante Gunaratana. He skillfully begins by explaining what mindfulness meditation is, how to progress and why we practice. He completes this work with a taste of Buddha's teachings which motivate one to move forward with the next excellent book by Bhante Gunaratana, Beyond Mindfulness in Plain English.

I had a great time reading and learning about vipassana meditation because of this book. The author's words flow quite well to ultimately reach the main goal: exciting your interest in mindfulness meditation, a practice that everyone should try.
