A Humorous Travel Memoir (American in Paris Book 1)
A Humorous Travel Memoir (American in Paris Book 1)

Review:Twentysomething American Female reminisces about her hard-drinking first months living as an expat in Paris. Not really amusing or interesting. At least the French words are spelled correctly. Probably OK if you like that kind of thing. Three Armies and Three Battles - The History of Four Days
Three Armies and Three Battles - The History of Four Days

Review:I had been reading the Sharpe series and wanted to read the true story before I continued with the fiction. Of course you could still tell that it was Cornwell doing the writing. This book, "Waterloo", showed how opportunities were missed on both sides, and how important leadership is in battle. Napoleon and Wellington had completely different styles. Wellington right up front, and Napoleon from the rear. Communications played a critical role in the outcome, as did trust in your allies. An... Read more

The Compelling True Story of a Brave - Embattled People
The Compelling True Story of a Brave - Embattled People

Review:The book, written in 1957, is based on an important number of discussions with refugees who were fleeing Hungary, after the anti-communist revolution against communism was crushed by the Soviet tanks. The presentation of the events of the revolution is vivid and realistic, as long as it does is limited to facts and does not attempt to explain what happened in Hungary in 1956. Because besides the presentation of the events, the book about the Bridge at Andau sadly demonstrates the inability of a ... Read more

What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding: A Memoir
What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding: A Memoir

Review:Here is a book written with both the skill and insight of a high school freshman. While attempting to impress the reader with how cool she can be, the author succeeds in demonstrating that she should stick to writing for television. You might find the book useful if you have a table with one short leg that needs support. Read more

Under the Tuscan Sun: At Home in Italy
Under the Tuscan Sun: At Home in Italy

Review:Under the Tuscan Sun is a wonderful and humorous look at what happens when an American couple decides to purchase and convert an ancient pile of stone rooms into a home in the Italian countryside. The book reveals how cultural differences and the elements can conspire to slow the progress of even the most diligent expatriate. Mayes shows us with love and humor what it took for her to finish her project, while she falls deeply in-love with her new land.
The book is a joy to read. I heartily... Read more

Neither Here nor There: Travels in Europe
Neither Here nor There: Travels in Europe

Review:He's Bill Bryson: it's going to be hilarious. I think the people who are taking offense to the book have forgotten that the voice he writes with is genuine and very much his own. Sure, the cities he visits and their inhabitants are portrayed as caricatures, but I'm just grateful he does not hesitate to make fun of himself either. If you're looking for a more comprehensive, lyrical version of Lonely Planet, look elsewhere. Read more

The Borgias: The Hidden History
The Borgias: The Hidden History

Review:Holds up, and is equal to, First Season - Series 1. It does almost always hold my interest. Four stars because some of the actors are a bit over the top. The production is indeed lavish and mostly adheres to the actual history of the period, both pictorial and personal, Read more

An Italian Journey ~ A Harvest of Revelations in the Olive Groves of Tuscany ~ A Pretty Girl
An Italian Journey ~ A Harvest of Revelations in the Olive Groves of Tuscany ~ A Pretty Girl

Review:If you are a cyclist, then you might enjoy this book more than I did. The author's focus was mainly on how he traversed the Tuscan Hills. I also did not care for the way he subtlety interjected his political viewpoints ( Republican), on farming subsidies. Overall, I would not recommend this book. Not about the Italy I know and love. and the King's Mother - The Women of the Cousins' War
and the King's Mother - The Women of the Cousins' War

Review:After reading all of Philippa Gregory's books about the cousin's war, at first I was disappointed that this book didn't read like her novels. Instead it
was more like reading a history book. As one who is interested in this subject I found this book informative as well as entertaining. The bibliography shows the intensive research which she as well as the other authors engaged in writing this book. Read more

The Battle of the Bulge and the Epic Story of WWII's Most Decorated Platoon
The Battle of the Bulge and the Epic Story of WWII's Most Decorated Platoon

Review:The Longest Winter tells the story of the Intelligence and Reconnaissance (I&R) Platoon, 394th Infantry Regiment, 99th Infantry Division. During the battle of the Bulge they held off the German offensive for a crucial (roughly) 24 hours. The story covers the US-based training, deployment, battle lead-up, battle, POW internment, liberation, and reunion. There is some personality interplay, as well. Has pictures and maps.

The history covered is a fascinating story, but this is only a me... Read more
