The Winds of War
The Winds of War

Review:I read this book back when it was first published, and also enjoyed the tv mini-series. The 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor inspired me to revisit it. It is a wonderful way to understand history of early WWII, in fact, I am going to go ahead and re-read the sequel, War and Remembrance. It seems most dated in its attitude toward Japan and Asia, using terms like "Oriental" and the kind of racist terms that come out in times of war. Read more

a Foundling (Penguin Classics) - The History of Tom Jones
a Foundling (Penguin Classics) - The History of Tom Jones

Review:Absolutely gorgeous book. I'm so pleased to have this and read it. It's a classic that is as classic as they come. The previous owner took excellent care of it. It feels like an original first addition, and I am one that has an appreciation for those sorts of things (history). I love it. Read more

Newly Emerging Diseases in a World Out of Balance
Newly Emerging Diseases in a World Out of Balance

Review:A classic of epidemiology, cataloging the various parasites, bacteria, and viruses that have been unleashed upon humanity by humanity's own invasion of the biosphere. The book is more than two decades old, but aptly tells the story of humanity's fight against infectious agents, the premature and hubristic belief that we had conquered the microbe (coinciding with the conquering of smallpox and the sword of antibiotics) up until around 1995. I'd love to see an update discussing the more recent h... Read more

Oedipus the King (Greek Tragedy in New Translations)
Oedipus the King (Greek Tragedy in New Translations)

Review:This is certain to become the new standard translation of Sophocles' Theban Plays. Slavitt brings with him decades of writing and translation experience to make an excellent new version of these classics. He uses mostly blank verse, which has the stately quality one expects from the Oedipus plays. Slavitt has struck a difficult balance between remaining faithful to the original and translating it for a contemporary audience. Read more

Antigone; Oedipus the King; Oedipus at Colonus - The Three Theban Plays

Review:These are my favorite of all the Greek tragedies and my favorite plays by Sophocles. This translation is excellent. It captures the poetry and elevated language that ought to go with tragedy. I would definitely recommend reading this one. Read more

Donna Kauffman(Blue Hollow Falls)
Donna Kauffman(Blue Hollow Falls)

Review:Sunny had never really had a family, other than her mother, who was a hippie and had been ill all of Sunny's life. Sunny had spent her entire life taking care of her mother's needs. Not it was time for her live her life on her terms. She had a great job in Alexandria, Virginia and she had a home. . . what more could she ask for? She received a summons to attend the reading of her father's will in Blue Hollow Falls, Virginia. She had never met her father and didn't know anything about him bu... Read more

Bridget Jones's Diary: A Novel
Bridget Jones's Diary: A Novel

Review:A very funny and (sorry, Mom) accurate portrait of the life of the modern singleton. Bridget made me giggle, cringe, and grieve for her, often in the same day. Now if only I can get my *own* life to have such a happy ending... Read more

The Blue Castle
The Blue Castle

Review:Most of lm Montgomerys books are very similar in the story line. This one was very different and entertaining. I find it a great read, very enjoyable. A little more on the scandalous side for the time it was written, making it even more interesting. Read more
