Review:I keep thinking I was born at the wrong time. I missed the expatriat scene of Fitzgerald and Hemingway, the Beats, and Kesey and his counterculture scene. Wolfe's book may not be as good as being there, but it does help those of us born far too late to understand and enjoy the scene. Wolfe writes sympathetically and pretty much from the point of view of the Pranksters, as if he had been there for all of it (he wasn't). Wolfe is a fine journalist, and he does a great job here. I think this is a v... Read more
Review:I found “My Life in Middlemarch“ to be an unusual blend of memoir and literature. Eliot’s “Middlemarch” is fondly remembered by Mead with a focus on how it impacted her at different times in her life as she reread it over the years. When she was a young girl aspiring to an elite English education coming from a working class background it represented hope for the future, a different way of being, and unknown adult world. As an unmarried woman searching for love it provided various ways of finding... Read more

Review:The Dressmaker of Khair Khana:
an excellent example of true journalism ; gayle lemmon's account inserts the reader inside of the facts, providing an understanding of events by those who lived through them along with compelling insight into how their 'history' impacted their future. read it Read more
Review:Somehow a review I wrote of an excellent product was posted for this.
This item was not what it was supposed to be, it was a poorly arranged and abridged version of the original book.
I am going to try to return it. Read more
Review:Although this book may have been the cat's meow in its day,
today it is one huge bored yawn. The characters were cardboard and
not a bit relatable. You do not identify with anything about
these privileged ladies , and you do not even care what happens to them.
So sorry I wasted both my money and my time. Read more

Review:This book was suggested by Shane Parrish at Farnam Street and I'm thankful I had the opportunity to read. The book was on the money and the insights were invaluable. This was my first encounter with DFW and his writing (or speeches) and I'm curious to explore his writing. This is water will be a regular read for me and a reminder of the choices we made every day in our lives. Read more
Review:I think MJ-12 is real. I found the ideas presented in this book very logical. Majestic ordered JFK's assassination. What's more, we have the order, on original paper, burned from a fire. Dr. Michael Salla writes a very convincing history of events. He is able to cite sources and provides over 300 sources. I think the Marilyn Monroe chapter was one of the best. The great part about this book is it makes you think. Read more
Review:Burkeman takes the reader easily and satisfyingly through his thoughts about how to live a good life, and indeed about whether or not we have a 'self'. He is up front about his reactions to his ideas, and self deprecating about his very human inability to live with his conclusions. This is an enjoyable and believable account, and as a result of reading the book I subscribe to his blog. Read more
