Civilization and Its Discontents
Civilization and Its Discontents

Review:As a behavioral psychologist, I found this book interesting from an historical perspective. Although there is little hard research in what was discussed, the fact that the problems of love and aggression still plague us is undeniable. For this historical discussion, this book is most valuable. Read more

The Age of Innocence
The Age of Innocence

Review:While radical for its time, this novel now seems somewhat superficial and dated. The main characters are more two-rather than three-dimensional. The international theme, the conflict between American and European values, is not well developed. Compared to a Henry James novel, such as The Ambassadors,

that deals with the international theme, The Age of Innocence, functions on a lesser level. Read more

Inside the Third Reich
Inside the Third Reich

Review:Well written. Quite censured, constrained like the author. Did not convince me of the truth, only the truth!!!! So like Speer, this book reveals only what the author wants to say.... self-promoting. I can see how some of his co-workers and Hitler's gang taught he was more a traitor than anything else...Never had a sense that Speer became "a better man" while in jail...because one has to connect with hits feelings and Speer does not seem to have the insight and ability to do so. Some cunning,misl... Read more

The Decline and Fall of the Japanese Empire - 1936-1945 (Modern Library War)
The Decline and Fall of the Japanese Empire - 1936-1945 (Modern Library War)

Review:John Toland's Rising Sun gives a unique documentation of the events leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbor from the Japanese perspective as well as the conduct of the war in the Pacific with the opposing viewpoints of the politicians and military. The opportunities to avoid war that were wasted through misinterpretation and miscommunication which could have dramatically altered history are painfully recorded. Needless loss of life of men and women (and children), both military and civilian, ... Read more

The Norton Anthology of American Literature (Ninth Edition) (Vol. Package 1

Review:The selection is great. I love the introductions before each time period- it really helps understand the history and culture of the time. Each author has a bio, which is nice. It's nicely laid out, easy to read, and very compact. Since I love literature, this series is a great value and something I enjoy reading outside of class. Read more

Making a Good Script Great, 3rd Ed.

Review:I found this book extremely helpful with my writing, as well as Linda Seger's other books. Her suggestions and ideas hit home again and again and my writing improved because of it. Since reading Linda Seger's books, I have had several scripts optioned, for both movies and television. Read more

101 Famous Poems
101 Famous Poems

Review:I, like so many other reviewers, grew up with this book. My father and I used to read these timeless poems together, and he knew a lot of them by memory and would recite them with great drama. I have the book that my father gave my mother shortly after they were married in the 40s. I just wish it were in a Kindle edition so that I could download it to my Kindle Fire. What a juxtaposition of eras that would be, eh? Read more

Around the World in Eighty Days (Oxford World's Classics)
Around the World in Eighty Days (Oxford World's Classics)

Review:A classic from my childhood first experienced through the Disney movie. This was quite a bit different yet all the better for it. I recommend to both the science fiction fan and the lover of history. Written about 1873 it's amazing how much things haven't changed in travel and in people. Read more
