Refactoring: Improving the Design of Existing Code
Refactoring: Improving the Design of Existing Code

Review:Refactoring definitely embodies the phrase "don't judge a book by its cover". Unfortunately I did this and missed out on a great book for too long. Franky, this thing looks like a text book... not something that would be an easy, enjoyable ready. However, this is exactly what it is.
Fowler's conversational style keeps the book moving and very enjoyable. He opens with a refactoring walkthrough that introduces you to the general concepts. After this the book catalogs all of the refactoring... Read more

From Journeyman to Master - The Pragmatic Programmer
From Journeyman to Master - The Pragmatic Programmer

Review:I enjoyed reading "The pragmatic programmer". It transcends process and discusses the fundamental aspects of software development. The book provides time and "buzz-word" invariant common-sense observations and tips about the practice. They are presented in a clear and straightforward manner, complete with many examples of actual code and actual tools. And herein lies my criticism. The code and tools are out of date. At this level of detail, they should be brought up to date. Read more

Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable - Purple Cow
Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable - Purple Cow

Review:Sure we (the marketing crowd) all know this already. We know world is getting so fast you have to find a way to be remarkable. We know if we dont find that way we will get lost in the masses and become invisible. But sometimes we forget it in our daily business. I dont necessarily agree with the whole ideavirus idea. But I do believe in being remarkable. I also believe being remarkable is all about creating a relevant remerkable temporary monopoly, and competing on the level where noone else has... Read more

Shiver
Shiver

Review:Michael Prescott always delivers, but Shiver has to be one of his best.
Just when you think the heroine has managed to escape by the skin
of her teeth AGAIN, the bad guy pops up out of nowhere, and he is
uber-creepy! Read more

An Informal Guide to Writing Nonfiction - On Writing Well
An Informal Guide to Writing Nonfiction - On Writing Well

Review:Probably the best writing teacher I have some across. William Zinsser's wisdom is simple, straight forward and he has been my guiding light for years. I have read his books and wanted to own the tape to listen to on my walkman while I walked the dogs. The tape is in practically new condition and I am so happy to have it to hear his voice. I am only sorry I never met him and was deeply saddened to learn of his death recently. Read more

The Plan to Settle the Red Planet and Why We Must
The Plan to Settle the Red Planet and Why We Must

Review:This book is very good; everything is laid out in a good, logical fashion & everything is thoroughly explained. The book is completely convincing that a cheap, efficient Mars program is entirely possible right now.
It is because of this that reading the book is very frustrating. Why frustrating? Because while reading the book, one realizes that the only thing keeping humanity from colonizing Mars is ignorance, political wrangling, and public apathy.
Incidentally, the book that got me... Read more

Letters to a Young Poet
Letters to a Young Poet

Review:I am no intellectual, and stumbled upon this book through a ladies' magazine article asking celebs what they were reading. Elizabeth Shue, whose talent I really enjoy, mentioned Letters to a Young Poet. The book is for the open-minded and the big- hearted, teachable few that possess the intellectual chops to parse and absorb the beauty of Rilke's words and insight. It is both a comfort and an inspiration. I LOVE this book. Buy it, and share some time with it, and yourself. Read more

Lessons from the Life of Muhammad - In the Footsteps of the Prophet
Lessons from the Life of Muhammad - In the Footsteps of the Prophet

Review:Having studied Islam at university, I bought a number of books about Islam and Islamic thought and culture, and this is one of the books I bought. Some of the books have been negative in nature, often by Muslim and Arab writers, but this book by Mr Ramadan is a positive book about Muhammad and what he means to Islam, and perhaps to the wider world.

It isn't so much the history of Muhammad but more the understanding of Muhammad's life and teachings and the theology and meanings that come f... Read more

Why the Civil War Still Matters - The War That Forged a Nation
Why the Civil War Still Matters - The War That Forged a Nation

Review:Interesting and easy to read history of the civil war era. Particularly interesting was the rise and fall of reconstruction. Then, like now, we the people, tired of war and conflict and as victors simply gave into the vanquished south. Winning the war and losing the peace. Sound familiar at all? Read more

Separated Powers and Federalism, Eleventh Edition
Separated Powers and Federalism, Eleventh Edition

Review:Assigned as text for "Cinema as Art" class. The book is comprehensive. Photo captions are good. Prose is dreadful.
Sole virtue is its popularity among cinematography instructors. Grossly overpriced. Do not buy. Instead, rent
DVDs and study appended commentaries. Read more
