Michael Prescott always delivers, but Shiver has to be one of his best.
Just when you think the heroine has managed to escape by the skin
of her teeth AGAIN, the bad guy pops up out of nowhere, and he is
uber-creepy!

Great read, couldnt put the book down. Amazing story of someone so timid come to life and have strength they never knew they had, especially in these scary situations that I couldnt imagine anyone being in. Thrilling read.

Basically the idea is good but there are long pages that give the impression aof having been written to fill a void, mora than to fill a book. Also I think M. Prescoot do push the cork a bit to far to be realistic.HAVING TAKEN TIME TO FINISH THE BOOK, i MUST SAY MY FIRST COMMENT BWHERE A BIT HASTY

I guess I'm getting tired of reading gory accounts of serial killers who mangle their victims in one way or another. Shiver plumbs the depths in this area.

Adding insult to injury, the female heroine has a completely incredible way of beating the odds. The author swiftly transforms her from a meek copy writer into a female commando. Good thing, too, or she'd be a dead heroine.

I appreciated the brisk pace of this thriller. However, there were just too many things happening in this book that ignored all the laws of physics and physiology, so that by the end I was more annoyed than entertained. I don't want to ruin the book for other people, so let's just say that Mr. Prescott has absolutely no idea how much blood a head or neck wound produces. For a murderer to walk around afterward as if he weren't totally saturated and dripping with blood, being merely "blood-spattered" instead as written, is absolutely ridiculous. Also, a knife is described as being covered in "blood and pus" after an attack, which is absolutely bizarre considering pus only comes from infection, which would not be present in a freshly inflicted wound. This author is inexcuseably careless with his writing.

I was willing to overlook that up to a point, but then things happened that are important plot points that absolutely could not occur in "real life", like people surviving auto accidents without any injuries (as well as clothing that should be blood-saturated being quickly cleaned up well enough to be seen during broad daylight) and I just became really disgusted with this book.

In addition, the killer is described as having very thick glasses, presumably meaning that he has poor vision, but at one point he's driving around without his glasses on. Come on now!!! My husband won't even walk down a flight of stairs without his glasses, much less drive without them!!! Mistakes like that are just insulting to the readers. This was just an average story, and these mistakes dropped the writing to below-average. I won't be reading anything else by this author.

One can usually count on this author to produce a fast paced mystery with compelling characters. This book is okay but not his best.A serial killer dubbed the gryphon is terrorizing women in LA. After taping the women's pathetic pleas for life, he murders them, taking their heads but leaving behind a crude, handmade statue of the mythological creature. He sets his sights on the retiring and non-assertive Wendy who proves to be far more resourceful than anyone had anticipated. As Wendy out maneuvers a determined killer, she fights her growing attraction to the lead detective Sebastian. As Sebastian pursues the killer, he also puruses Wendy.

This is not a terrible story. It started slowly and really dragged through the serial killer tutorial. Wendy was a bit too mousy to be believed but her transformation was fun. Sebastian didn't have a whole lot to do but the serial killer was the biggest dispapointment of all. Yes he was bad and sadistic but not very interesting, compelling or charismatic. His final scenes were fast paced but hard to swallow. While there is entertainment value in this book, it does not rise to the level of his other offerings.

I bought this book several months ago but had not started reading it until this week. It was the fastest I have read a book in years. I could not wait to get back to the story each night and when I was able to walk on the treadmill. The final hour this morning as I read made me forget I was walking on the treadmill. I. Now want to see the movie if I can find it. I like knowing that we have come a long way in 21 years since this story was written. If DNA had been available a lot of people would have been spared! Great read.

A few years back this author was Brian Harper. Shiver and his other book Shudder were fast paced scary and unputdownable. I lent this book to my daughter and she too became a fan. It has been hard to find other books to reach the heights this one did. If you are looking for heart pounding reading and don't mind the brutal and the gore, this one is for you!
