Lessons from the Life of Muhammad - In the Footsteps of the Prophet
Lessons from the Life of Muhammad - In the Footsteps of the Prophet

Review:Having studied Islam at university, I bought a number of books about Islam and Islamic thought and culture, and this is one of the books I bought. Some of the books have been negative in nature, often by Muslim and Arab writers, but this book by Mr Ramadan is a positive book about Muhammad and what he means to Islam, and perhaps to the wider world.

It isn't so much the history of Muhammad but more the understanding of Muhammad's life and teachings and the theology and meanings that come f... Read more

Why the Civil War Still Matters - The War That Forged a Nation
Why the Civil War Still Matters - The War That Forged a Nation

Review:Interesting and easy to read history of the civil war era. Particularly interesting was the rise and fall of reconstruction. Then, like now, we the people, tired of war and conflict and as victors simply gave into the vanquished south. Winning the war and losing the peace. Sound familiar at all? Read more

and the Gap Between Us and Them - Moral Tribes
and the Gap Between Us and Them - Moral Tribes

Review:Joshua Greene has a very interesting academic background - he is both a research psychologist and a philosopher. He uses his expertise in both areas to explain why ethical issues are fundamentally impossible to resolve if we rely only on our moral intuitions.

Greene's Moral Tribes: Emotion, Reason, and the Gap Between Us and Them takes the fascinating ideas from Daniel Kahneman's Read more

Book 2 in the Grey Wolves Series (Volume 2) - Blood Rites
Book 2 in the Grey Wolves Series (Volume 2) - Blood Rites

Review:This book should be removed, while leaving the book with the new cover the only ebook option to purchase. The old cover is the odd man out in my whole collection of this series.

I have to say, the editing in these ebooks is atrocious! It gets worse as the series goes on, but the storyline and characters help put my intolerance of bad editing on hold.

Storyline is fabulous!!!! Love love love it!! Read more

A New History of the Second World War - The Storm of War
A New History of the Second World War - The Storm of War

Review:Outstanding on all counts. A finely detailed summary of all the decisions as to why Hitler lost the war. Plus the Japanese fiascos that gave us the upper hand early in the war. The atomic bomb was necessary but we would have won regardless. And I was just about to get drafted into the Pacific battles. Read more

Remo Went Rogue (Remo Cobb)
Remo Went Rogue (Remo Cobb)

Review:There is no doubt about it, Mike McCrary can write a fun book. This book was packed with action, violence, and tons of sarcastic humor. There were a ton of one-liners that made me laugh out loud. There was also a lot of fast paced action that kept me on my toes. This is everything I look for in a book.

You have the whiny lawyer, Remo, that put away the Mashburn brothers. Not only did he botch the case and get them sent to prison, he stole their money. Well, they get out and come looking f... Read more

The Donner Party's Perilous Journey West - Desperate Passage
The Donner Party's Perilous Journey West - Desperate Passage

Review:I really enjoyed the pace and factuality of the book the author went to great lengths to bring us the story of the Donner party. Be ready for a very gruesome and descriptive account of the amazing will to survive. Read more

A Passage to India
A Passage to India

Review:I read this with a book club not knowing anything about it. I found its images rich and enjoyed the relationship of Aziz and Fielding as a metaphor for the situation between India and England at that time. Makes me wonder if a the west can ever truly know the east even now. Read more

Absalom, Absalom! (Critical Insights)
Absalom, Absalom! (Critical Insights)

Review:I know William Faulkner is one of our most celebrated writers, so disliking this book goes against the worshipful crowd. However, I found Absalom, Absalom to be so dense, byzantine and chock full of non-stop ENDLESS run-on sentences (otherwise called stream-of-consciousness) to be nearly impenetrable. If I wanted this much work, I'd sign up for a road crew.

I have a fairly fluent acquaintance with the English language, but I had to read a synopsis to understand the story. I know it ma... Read more
