Review:The book is a towering work and this audio version makes it easier to digest. The narrators style is appropriate but perhaps a little too fast as the text demands your attention - which is why I have only given it four stars, .The book itself deserves SIX stars. If you get distracted for a few moments, you can often find you have missed a key moment in the story. I have tried to slow it down on my iPhone, but the slowed version sounds like the narrator has suffered a partial stroke, and the voic... Read more
Review:I can all but warn from reading this book because once you'll read it, you'll be hooked on history books for the rest of your life. I originally read other genre books, when my attention fell on a book by Adrian Goldsworthy, "How Rome Fell: Death of a Superpower". As the decline and fall of the Roman Empire is a subject of interest for many people, I was intrigued by the title as well and spontaneously decided to read it. It was a nice, easily understandable book that delineated chronologically ... Read more
Review:Working through a manuscript with this book was both eye opening and a bit painful. So much, so wrong (with my writing not the book's). Oh my. I'm not complaining, mind you. My work has benefited. The book is both helpful and constructive, perhaps the single best volume on content editing I've come across, and I read many. The tone is just right with no accusations but also no coddling.
Others have gone over the content of Self Editing for Fiction Writers in detail. All I have to say is d... Read more
Review:Five stars according to Amazon says "I love it." No.
This is a classic and not one bit of I love it. There is a reason people are reading it now and talking about it. Those facts are not because they love it. But because fiction is often more truthful in exposing reality than non-fiction.
One of the few Must Reads from the latter part of the 20th century which is still a Must Read. Read more
Review:A lot of veiled homoerotic imagery, much of which today would be considered borderline pedophilia. Bogged down by repetitive illusions to the Greek ideals of beauty. Not on narrative par with Buddenbrooks or The Magic Mountain. Best suited for those who wish to say they've read all of Thomas Mann's work. Read more
Review:The Man with Two Left Feet and Other Stories PGW is a great writer. The collection of his stories under the title "The man with two left feet" cover different subjects and only one features Bertie, an advantage rather than a drawback. Most of the stories end with unpredictable punchline. As always PGW's English is flawless. Read more
Review:Jesus, I'm sorry! I'm here complaining about people hurting my feeling when I reach out to them and my brothers and sisters in Christ are dying and being tortured for Your name LORD, again I'M SO SORRY, PLEASE FORGIVE ME! Read more
Review:If you love Russian Literature or have a passion for Dostoevsky, then this is a must. If not, not so much. The story is narrated and uneven. Characterization is excellent, but characters whom you thought might be central to the story, often become side-lined. Some of the scenes are ponderous and at first you might want to give up, but the personalities and story tighten and grow on you. Some scenes are riveting. Particularly interesting is Dostoevsky's use if his own experience of being condemne... Read more
Review:This was the first book I purchased from Amazon for school, and it came in great condition. I was thinking that purchasing a used book would be a result of a stinky, beat up horror, but I was surely wrong! Read more
