Review:Tough book to grasp, short. Reading along with Leland Ryken though made it an excellent opportunity to enjoy this classic. Ryken, has since taken his online interactive "read thru the classics" into several books to help us grow up into enjoying great literature. Read more
Review:This is a very insightful review of how the minds of the politicians, monarchs, and military people functioned when most of Europe was composed of five colonial empires, Russia, Austria-Hungaria, Germany, Great Britain and France. The Great War was all but inevitable, and all five powers contributed to its inception, with the leading role of Russia and France as the instigators, not Germany as we were told. Read more
Review:Most interesting story; actual history; detailed life of the Arabs at war, the manner of their living in the desert & in the oases & a look at how the British officers looked at the war scene & played a part in it. A look into how war was fought 100 years ago. The inclusion of the maps of the various regions where the battles were being fought is very interesting & most important. The story or review is told in a beautiful, easy to read prose & is really, a delight to read. Read more
Review:This is an extensive account of military action with minimal political analysis as to causes and legacy. It covers action on land sea and air, with accounts of weaponry development in all three arenas. It's well organized to follow a chronological account, switching between the many fronts, although Hart leaves no doubt that the decisive area was the Western Front.. There are a few nuggets of new (to me) information, like King Constantine being married to the Kaiser's sister Sophia. Another is t... Read more
Review:After seeing a program on PBS about Salinger, I decided to revisit some of work. I had never read For Esme etc and now wish I was in a book club or literature class to really dig into the stories in this book. Salinger's writing is the kind of work that stays with you and you continue to think about it and want to re-read it. I don't think of Salinger as an "exceptional" author, like Hemingway or Faulkner, but it is certainly very deep. Read more
Review:I've enjoyed Major Channing since he first had the nerve to insult Alexia. I kept waiting for the right woman to stand up to him and, lo and behold, Faith is just such a woman! I loved reading their story and hope to hear more about Teddy, too! She's a pip! Read more
Review:This ENTIRE series has been an absolute blast to read. I got so caught up in all of the characters and was dying to find out how it ended. It was a very easy read and I just couldn't put the book down! Read more

Review:This Modern Library edition is gorgeously printed and well-annotated with invaluable critical notes that will make the work vastly more accessible to the average person while providing useful background to others. I would have preferred it to have included Paradise Regained, however, as I think it's an important companion to the work. Those with more of an interest in literary criticism or who wish to more vigorously digest and dissect the poem would be advised to steer themselves towards the No... Read more
