Review:In “Tender Is the Night,” Fitzgerald provides us with a harsh look at human nature and relationships through the lives of three unforgettable characters. The story is told from these three different characters, the Divers, Dick and Nicole and Rosemary. The story shifts between the three persons to slowly reveal the surreal relationship between Dick and Nicole and their sad lives. “Tender Is the Night” is less dramatic and much slower than “The Great Gatsby,” but eventually much more satisfying. ...
Read more
Review:I have an old version of the complete Burton, and its pages are starting to yellow with age, because it was printed in the 30s on cheap acid-process paper. This version is beautifully done, and a welcome replacement, but it doesn't constitute the entire work. It's just a selection, but a good one. If you want the complete work, you'll have to keep searching. Read more
Review:My 6 year old granddaughter loves this book. The illustrations are outstanding. Heidi's universal theme of caring for and being genuinely interested in helping people is a message that I feel can never be overstated. This edition of Heidi does a very good job of condensing the story into a readable, understandable and enjoyable read. Read more

Review:Augie March had an interesting life in his teens and twenties. We follow him through the Great Depression and WW2. The Depression is summed up in a rich, cagy cripple named Einhorn. The war is largely spent in a lifeboat with a maniac.
Augie's greatest adventures are romantic. The leading ladies are assertive Thea Fenchel and beautiful Stella. Thea chases Augie down, despite the fact that it is her sister who Augie has a crush on. But Augie is led by the nose, and doesn't have a cha... Read more
Review:Lord Jim is an early harbinger of the modern novel. With perspectives and chronologies that take a while to settle, it is not an easy read. But do persist. The reward is well worth it: not only for the rich characters but the human insight that is quintessentially Conrad. Enjoy! Read more
Review:I read this terrific early mystery many years ago, and I wanted a new copy (with larger print) to replace my yellowed old mass market copy. According to the dimensions in the description, this edition appeared to be a nice trade paperback. However, it is one of those print-on-demand books. It appears that a small-print edition was scanned and printed onto larger pages, because there are very wide white margins surrounding the text. I had not looked inside until I started to read the book, so it ... Read more
Review:What a strange fascinating narrator! While Jane Eyre will always be my favorite of Charlotte's novels, Villette holds its own. I admit the narration will not be for everyone. Often the side characters take on brighter more perceivable places in this story than it's hero, yet it is still compelling. I highly recommend this novel, and it's intriguing and and illusive narrator. Read more
Review:The book itself is fascinating but the Amazon printing is awful, full of typos. In one paragraph I found five! Some typos change the meaning of a sentence or are confusing. There is a much more recent translation of Proust, better than Moncrief's making Proust more accessible but this isn't used by Amazon. For future books in the sequence I'm going elsewhere. Read more
