Orlando (Vintage Classics)
Orlando (Vintage Classics)

Review:No lover in the world ever wrote a valentine more exquisite than Virginia Woolf's tribute to her lover Vita Sackville-West.

That tribute was "Orlando: A Biography," a magical-realism tale about a perpetually youthful, charming hero/ine who traverses three centuries and both genders -- and Woolf's writing reaches a new peak as she explores the hauntingly sensuous world of Orlando. It's one of those rare novels that transcends the time in which it was written, even as its hero/ine transcend... Read more

(A Modern Library E-Book) (Modern Library 100 Best Novels)
(A Modern Library E-Book) (Modern Library 100 Best Novels)

Review:Everyone knows this book and most love it. When I read it 40 years ago I was too young to appreciate it. Now I appreciate it, but I also recognize some flaws in the writing and especially in the character development. Yes it's bold to criticize Somerset Maugham, but he's dead and I don't think he'll complain. Let's face it, he's a great writer, but even he had some flaws. The poor character, Phillip, wanders from life stage to life stage without learning anything from his mistakes. He's conti... Read more

The Quiet American
The Quiet American

Review:The relationship between Pyle and Fowler regarding Phuong seems improbable; however, for a student of Vietnamese culture, the story paints a subtle but insightful view into a time long past. I would have loved to have seen Vietnam before the heavy American involvement, and The Quiet American gives a glimpse of an era that is gone forever. Read more

The Billionaire's Unexpected Wife - A Vegas Bad Boy Story
The Billionaire's Unexpected Wife - A Vegas Bad Boy Story

Review:Kristo and Amaya's story starts off at warp speed. After a wild night in Vegas, they find themselves married. Kristo wants to make the most of this as a business deal to appease his family. Amaya agrees to cover student loans and to help her disabled sister. Romance, steaminess, and laughter ensue. I couldn't put this book down. I was so invested in their story and what would happen with them. I highly recommend The Billionaire's Unexpected Wife. Read more

The Untethered
The Untethered

Review:Roble is a fascinating character, and you'll see why from the very beginning. The way his story unfolds is thrilling, and his narrative is told in a way that makes it so easy for the reader to relate to it. Southwick's ability to describe flight is also otherworldly, making this an absolutely must-read for anyone with even a mild interest in aviation. That said, I think there's truly something here for everyone. The character development is exquisite, and if you're a fan of thrillers, you won't ... Read more

A Room with a View (AmazonClassics Edition)
A Room with a View (AmazonClassics Edition)

Review:Forster's touching, funny and insightful novel toys with the conflict between passion and propriety in the British upper classes in the first years of the past century. Like a good Austin novel, we enjoy the journey despite the inevitable conclusion. In fact, it's not crazy to suggest that this is a book Austin may have written had she lived 100 years later.

The movie, starring Helena Bonham Carter, is faithful to the book and worth watching. But read the book as well. Read more

Lady Chatterley's Lover
Lady Chatterley's Lover

Review:I slogged through the first half of this book and finally gave up. It's just stultifyingly dull. I was reading it as one of those classics that everybody has read, and I remember liking Lawrence's The Rainbow in college, but life is too short for me to bother finishing this one. Read more

Madame Bovary (AmazonClassics Edition)
Madame Bovary (AmazonClassics Edition)

Review:Like french movies, this book was not about happy endings and a happy storyline. It was a sad, raw, human book. As much as I was disgusted by the actions of the some of the characters, I still enjoyed every minute of reading this book because the storyline is interesting and has a great flow. Read more
