An Irreverent Escapade (Penguin Modern Classics) - Auntie Mame
An Irreverent Escapade (Penguin Modern Classics) - Auntie Mame

Review:Good: many stories/adventures in one book, overfilled with sophisticated vocabulary and historical/cultural references

Bad: should be accompanied with a dictionary and internet connection for additional reference

The Rosalind Russell movie is my favorite classic, which is why I read the book. The book is also a wonderful classic that weaves together rich imagination and elegant writing (my vocabulary has grown immensely). Read more

Review:I looked forward to reading each time I thought of this book. The author's descriptions just captured me and I'm not really sure why. I think some of his characters experiences were similar to mine since part of this book takes place in Madison but it was more than that. Wonderful writing, I really loved it! Read more

Review:Translation: C.J. Hogarth, 143496 words

The first 10 chapters (half the book) have everything that makes a picaresque novel: funny characters, funny adventures and travels. It rolls along at a perfect pace. Gogol is witty and smooth, a suave motor mouth. I wouldn’t say that as a narrator he’s in the way, but he is crowding the reader.

Gogol’s deadpan narrative style is suitable for comedy. The main character, Chichikov describes an acquaintance, Sobakevitch, as “a bear, and not... Read more

Review:I'm reading this for a college assignment. Hate it. Hate it. I don't see why anyone likes it. I'm not Italian or Middle English. Give me a modern translation. If they can translate the Bible into readable English, surely they can translate this. Read more

Review:The story of Bigger is especially relevant as the nation again discusses issues of race after the trial of George Zimmerman for the death of Trayvon Martin. It is easy to see how racism and marginalization of young Black men leads to powerlessness and rage, and rage leads to actions that exacerbate racist fear, and that fear leads to more racism. Review:I wanted Alan Rickman's beautiful voice! Be careful ordering this. I ordered the Kindle book and upgraded to audio version since I don't want an Audible account. I wanted the Alan Rickman narration. What I got was an Kindle ebook and an audio version with a female narrator that would only play on my Android Kindle app at high speed. She was speaking about one and a half times normal speed. Could find no way to slow it down in the app. Read more

Review:I am only applying a three-star rating because it did not appear on my Kindle device as expected. When I purchase on my original Kindle, the content is also available on my Kindle Fire, not so the other way around. I purchased the collection while on my Kindle Fire and the content is not included on my original Kindle. I was very disappointed because I use the original Kindle for bedside reading. Is this a setting glitch on my end? Read more

Review:I'm at 35 percent, and seriously considering not investing any more time in it. Very boring. Although I've never seen it, the movie is supposed to be a classic. The author spends so much time trying to develop the thoughts and mood of the characters that I fall asleep waiting for the plot to develop. Read more

Review:Another great story by Duane. A read page turner. His character development builds throughout the book. Another enjoyable side is the way Duane crafts a great story without having to resort to profane and vulgar language.
Keep them coming sir. Read more

Review:The music in this item is awesome. It is calming especially when driving. As you listen you can reread the book in your mind. The book is better than the film though the film was also excellent. I am glad I bought this CD. Read more
