Review:I can offer to the author, this book and it's sequel, is that The Skull Throne has sat unread, in my kindle library, while immersed in Davis Ashura's world of Arisa. I was surprised and delighted by the scope of the story, it's characters, magical system, culture and the many plot twists! The story and characters would not let me put the book down. The viewpoints and insights shared by the various characters added to the depth of the story. This book comes highly recommended. It will surprise... Read more
Review:I have been reading Howard P. for years, but lost all the the books during various moves and housing disasters.
This collection has solved that problem, everything the man published (including some I have never seen before) in a single easily navigated electronic document. With audio versions as an added bonus.
I highly recommend this for the die hard HPL fan, it isn't the same as having that dusty old copy of The Strange Case of Charles Dexter Ward in your hands, but it is a damn... Read more
Review:Being a long-time Lovecraft fanatic, I am pleased to see that Penquin chose to publish a two volume collection of his works.
Lovecraft's writing is not for those who ingest King, Grisham, Patterson, Dan Brown or other formulaic storytellers. These stories are for those who don't shy away from a good gothic thriller, Dostoevsky, Bram Stoker, Poe or other writers who had lived in a different era from our own. If you need to read 'modern writing', Lovecraft is not for you.
Lovecraft's... Read more
Review:Loved the first book, loved the second book, and can't wait to read the finale. This book is a definite contrast to the first... diving deep into the torn emotions of loss, love, hate, and betrayal after betrayal for several of the characters. This story definitely answers a lot of questions from the first, and has a lot of unexpected twists and turns... a definite page turner. A much more sad and emotional read, but it does finally still leave you with hope.. hope, the end and central theme ... Read more
Review:“Twice-daughter, my joy. Your dream is my dream, and your name is true. You are all of our hope.”
I've been looking forward to this book for what seems like a very long time. And I'm very pleased to say it did not disappoint. It wasn't perfect (I'll get into that later), but it was damn close.
The book picks up right as the Angels (led by Jael) arrive on Earth, and we're immediately introduced to a new human character named Eliza who appears to have quite the mysterious past. It se... Read more
Review:This is a cute little story that stems from the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy. I recommend reading it if you're reading those books and have read Days of Blood and Starlight. It's a shorter story, but sweet and just as exciting as the trilogy. Read more
Review:Copied from my Goodreads review.
First the bad.
There were a crap ton of typos. Missing words, extra words, that kind of thing. For example, too many "the"s, or missing "to"s. It drove me crazy. Other than that, I loved this book.
Then the good.
Stark is what I wished Dresden would be. Of course I had to make some comparisons, because I have been reading the Dresden Files series for a while now. There are similarities but not as many as you would first think. I always... Read more
Review:Outstanding start to what looks to be a good series. Not much I can add to what most other reviews have said, except the following:
I like the low level of magic exhibited by Daniel, the main protagonist. Often, in urban fantasy storys, the magic becomes almost a Deus Ex Machina (Jim Butcher, I'm talking to you! Although I love the Dresden Files, the magic is getting out of hand!) Not so here. Although the world is definitely magical, with demons, succubi, dark rituals, etc... the pro... Read more
Review:Don't get me wrong. Everything I like about the character is here, but the storyline left me unimpressed. We left Stark at the end of the last novel with his whole life torn apart. It's a great way to explore new territory with a character everyone already loves. But in the last few chapters, Kadrey takes it all back and puts Stark's life back almost exactly where we found him at the beginning of the last book - home and girlfriend restored, pesky responsibilities shed, and so on. Review:This is just plain and true good writing, come down to LA and see if I'm wrong. Honest writing and true in your face action. A true testament to the fun and horrors of the City of Angeles. Hell is just LA with better head shots Read more
