Review:Four short standalone fantasies make up this collection from Neil Gaiman's Sandman series. "Calliope" finds a washed up writer taking his muse captive with dire results all around. "A Dream of a Thousand Cats" is a delightful fable about the nature of reality, and an assured favorite of cat lovers. "A Midsummer Night's Dream" is not so much a re-interpretation of Shakespeare's classic comedy as a command performance for a wholly unexpected audience. The final vignette seems inspired by a cla... Review:Another fantastic story by the great Neil Gaiman. If you're a fan of the series or his story telling then this will not disappoint. The art alone is justification enough to buy this work. Can't recommend it enough. Read more
Review:One of many things that separated Neil Gaiman's Sandman from other comic book characters is that the foreboding but likable king of dreams has existed since the beginning of time and is supposed to be an archetype common to all cultures. Gaiman was free to visit any time and place he wanted to. However, he set all of Sandman's long story arches in the present. Tales from ancient Rome or Elizabethan England were limited to single issue stories bordering bigger epics. Fables and Reflections, place... Read more
Review:This opening story arc is the origin story. It is weighed down by the things origin stories always struggle with. There are individual moments that truly shine, but there's too much happening to allow the story and characters to breathe. Sandman doesn't get to be much more than an enigmatic vengeful revenant. The arc builds him up as badass, and I love how his sister shows up at the end to take the piss out of him (like siblings do). Good but not blown away yet. Looking forward to reading more.<... Review:An absolutely excellent read. Gaiman presents characters that we all know and love in a unique and exciting way. Even though I am not thoroughly read in the marvel universe, what I do know about the characters shone through and had me wanting more. Read more
Review:This is simply a great book. Neil Gaiman is a genius, and I have no doubt that he is one of the names of our era that will go down in literary history. One of the reasons for this is that despite writing in a genre that has traditionally been considered masculine, Gaiman has a profound understanding of the female psyche, and that understanding is best shown off in this chapter of the Sandman series. Although I hesitate to recommend this collection as an introduction to Gaiman's work, I do think ... Read more
Review:This is one hefty coffee table book. I was able to get it for a very good price and astounded at how high quality the outer slipcase box is and how fun it is to look through the books and recognize artwork from games I enjoyed as a child. Very nice! Read more
Review:This is a wonderful book totally worth the price. I know that some of these comics can be found online but there are many that cannot be and in this book, there are explanations of some of the comics and it tells a wonderful story. Read more
Review:Great little book! I recently discovered Sarah's Scribbles and spent more hours than I care to admit reading through the majority of them online.
Her work is most appealing to a certain personality type and/or a majority of Millennials, so this might not be everyone's cup of tea.
I was mildly disappointed this collection didn't contain a handful of my favorite strips, but they were newer and likely posted after the book was already compiled. So here's hoping for book 2! Other than ... Read more
Review:I bought this book after reading some of the author's recent comics on facebook. I was disappointed as these comics were not as funny and engaging. I am very much looking forward to his next book with more recent material, but I would not purchase this again. Read more
